I was recently having a talk with my friend about the 20th anniversary of Metal Slug and he suggested that SNK should do a remake of the original game in HD which sounds pointless to me because the original game is the pinnacle of pixel art and a masterpiece of 2d run'n'gun you can only have inferior replications of it.

I'm totally down with remakes like the gamecube's Resident evil but games like Metal Slug is something i don't think can be properly remade and it doesn't need a remake as its still just as good as it was back then..

I'll say The Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver games shouldn't be remade. Yeah everyone want's to see that happen but the games were great in there own times and shouldn't be remade at all.

I'd say those games that have aged well from a gameplay standpoint, such as Mario 64 or OoT don't really need a remake. The fixed camera angles and pre-rendered backgrounds in FFVII have become pretty antiquated, and while they work, a remake really can bring something new to the game. Aside from prettier graphics what could an OoT remake add that the original game doesn't have? The same can go for Donkey Kong 64, Metroid Prime, most castlevanias and the such.

Well, the obvious choice is any stylized game, because remaking it with updated graphic's would be pretty pointless. That said,I'd probably say something like Limbo or, and this one probably doesn't have anything to do with my previous comment, but Jet Set Radio Future, because it's more or less perfect as it is, but some people I know actually want it to be remade again for some reason

Most games made in the past 10 years. Because they've aged well 'that's why ports called ReMasters are a thing', or because they don't deserve another chance. I like all these pixilated games getting remakes because many I missed due to my age.

Wouldn't count reboots though, as they're intentionally unfaithful.

Some games were a product of their time and would be out of place now. Battletoads is one example off of top of my head.

No. I think if a developer wants to remake any game then they should. If it interests me then I'll buy it, if not then I won't.

Except for Legacy of Kain, no game deserves to be remade. (no offense to Davillain)

since X-Com got remade already, no, not really. not many old games out there, that haven't been perfected further since those days, or that would be relevant still today.

i must say that Legacy Of Kain/Souls Reaver is a nice idea, but maybe not remakes... full-on sequels would be nice.

As long as they keep "true" to the original game, I don't see a problem with remakes myself.

@RSM-HQ: I agree on that thankfully no one is remaking 10 yr old games and games like Metal Slug&Symphony of Night haven'y aged Graphically.

Hmm, not really or it really depends on who is remaking it, if its a unkown indie dev team which ends up consisting of 2 15 year old kids in their moms basement/garage, it usually ends up being crap on crap and it would have been better not made at all.

But if it's a proper studio i think most old games that were great will still be great so most remakes end up excellent and we as gamers the richer.

OoT had horrible controls and a truly abominable camera system that could be fixed through a remake. Mario 64 also had a camera system that actively fought against the player so that could be rectified completely. Back then, the developers just didn't understand that the camera should stick where the player stops it, not spring back into the default position that the player moved it away from because it was a bad position.

Donkey Kong 64 was a miserably awful game though, no remake could fix how abominable that collectathon piece of garbage was.

Three come to mind. Final Fantasy XIII, simply because it would probably be a flop and divide the fanbase. Drakengard, because it would probably be changed for the worst to fit both today's market and the evolved mythology of the series. Prince of Persia The Sands of Time, it's alright as it is (would much rather see an all-new Prince of Persia than "yawn" yet another Assassin's Creed).

Huh, I don't remember having much difficulty with the camera in OoT, maybe a bit in Mario 64. Of course a remake would certainly polish the games up a lot, but I feel they've aged pretty well nonetheless. Also I had fun with Donkey Kong 64 I don't know what you're talking about :(

If you were to replay DK64 you'd think to yourself "how did I ever enjoy this?" You just complete the same map over and over with different characters, hunting down the different collectibles. It's really mindless. I would say that I was let down by the game but I was pretty over Rare as developers as a whole by that point. Their 3D games were just so lackluster.
