Agreedvideo games are a visual medium among others. so yes, graphics are important to me.

Yes they matter a bit. Not above gameplay though. They have to be decent. They have to be at least be up to the level or close to the time frame it was made. There can be a beautiful looking game that plays horrible just like there can be a below par looking game that plays great. So they are important, but not the thing I look for the most in my games.

Man knows games, its gameplay that makes it a game that always comes first unless its a genre that relies on story or something other to sell.A game can compensate bad graphics for great gameplay and story. A game can't compensate bad gameplay and story for great graphics.

they're important in games which are supposed to provide an immersive experience, like first-person shooters
but most importantly, the gameplay needs to be there. a game can be fun and have bad graphics.

yes. graphics are like the clay that sculpts the worlds we play in. they're a fundamental aspect of any game.
I'm going to have to disagree with all the people who think that graphics aren't that important to them.
Has anyone really considered what "gameplay" actually is? Isn't gameplay actually the combination of all the basic things that make a game what it is -- controls, level design, storytelling, and graphics?
Think about it, you can't even have any "gameplay" without graphics. So obviously, graphics are an important element of gameplay. And in a case where all other things are equal, it's a no brainer that you would pick the graphically superior game to the graphically inferior game.
Furthermore, all the elements of gameplay feed off of each other. Why are more people attracted to HD games these days than non-HD games? It's because the same games that have the beautiful graphics are usually the same games with the better control schemes, level design, storytelling, etc. That's just the natural evolution of gameplay - better graphics allow the development of better level design, story telling, and control schemes, and vice versa.
It's also a simple truth that if you take away from one of the elements from the equation (e.g., superior graphics ) you get lesser gameplay. Am I saying that all PS3/360 games are superior to all other games simply by the fact that they have superior graphics? No. Graphics is only one element of gameplay. However, it's clear that a PS3/360 game that does everything else right (controls, story, design, etc) plus has superior graphics will be a better experience than a non HD game that does everything else right but has inferior graphics.
Does that mean that you can't enjoy games with lesser graphics? Of course not. But you're kidding yourself if you think that graphics don't have an important impact on the your gameplay experience.
