My taste in racing games has gone from one extreme to the other and back again over the years. The first racer I got excited about was Hang On, and I preferred arcade style racers up until Gran Turismo, at which point I became addicted to sims up until Burnout 3, which lured me back to the arcade side of things.
Right now the racer I'm playing is Wipeout Pure (insanely fast) though my most played racers this gen are the Motorstorm games (which mix Burnout with Road Rash and thus manage to be very fun despite horrendously bad 'tethering').
Modnation Racers, which is a kart style game in which one can build racers, vehicles and tracks could be the first kart racing game I've ever enjoyed (the track creator is clearly very flexible and if it acquiresa LBP type community I'm sure I'll find myself still playing it a year after release).
I'm not yet excited about GT5 (didn't much enjoy GT4, Forza 1 or 2 or Prologue) though I'm keeping an eye on it.
I find them very daunting nowadays with games in excess of 400 cars, hundreds of tracks and ridiculous amounts of tournaments to compete in its a good thing for most people but ive lost my interest in the genre. i couldnt be arsed with GT4 and by the looks of it GT5 (and the Forza Series) the gameplay is just played out imo, how many times do i want to do the same out-apex-out technique? i have been doing the same thing since the 1st gran turismo.
My only interests in racing games are games like Burnout, Wipeout etc. the games always remain fresh, rather than driving through Laguna Seca on different games all over again. For those still into sim racers and are enjoying Forza 2 i can respect that, because I was obsessed with racing sims long ago and enjoyed every moment of it as the experience was fresh. I might check out Shift it looks different from the rest in terms of the driving experience.
I only enjoy racing games if they contain some form of RPG element like building up a garage from scratch while starting with only crappy options. I like going back to events with beastly cars to lap the opponents that gave me a hard time earlier.
If a racing game just gives me everything from the start i dont really enjoy it at all.
And either way the controls better be absolutely spot on perfect or i WILL NOT play it.
I find driving simulators to be boring and arcade racers can be dull after a short while, there's only so much you can do with racing games when the only real options are time trials, general races and challenges. Until they start doing a racing game with a difference, like say flying cars akin to Back To The Future 2 and being able to switch back and forth, then the racing genre will end up becoming as stale as FPS.
I loved that Deloran mock up in Burnout Paradise, it made a small difference from the usual evne if you didn't truly fly, it was still difference from the usual.
I enjoy racing games, although having the same tracks and cars present in new iterations of a series over and over again gets very boring, yes.
There's one thing that keeps me from truly enjoying them though more than anything else: if you mess up just ONCE, you're basically screwed. This unforgiving aspect really makes me not want to continue playing. There's nothing more frustrating than completing three laps with someone right on your tail only to spin out on the last turn (sometimes by no fault of your own) and lose. Dirt 2's rewind system is a wonderful addition; I've hadn't had so much fun since the original Sega Rally on the Saturn, and hopefully it will be used more often in future racing games.
I don't mind playing driving games like Forza, but I lose motivation to continue when the races get so long that they take 20 minutes or more. I never end up 'finishing' them. I did play GT3 until I beat every race, but now I like something a little more lighthearted. Midnight Club series in my opinion is much better than NFS, and that's what I have been playing recently when in the mood for driving games.

No. Racing has a whole nother experience from FPS or action games. You can't save within a race. You have to make are of the turns count and not crash. It's about sense of speed and feel, and good racing opponents.
[QUOTE="FloydianBrad"]In Forza 2 the longest any race has taken for me is no more than 12-15 minutes, besides the endurance races of course which can be around an hour or so... Maybe it just drags on for me, I don't know. I don't mind the races in the beginning when I'm doing 2 or 3 laps, but eventually it goes to 6 or 8. Maybe it's not the time, but the repetition that gets to me.I don't mind playing driving games like Forza, but I lose motivation to continue when the races get so long that they take 20 minutes or more. If you have played BURNOUT PARADISE, you wouldn't say so...

too be honest i just got that game and tried it out i quiet like it
but if i find myself hooked to a driving game for a week or so i find
it makes me trend every racing game but you give me a bit too re cooperate
and i just get right back into them its quiet weird
Actually, I think I can safely say that racing games are the only kinds of games that don't get boring to me. Well yeah, I'll want to quit playing the same one over and over eventually, but there's so many! I can never pass up the chance to play a new racer. Plus, there are always tons more on the way. As far as uniqueness goes, wouldn't be a bad idea, though you really don't have to have it IMO. All racers are unique in that no race is ever the same.
Let me try to put this simply... Anybody who can get a thrill out of watching cars drive in a circle hundreds of times isn't too worried about racing games being stale.now i have not tried dirt 2 or nfs shift yet but from all games before

To a point yes they are getting repititive. With the same cars, the same tracks. But you get games like Forza and GT that lets you make mods to your car, all the way down to play with the gear setting to try to get the most out of your car so it's running at the highest peak makes it all worth while. But you really got to be into cars and racing or yes you will find it boring.
It really makes me mad that people give arcade stlye racers a higher score than the sim racers. 2 different types of racers you just can't compare. It's like comparing apples to oranges.

There's a difference between NASCAR style racing and the street racing that is much more common, now. Even most of the simulators don't just drive in circles...Please Log In to post.
