I just wondered if there were any young retro gamers out there.

Growing up my first console/computer was an Atari 65XE. I grew up through alot of the generations of gaming so they still interest me. I guess some of it is reliving my youth, bringing back memories and some of it is getting hold of consoles and games that I didn't have first time around.

I was just wondering if retro gaming appeals to the younger generation or not?

I'm 17 and I still play my n64 regularly. Sometimes for nostalgic reasons but most of the time its becuase the games are still as fun as they were 12 years ago(Mario Kart 64, SSB, Banjo, Zelda, JFG)

Define young...Would being 20 count?
Because then heck yes!...Anything from the 2600 to the PS3...as long as its good and had recognition I will try the game at least once.

not really, Im 22 and generally play games from the Master System and after, so I wouldn't say Im a young gamer.

at the same time, Im not in my 30s like some retro gamers are.

I'm 19. My first system was a Genisis, but I didn't start to play a lot untill I got a GCN. (I played N64 a fair bit I guess, though I didn't beat a single game on it at the time)

But now, I play games from NES to current. I finally went back and beat some of the N64 games I played back then, though I still didn't beat any of those Genisis games... But I went back and played a lot of classic games I never played when they were new, such as Mega Man, Classic Final Fantasy, some of the older Tales games, and more.

Though I own very few old consoles, most of my retro gaming is done via classic collections, digital downloads, or in some cases, backward compatability.

By this definition I barely miss the cutoff :(. The oldest console I play regularly is the NES, and it officially came out in the US a year before I was born. I'm 24.

I'm 17 (starting to see a pattern, OP?), but I mostly retro game on the PlayStation and Nintendo 64. I can't really be half-assed enoughto track down older gen consoles, all of my childhood nostalgia comes from playing GoldenEye after school and on my friends PlayStation anyway and I have peter pan syndrome with my gaming.

I know a few 13 year olds that are big in retro collecting, and playing older games aswell (such as on the Atari 2600). Considering the number of humans on this planet, that are millions of 10 - 17 year olds probably, but that's just a generalization, there's probably many, many more. As for my self, i'm a grown ass man, but i only started gaming in like 2006 and since then i've got 6 consoles, which none are from this generation, and i really love most of the games i play on these systems.

I'm seeing a pattern here. Most people keep playing the systems they liked as kids but nothing earlier. I actually do the same but I'm ancient compared to a lot of you.

i suppose you've never had a console handed down to you, he probably has older brothers. I had an nes/snes when i was 3/4, my brothers gave them to me when they got playstations.

I'm 31 and don't quite enjoy playing the nes like i used to, i looooove the super nintendo still. But the nes's 8 bit graphics are getting slightly funky to me at this point and i play it for nostalgia. Even thou i grew up around the 2600 it's unplayable to me, hell it was unplayable to me back in 86 when i got a nes. Even at 6 years old once i laid eyes on a NES the 2600 looked like dog crap.

I always felt sorry for the kids who had Atari when I was a kid... I agree that the NES doesn't quite do it anymore but that is mostly because it doesn't have battery saves for anything but RPGs and Zelda. I like my Game Boy. Things like Super Mario Land 2 have an old school 8-bit feel but your progress is saved throughout so you can play for fifteen minutes at a time and still get through it, which you cannot w/ even stuff like SMB 3. I am probably gonna get my first SNES in the next couple months so maybe I'll switch and never look back but I doubt it.

I'm 16 right now and I have an SNES, which was out before I was even born. Plus some of my favorite games like EarthBound and Chrono Trigger came out before I was a year old.

well "young" is a relative term. But Personally I'm probably average or above average in these forums (31). It seems most kids nowadays are strictly into COD games. My friend has a 12yr old son that plays nes some, but mostly wii.

Well I am 20 years of age, and I play old games, I enjoy new ones more for the most part. But really fun games will be good forever. And besides that I don't like knowing that I could be missing out on amazing experiences/ games.

I had an NES, but I can barely remember anything from it other than the SMB games. I started making real gaming memories with the SNES/Genesis, but I do still enjoy some NES games (the Mega Mans, LoZ I & II, Metroid, generally the big stuff). Never played a single Atari game.

I'm not exactly the "retro and young" that fits the topic. My main gaming habits have centered around 'current-gen' but still keeping 'last-gen' stuff around - console, handheld and PC. I was born in 1978, so the main consoles I could say I played that were 'before my time' were the 2600 and the Intellivision. While I've owned those at different times, the "Sears Atari VCS" quit working shortly after I got it (around 1990) and I sold the Intellivision around 1992. The games are memorable and if I could fix the 2600, I'd probably play it again. Honestly, most of the 'retro' stuff mentioned here and in Legacy Platforms in general is stuff I played when it was new and still play every once in a while.

i would rather play an atari 2600 than most current gen games(dark and gritty, fps, casual) which equals to 90% of current games. and being 20, that says alot

This thread makes me happy. It's not just nostalgia keeping old systems alive.

I'm 28 and the first system I owned was an Atari or a Coleco. I was pretty young so I don't remember which one, or any games besides Frogger, just that it was a clunky black square box with a simple joystick controller. Currently the oldest console I own is a Genesis and I don;t forsee myself going any further back than that. I do plan on getting some other SEGA stuff down the line though, a SEGA CD add-on and a Dreamcast. Undecided on a Saturn though...

My favourite console of all time was the original PlayStation, and I still continue and collect games for that console. I wouldn't define it as retro, but my collection and playtime of games from two generations ago far exceeds that of the current generation.

I'm 16 and own a SNES, a Mega Drive, a PS1, An original Game Boy and a GBA. To answer the question: Yes, I am retro and young.
