Hardly. Horror games make up a large portion of the indie games market with games like Slender and others such as Penumbra and Amnesia are considered some of the best.

Then there's more mainstream games like Dead Space and F.E.A.R. not to mention games with horror themes in them from Half-Life to Max Payne.

I'd say the horror genre is one of the healthiest out there at the moment.

Mainstream horror is dead. The best place to find horror games now are on PC where lots of indie games and mods are made. Which there are a lot of. Slender, SCP containment breach, Cry of Fear

and you have Amnesia coming next year which will be king of horror I think

Dark Souls is a horror game plenty of fear and scares in that game. Scared **** every time a huge enemy came out from nowhere.

Havent bought a new horror game in a while. Last one was Dead Space 2. I am thinking about picking up Dark Souls though.

As others have stated, Horror is dead in the mainstream, but it does not mean that Horror is dead.

While the PC have had a fair number of horror games this gen, it does not mean that the consoles were at a complete loss either, but those that were made, were not very hyped. Almost having stealth releases.

If you look enough you WILL find horror games, but as mentioned, the mainstream dislikes any real challange, or high stress level, Im unsure which but if you look at games like RE, Deadspace and such, you do see a clear trend, namely enough ammo for huge guns, that blows away anything remotely unsetteling. Effectively losing those games the "horror" aspect.

I don't care what people say, a game can not truely be a horror game, when they player is far more scary then whenever lurks in the dark, since, lets face it, us the players play those games with a sadistic grin on our lips with a sense of indestructability. So who are the most scary being in that corridor? The sorry monster, of the madman weilding a big enough arsenal to wage war on a small country.

An odd side notion, anyone noticed how this also seems like it became more prevelent in western horror movies?

I'd like to see more horror games, there's nothing I like more than the satisfaction of a game actually managing to scare me and make me nervous to push forward.

Dead Space, F.E.A.R. and Alan Wake were excellent, scary experiences!

For consoles they're pretty much dead. Sure, there's Dead Space 1/2, Condemned 1/2, but really that's about it. Yes, there is Silent Hill, but it has yet to come back to the level of SH 2 or 3. The PC has Amnesia, which looks to be pretty good, and while everyone says Slender, I just don't see how that game is even fun to play, I'd rather just go back to a Fatal Frame game. Apparently the PS3 is getting a horror game made for the Move, which most people won't be able to play, but will give me a reason to dust off the Move.

Dead? No. Compared to what era btw?

Mainstream there have never been many horrorgames.

The indiemarket is broadening the genre considerably nowadays so if anything I'd say the horror genre is growing with immensely popular games like Slender and Amnesia.

That is true, but none of them are truly scary....Game developers need to come together and make something that will truly scare tha living daylights out of us....i kno this title got crappy reviews but Alan Wake almost hit it.

Traditional survival-horror (exploration-focused, puzzle-based, limited resources, etc.) games have been dead for a while now. Most "horror" games now are simply action games with a sprinkling of scary bits in between. I wish I had a decent PC so I could play Amnesia: Dark Descent.

ZombieU looks great and I've got it preordered, but is it really going for the oldschool Resident Evil feel or the more modern style of 4+? Like I said, I'm not sure, the previews I've seen could go either way, but I hope you're right.
