Are there any games that you only play once in a generation?

In my experience, there have been some games that I enjoyed playing, and I usually only play through them once in a generation because they are satisfactory or in some cases good, but the experiences start to feel like unnecessary burdens. Are there any games like that for you?

Some games that come to mind:

  • The original Max Payne games
  • Red Faction story mode
  • Lost Planet
  • The original Splinter Cell trilogy

Crash Racing on PS1, but are you also asking if we still enjoy it?

I'll buy a Call of Duty game once a generation. And I own one hockey game per console.

Though I think what you meant was a series you only liked for one generation, like how Splinter Cell was huge for gen 6 then died off in gen 7. In which case I loved Rock Band and still play it from time to time, but I have no desire to get the new one.

@Ant_17: As I said, I am only asking about the games that people play once in a generation, so once in the 6th generation and perhaps once in the 7th, etc.

I've decided that per gen, I'll only buy one Mortal Kombat (favorite fighting series), one Need for Speed (usually a favorite racing series) and one GTA. I'm waiting until GTA6 for PS4.

To me, these are series that only get a leap better once per gen.

As for playing a game once per gen, I generally don't buy games I'll only play once.

Folks, in case there is a misunderstanding, I am asking about games that you play once in one generation then you play again in another generation, if any.

I always replay games I enjoyed more than once, so I don't think this applies to me too much.

Can't really think of anything that would fit that. Maybe GTA San Andreas if I end up getting that on the PS4 at some point. I got it on the PS3 a long time ago but didn't play it too much. Played it a ton on the PS2 and I still have some desire to try to re-live some of the enjoyment I had with it.

I agree with OP, I only enjoyed Splinter Cell in the PS2 era, which was it's original era. Since then, the sequels just haven't worked.

I haven't played any Crash Bandicoot game since PS1, Tekken since PS1/2 and Street Fighter since the last 90s lol

Very rarely. If I don't play them again it usually means I didn't enjoy them.

Well, I wonder about if you play a game, and you enjoy it and internalize the story as well as internalize the gameplay as part of the story. Therefore, when playing through a second time, the gameplay is thought of as a retelling of the narrative along with the cutscenes and other dialogue, so you understand all of the details of the level design from a player view, and you can recall the sensory experience of what that first playthrough was like for a significant amount of time. It is only after a gaming generation or so that said memory begins to not represent the specifics of the experience and is generalized, so another experience would help with the specifics of the experience, again.

Just to clarify the question: at first I thought you were asking if there were games re DO replay, but only replace once every __ years or so (i.e., once a "generation"). But I think you are asking what games we enjoyed but don't intend to replay again?

If the latter - I'd say many linear story-driven games. Even if they are good (sometimes BECAUSE they are good), a once-through is often sufficient. However, as they start to add branching outcomes based on decisions and expanded worlds and gameplay (more RPG elements) they do start to capture replayability. The games I most regularly replay are those designed for it: Strategy games, in particular. Games like Thief 1+2 where the stealth is so good you feel like you can solve the "puzzle" of a level from a fresh perspective. System Shock 2 et al where you can replay the game with a dramatically different style.

I can't really think of any games that I replay these days. It's not because I don't want to replay any of the games that I play, it's only because there's so many great games coming out that I want to play that I just don't have the time to play them again.

I agree - I mostly look for a new experience when a game is done, regardless of whether it was good or bad.

Same here, If I playthrough a game that I enjoyed but lose interest, I usually trade it in.

This is a pretty convoluted way to ask " Do you replay older games or series more often then just once, despite there coming out newer games?"

Inwhich case the answer is yes.
