Are the Final Fantasy games any good?

So I was at a yard sale today and this guy had a bunch of ps1 games. He had Fnal Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy IX. Unfortunally one of the discs to VII was missing, but I picked up IX. I'm not much of an RPG fan, so I was wondering if it was worth playing and if I should pick up some of the other games in the series. What are your thoughts?

Shame about the FF7 disc because it's widely considered one of the best FF games. FFIX is great also. The FF franchise as a whole is very popular amongst JRPG fans. Possilby more so than any other JRPG out there.

Many fans appreciate the history, music and gameplay than graphics. But for you who are unfamiliar, FF IX is a good start.

Final Fantasy IX is a good game. The characters are weird in some ways but overall it's a good game. The equipment/skills system is one of the best of any RPG

Yes alot of them are great. Of the ones I've played IV and VI are the best.

In my opinion, all the FFs to FFX and prior are awesome. My personal favorites in the FF series are FFVII, FFVIII, and FFX. After FFX they are very hit and miss, but mostly miss. FFXI was meh, FFXII was awful in my opinion, and FFXIII was alright.

IX is the game that got me into Final Fantasy and RPGs. It's wonderful.

For an MMO it was alright, however it can barely be called an FF game given the dramatic change in gameplay format.

I've only played I, IV, and VI, and VI is definitely my favorite out of all of these. One of the greatest RPGs I've played so far.

As for me they become easily boring after a great start

FFXI is not a Final Fantasy game, it never existed, lets brush it under the carpet with XIV and continue pretending they were never there.

I feel like that merger destroyed some of the best gaming franchises to exist, and many of their new IPs over the past few years have been mediocre for the most part. It's just really sad considering both Squaresoft and Enix used to be the gold standard for RPG development.

It is a very god looking game, but I couldn't stand the battle system and also the story was boring to me. I had a hard time caring what happened next and about 5-hours in I just couldn't handle it anymore. A lot of people do like FFXII, but I will personally never understand why.

IX is the game that got me into Final Fantasy and RPGs. It's wonderful.

Same with me, IX got me into RPG games to begin with

They're good. Especially IX and XII

Very tempted to snark and be all "Nope, they're terrible, that's why there's been over a dozen of them".

Loved Final Fantasy X. Enjoyed VI til it glitched out in my SNES back in the day.

Try finding FFVI too, that game is amazing. Better than VII and IX, IMO.

IX is one of my favorite FFs. The characters are a welcome departure from the rest of the games since humans are not the main setting like the others are. You get to play as most of them as well during the story and it has a feature where you can view what other party members are doing when you are out walking in the city or woods. I found it to be very enjoyable. IX also sticks to its FF roots unlike 7 and 8 which brought different systems to their games. I recommend picking up as well 7 if that disc is ever recovered.

Final Fantasy is a very good Jrpg franchise. Starting with FFIX is pretty good since that game is awesome.

I haven't played the ps1 era FF games, but I've checked out the handheld remakes of the earlier ones and the ps2 ones and they were pretty good, some better than others of course.
