Are there any games that are straight-forward in progression?

That's the best way I could word that question, but I'm looking for a game that progresses as the game goes along. Nothing where the game expects you to look for the next part of the game, but rather IS the game itself.

Here's an example on what I mean by "side things." Remember how in Ocarina of Time, you basically had to find your way into the next level and so on? Well, I never considered the actual stages to begin until I entered the temples. Yeah, I know that I keep using the same games to make different points, but I haven't played that many games. Hence, why I'm asking the question.

A particular game I'm looking for is set up like this. You begin the game, a certain task begins. As soon as that ends, the very next task begins. Once you complete that one, another task begins, and this goes on and on. I'm looking for a game like this. To go back to a game again (lol), Sonic Adventure 2. You complete a stage, you watch a scene, you go on to the very next stage. Something like that (as opposed to something like Sonic Unleashed, where you have to do something or collect medals to even get to the next stage).

What makes my search harder is, there's WWWWWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY too much to do in modern games, and it's just... well, let's just say that I want a simplistic game. No menu-selection of missions, no crapton of side-missions, no extra tasks to get to the next stage, none of that. I just want to hit "enter" and play the game. However, from my research, there aren't too many games that do this.

Any thoughts?

@Coco_pierrot: Not any Open world game.

In LA Noir there's no dilly dallying. You go to your next case as soon as your previous one ends.

@Lulu_Lulu: unless you wanna do street crimes or look for landmarks and film reels. Then there's stuff to dilly-dally with.

@mastermetal777:

Luckily you don't need to do those.

However the street crimes were a nuisance.

@Lulu_Lulu: some were fun. But if it was a linear game, it'd probably be stronger.

@mastermetal777:

Its not necessarily the street crimes themselves that bothered me..... its the way the announced them over the radio while my partner was talking to me..... that plus theres no way to turn them off....... actually theres is but you get what I mean.

What game systems do you own? I'm going to assume a Wii because it could potentially play all the games you mentioned, but all those games are available on multiple systems so I could be wrong.

Most 2D Mario games progress the way you want, so New Super Mario Bros Wii and most of the old Marios on Virtual console would work. Stay away from the 3D titles like Mario Galaxy and 64. Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat and all of the Wii Kirby games would be worth checking out. Oh, and lets not forget Sonic: Colors. That game is like Sonic Adventure 2, where levels come one after the other and there are cutscenes between them.

Similar to LA Noire, Mafia II was open world but linear in terms of progression. It's been a long time since I played it, but I don't think there were any side missions.

Other good games ----Darksiders 1 and 2 (similar to Zelda); Ninja Gaiden series, Devil May Cry series, Resident Evil 4, The Evil Within---these games are linear in that you progress level by level, but you gain abilities and upgrades as you progress.

Basically any linear game, especially shooters.
