...when the game gets harder and harder? For me, I get more determined. I start taking it personally. I make it a goal to beat that game for the crap it's been putting me through. I used to give up all the time though. I bought so many games that if one became too frustrating, I simply quit and moved on to something else, but now, I view unfinished games as a waste of money. I like knowing that I can pick a game to play, stick with it and see it through to the end, no matter how hard, difficult, challenging or cheap it may be.

Determined if I feel it's my fault and not some control problem. I usually don't care to finish games that require me to learn and invest a lot of time in them. But things like Super Meat Boy or leader boards for racing games I will keep on going at it until I finish, no matter how many times it takes.

Yeah, I love being competitive in racing games. Haven't in a long time, though. I actually held a world record for a time trial in Ridge Racer 6, but that was back in 2006. I'm sure it's been broken by now.

I have been known to rage quit on occasion, but I quickly get over my anger and come back to finish what I started. What it comes down to is that I really don't like failing and I don't like leaving games unfinished. Plus it feels really good when you do finally beat that game.

I do that too. I'll take a break for a few minutes and come back and usually overcome my obstacle.

i'm only determined in racing games where i know it's my fault. Any other game, as soon as i get frustrated i tend to give up. Frustration is not fun, and fun is why i play games .

Yeah same here. I only quit if i'm very short in time. But wen i have time, i make it my goal to beat the game. It's very silly to frustrate your self 20 times until you beat that certain section/level/whatever, but i can't help it. The feeling of winning in a punishingly hard game is sweet, and failing once just makes me try again.

Yeah, I was first in Mario Kart Wii in my region (I think Americas) and in the top 10 in the world for this one course. It was fun.

Depends on the challenge and my perception of it, as well as whether I'm gunning for an achievement. If it feels unfair and I see no way of getting through it, I'm likely to quit and only come back if I really like the game. Example: In Men of War campaign, in one defense mission you're outnumbered and outgunned by a wide margin. And while holding by the skin of my teeth is kind of fun, when they bring up several armored columns as well as superheavy artillery and I'm meant not only to hang on, but actually break through and destroy the artillery, and I see no sensible way of doing that, I ragequit and just now, after 2 years, I'm going to give it another try. But in Call of Duty World at War veteran, where it's 50% luck and 50% skill, the frustration was phenomenal, but I still managed to beat that damn mission after hours of effort, because I was after the achievements.

Depends on the game. Usually when it involves level grinding I usually give up... because it's not an ability issue, you just have to waste time. And i don't have time.

I don't typically give up. But recently I gave up while playing Little Big Planet on one of it's last levels. I got sick of having to replay the whole level when I get near the end and miss difficult jumps that don't work well when Sackboy moves like he is always on roller skates. I have little patience for bad game design. That game's control scheme is so basic, and yet they managed to screw it up in several ways.

Ninja Gaiden had me giving up. The ninjas with the exploding kunai really made me feel like throwing the controller against the wall. That game was just so diffucult.

Depends entirely on the situation.

But it is very rare that I give because it's hard, which reminds me I still have Ninja Gaiden to beat.

Later.

While I know what you mean I felt that they were definitely beatable and not unreasonably difficult. Dead to Rights, now thats a game that was insane and I reached a point late in the game where I seriously was not able to beat it so I just gave up. Absolutely no regrets on that one, it was so difficult I had no fun playing through it and I usually turn the game up one notch above normal when i play games.

Depends if it's trivial by my standards. I know I'll never even start Super Meatboy or other reaction based games, I don't have the patience for trial and error. But if the difficulty level has been gradually increasing, and I've invested a lot of time into it, yeah I get real determined.

It's either all in, or not at all.

It depends on the game for me. If the difficulty is well-designed and when I die is my fault, like Bayonetta or Demons Souls, then I get determined to beat it.

But if the difficulty is not designed well and it's more of a cop-out to make the game appear harder just because it's in the latter levels, then I'll just give up or tone down the difficulty. Like the last two chapters in Dead Space 2. The game was good until the final moments. I don't think throwing waves of relentless bad guys at you is good game design. It actually made me hate the game towards the end. If the final chapters were excellent and ended well, I'd say Dead Space 2 would be my top 5 of this gen. But it ended on a sour note.

The first Far Cry also comes to mind. Those darn mutant bad guys, I just cringe everytime I think about them!

I can't remember the last time I gave up on a game, oh yeah 1998. But since then I have completed every game I have played, usually multiple times and on harder difficulty settings.

If it's hard because it's hard i will keep at it until the end.

If it's hard because the camera is stuck over in the corner and i'm getting gibbed through a wall with no collision detection by 4 guys i can't even see i will quit.

For me it depends on the game and whether I think it's cheap or not. For example Super Meat Boy, Bayonetta, and most FPSes I just get more determined and evenutually get past it. However cheap parts of FPSes can cause me to give up. The Vietnam level in Black Ops and the part where you have to protect McMilan in COD4 caused me to not play for weeks due to the cheapness of an insane number of enemies, no decent weapons, and no real way to protect yourself. Then there's games like Dragon Age: Origins where the game is slightly skewed towards a certain class and others get killed easily and quickly where I got to a certain point and went "I really can't go farther due to the fact I'm the wrong class. I really don't wanna spend another x hours getting back to this point."

I'd say more determined, for the most part. On occasion, a game will come around that just kicks my ass, and I'll give up once or twice in the span of a few weeks, but I nearly always come back and beat it later on. Sometimes much later on, but I don't let that game win forever.

lol :3 that is what I do... although it is just a couple days break. What I have found with frustrating games is that if you take breather, or pause the game and calm your heart rate, your gaming method is much more stable and you are able to beat the difficult part of the game with more ease :3 ( yay run on sentence? )

Judging by your gamercard, you haven't really played any difficulty games except Perfect Dark, so where are you getting these "frustrating games" from?

lol? Judging by my gaming card? The xbox 360 that I've owned for only half a year? You can't seriously be using that as a means to determine whether I've played difficult games or not? Speaking of which, did I ask for your judging attitude?

There you go, all of the games that I can remember that I have beaten are rated here. So just because I am a girl doesn't mean I can't play difficult video games. Edit: or parts of videogames that are difficult :3

Well you claimed "your controller" so I knew you weren't talking about PC, and you also have no evidence you own a PS3 anywhere in your profile, so I knew you weren't talking about that. I kind of assumed that one would be playing a next gen system this much into this gen (the 360) rather than still playing a bunch of old games. As for judging, I was only commenting because of your comment in a previous thread where you bragged about how you were the best at every genre there was, but your 360 gamercard does not reflect that and the games you listed aren't very hard. This has nothing to do with gender so I fail to see why you always bring that up. I'm not trying to be rude, I just asked an innocent question because you always seem to be bragging about your gaming skills.

The harder the game, the more determined I am to finish it. On the other hand if I find a game too easy I tend to be less determined and it takes me a life time to finish unless it has a gripping story, then I stick with it to the end.

So your argument is that I can't make a judgment on frustrating videogames because in YOUR opinion I havn't played "Difficult Xbox 360 games"? Logic Fallacy, Xbox 360 wasn't the first console, and it certainly wasn't the first console to have difficult videogames. I have been playing videogames for 23-24 years now. So let us go through your 360 games under that logic, where are your difficult and frustrating games, I see none... black ops? really?

Because you thought you had a point to make, you saw a girly anime signature and avatar, you have no point and it wasn't innocent nor was it a polite assertion of logic ( or logical logic... ). As there are many other players posting here with far less of a record than I, I find it odd how you singled me out. Giving the gender discrepancy here, I could only come to one conclusion as to why you would dispute my gaming over the many other posters here.

Edit: Bragging? No, I was talking about how it is easier to beat a difficult game if you take pauses inbetween. In what manner was this bragging? Again you are pulling at straws and attempting to rationalize your previous post.

Depends on the game and the kind of ddifficulty. I like it if a game stays fair, but onc eit gets cheapt I usually give up (like Fighters with enemies that can block and attack at the same time)

I relaize the Xbox 360 was not the first console, I never even said anything remotely close to that, how long you have been playing games is irrelevant. I would think though that with how long the 360 has been out and how you always play hard games that you would have more than one remotely hard game. I never said I had difficult or frustrating games, though I have the CoDC (CoD1), MoHF, KZ2, Demon's Souls, Dead Space 2, and Batman AA Platinums which are all considered fairly difficult games. I don't believe it's fair to single me out based on one game I've played out of 100, I see you've played Barbie Game Girl (based on your rated games), should I single that one game out and judge your skill based on just that one? Meanwhile, you seem to say that Black Ops and CoD is such a simple game series, however you provide no PSN ID and your XBL gamertag has no evidence of you even playing CoD, let alone beating it on veteran, which you probably should to claim it's a simple game.

Your avatar and gender have nothing to do with it so don't say that I said they do. I already said before that it was because in another thread you said you were "the best" at every game genre and that you seem to have a habit of showing off about your gaming skills.

No need to get defensive over an innocent question, I'm sorry if I somehow offended you.

Usually when a game get's to the point where I'm completely stuck and end up dying or wasting copious amounts of time trying to continue I resort to the internet for a walkthrough or youtube video. Sometimes if I really want to finish the game but am completely done with trying to beat it i'll resort to an exploit or cheat. Not the best solution but I hate leaving a game behind and not knowing the ending. The last game I remember completely giving up on was the original HalfLife. Got all the way to the final boss but after 50+ attempts I couldn't figure out how to kill him. We didn't have internet at the time and I didn't know anyone else who had played the game so I just gave up on finishing it. Some years later I watched a youtube video on how to kill the guy.

I take it personally when competing against other people. I definitely can't stand to not be the best at something competitive like that, though the only games I've liked enough to give the effort to get better in the past 5 years were COD4 and the Bfield series. I like Halo too, but I've always been pretty good at it because I've played so much of it since the very beggining of the series.

If I'm having no fun while playing, then why am I playing at all? I mine as well be doing homework otherwise. I'm playing Mario Galaxy 2 now, and completely skip some galaxies because they're simply frustrating (glide and spring). So yea, if it ceases to be enjoyable I turn it off.

I just tank through it.... Only time I quit a game, is when it becomes boring.

Ninja Gaiden had me giving up. The ninjas with the exploding kunai really made me feel like throwing the controller against the wall. That game was just so diffucult.

Oh man, I know how you feel. At a certain time it took me 2 hours to beat a sub-boss and when I finally did it, I turn the corner and run straight into an explosive shuriken killing me instantly. I could beat the boss all over again (didn't take that long though) It took me 760 deaths (!) to finish this game on Path of the Mentor. But those f**kers got their comeuppance! How's that for perseverence? :P

I usually try many times, but if it feels too cheap then I give up.

Depends how compelling the game is. To me dying or losing in games isn't what stops me, it's just horribly designed ones. That said, I usually give up when the game is repetitive, formulaic etc.

If the game starts to aggravate me, i would give up then come back to it another day.Evolution-X0
This is what I do. I find that the harder I try, the worse I become and I just get annoyed and make more mistakes. If I leave a game for a while, say a couple of weeks or even a few months, then when I return to it I find the game much easier to pick up and complete. For example, I was stuck on the last boss of Sonic Unleashed (360 version) for a while and just gave up. I left it for a few months, loaded it up again, and got through it instantly. It's odd how that happens.

Were you stuck on that part with the rock giant? That's where I was stuck.

I never picked it back up as I didn't really enjoy the game enough that I felt the need to beat it.

it depends how it's getting harder. If it's getting harder in a mindless or trivial way, I probably won't play past the intial entertainment value. Because your success will be connected to random things that you have little effect on and it just becomes a game of trial and error. Where you might be successful 1 out of every 100 attempts, no matter what you do. Now if I can discover and use strategies, that will prove to be successful if used skillfully then I'm much more likely to continue playing because I can predict the out come of my actions and see the effect on the game. I don't take it personal in any sense if the game behaves erratically in order to create difficulty. There are many games where this happens and all you can do is hope to survive past the basic fundementals of your actions as everything else is outside of your control.

Determined, but I do take a small break so to clear my mind and try to come up with a solution to the problem I'm having. Unless it's Battletoads, then I just keep going and try to beat level 3 again and again.

If I've spend hard earned cash on something, I'll complete it.
