Well PS3/360 and PS4/X1 gens won't be that interesting for retro gaming in a gen or two because of that. Many games only playable online or have a crappy single player mode because online was the focus ... or games like MKX will be crap too even when playing offline because there is too many thing working with the net ...

So all those type of game will be dead brick and the other single plater game, without the access to the update patch that make the game wonderful will turn them into average at best game.

Little Big Planet 3 comes to mind, but it was never fixed, they just added a ton of cosmetic garbage hoping everyone would forget the game is broken. But like many for me the damage was already done. Developer Sumo Digital are known for sloppy work, but killed a beloved IP for me. And that hurt.

Yet. I don't mind the updates if it makes something great, better. Look at Dark Souls III, the game launched and worked without patches. The patches just addressed some small bugs and re-balanced bosses, armor and weapons.

I see no issue when you make an amazing game just a little better. And with the Fire Fades Edition many won't have those hounds appearing in mid-air at the Road of Sacrifices like I did at launch. Though it is worth noting the game still has some funny issues with enemies clipping in objects. Doesn't break the game but very funny to see.

Then I read games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and think to myself they could have held off that game for afew months to improve the frame-rate for its release version.

Overall I've got a mixed view on the subject. But best advice I would give is, if you don't want a flawed product, or at least the game with all the address patches? Wait for a GotY edition. Don't buy into the hype, and just buy an older game with a complete edition while you wait.

Pretty much.

And also you gotta realize these days companies are on tight schedules and budgets - and they're making huge, complex games... it's just the way it is.

I knew Fallout 4 would require patches for ages - and I'm still waiting for the complete edition!

Game companies are becoming more and more cynical. Releasing games based on lies and paid off previews and reviesws. People need to stop preordering and that would kill part of the problem.

I'm completely sick of it. Buying a physical copy is next to useless now because every game has like gigabytes worth of patches and updates. I wouldn't mind this if I lived in a country that has decent net speeds but with my download speed being 128 KBps, you can see why I'm annoyed about this.

If they made physical copies with all the latest patches and updates, I'd be so happy but the best I can do for now is to wait for the Game of the Year edition/Director's Cut of a game, which may still require an update or two to properly run.

I don't like this duct-tape approach to making video games.
