After watching the developer diaries ACII I have really gotten excited about this game. I recently beat the first one a couple of weeks ago and while it was fun the action became monotonous and the story was a little shallow. I think it comes down to just not liking the modern day tie-in while being an old-age assassin.

With the mention of all the changes and directions that they are taking with this second installment I am eager to play ACII as soon as it comes out.

I'm really excited for it. I'm glad that they've taken a lot of effort to avoid the repetition of the first game. Exploring new cities in sandbox games is one of my all time favorite things to do. I'll probably spend a lot of time just running around and scaling high points before I really even try to chip away at the single player. I loved turning off the HUD in the first one and exploring.

That was the first thing I did in the first one. I just ran around the citys and hit all the viewpoints to open up the whole map before I even went to the guild

I'm definitely stoked for this game. Flaws and all, I still enjoyed the first game - until the mind-numbing repetitiveness set in. If they fix those things (and from early accounts, they have) then this one could be a contender.

I'm not sure if anyone wanted some information on the game, but I guess I will share anyways.

I am a few hours into the game, and from the beginning I was thinking to myself, "I cannot wait to play AC: III." I know, I know...That sounds crazy, but it's true. The way the game fills you in on where you left off, and the fact that the reason for the use of the Animus is immediately revealed to you really boosts your anticipation for the rest of this game, and the sequel.

Obviously, and hard to believe, the visuals are much better than the original. The game's presentation is simply fantastic. The free-running is even smoother than before, and respectfully difficult enough to get around.

The awareness meter, and the guards pursuit and tracking systems are simply just a hell of a lot of fun. Getting too close gets guards suspicious, or perhaps out of the norm behavior such as climbing, sprinting through crowds or knocking people over. All of the guards awareness is really determined by the player, or the mission. If your awareness meter is red, guards are on their toes, ready to jump at the slightest slip-up from the player. It's exciting, and sometimes challenging at the same time.

As a musician, when it comes to video games, the music tends to stick out to me. The music in the game is astounding; perfectly fitting the mood of the situation that the player is in. It really sets the tone.

You become attached to Ezio, unlike you were with Altair in the first due to a lack of story on the character. You're sort of with Ezio from the beginning, through the good times and the rough.

The combat is immaculate. As I enjoyed the visceral, smooth flowing combat from the first, Ubisoft has made it light years better. The hand-to-hand combat flows extremely well, from counters to side-stepping to blocking, as does the sword fighting. You are now able to use the hidden blade in combat, as opposed to being exclusive to counters in the first. The grab feature is much better in this, ranging from throwing enemies over ledges during combat, to holding them around the neck as hostage. From that standpoint, you may throw the enemy into another, rendering them both disabled. From there, you may take them both out from the ground. Or, while you hold the enemy hostage around the neck, you may simply execute them, and continue your fight on the others.

Now...You think I've got to the good part yet? Well I haven't. Just please keep in mind that what I'm telling you now is strictly my opinion and views on the game. This is what I've gotten out of it so far.

The stealth/action genre has been my favorite genre for 10 years, and seeing as how I originally bought the first Assassin's Creed primarily because of what was being advertised as "Social Stealth," the original really never truly had it. It was similar to a cheesy Tenchu game loading screen.

"Hide in the Shadows to avoid your enemy." Well...There weren't any shadows in Tenchu. =\

There wasn't really "stealth." There was just walking around. There really wasn't much stealth gameplay to be had. But...I am pleased to tell you that the stealth gameplay here is revolutionary to the stealth/action genre. The slogan, "The blade in the crowd," is a true slogan to AC:II. You are literally using the crowd as a cloak of invisibility from your enemies. Ezio will turn a dark grey color, to indicate to the player that you are hidden. From there, you may use moving or standing crowds to remain hidden and approach an enemy or simply move on to your destination. I am just blown away by the stealth gameplay and am so happy to be able to actually call it stealth gameplay.

Oh! Did I mentioned I'm only a few hours into the game?

LikeHaterade,

Thank you very much for your first impressions on ACII!

They got me really excited about the game and I'll be picking up my copy this morning. I have been awaiting the sequel with great anticipation andI have had high hopes for it. I haven't been watching the diaries or such, not even the previews, mainly because I want this game to be a surprise for me. I've read some previews though, but not all of them. So I can't wait to see what this game has to offer for me today. Should be a lot of fun!

I'm taking this game nice and slow, and the game seems to lend itself well to doing just that.

Already there is so much more to like about Ezio than there was about Altair. Ezio starts out as a mischievous, incorrigible, Italian rogue type where Altair was... what? An assassin... and that's all I remember about him.

You start your life at it's beginning and it doesn't just skip to you being an assassin. The events leading up to that are actually played out. You meet your Casanova brother, your worldly and strong-spirited mother, your mysterious and "connected" father, your spoiled sister and your sickly younger brother. You start the actual playable portion of the game (after playing the creepy, bloody-baby-puppet button-introduction sequence) as a carefree guy, chasing women and getting into trouble. Foreshadowing abounds when you and your brother are on a rooftop, hoping out loud that their simple lives never change.

I fully expect everyone to be dead before the next chapter starts!

_____________________________

The scenery, so far is beautiful. The streets are bustling. The architecture and art around the city is accurate and very well done. You have your treasure chests to seek out, you have feathers to find for your brother. The jobs start out simple, like acting as a courier or escorting your mom to meet Leonardo da Vinci... (!) I haven't done too many yet because I am trying not to advance the story too quickly, enjoying the pace of the opening/introductory chapter, and dreading the repetitiveness of the past game's "jobs"... IF that ever even happens.

I'm exploring rooftops for now, finding the vantage points. I don't have all my kick-butt weapons yet, so I am tending to run from fights and hiding when I can. The combat system is well done. Now that I think back, the original AC had the free-form type of fighting that Batman: AA was so well known for, and so does ACII. You've got your punches, grabs, throws and grappel attacks. Counters are still there, of course, and they are as fun as ever. I like the added touch of looting the downed bodies and the crowd's reaction when you do just that. Yup, this is definitely an AC game!

Hater covered the stealth sequences pretty well and seems to be further along in the game than I am, so I'll keep it brief.

I'm cautiously enjoying the game A LOT so far. The VASTLY improved character development, Magnificent setting and added almost-RPG-like elements to the game in an open world environment...!? Wow. Good job, Ubi. This goes to show what a tremendous development team, limitless funds and a good amount of time can do for a game's production values!

_____________________________

Oh... and Ezio can swim... already making him a much more capable and threatening killer than Al-whats-his-name...! :P

Great impressions Leo! I'm really glad to see that the character development has come a long way. Altair was, at best, boring and, at worst unlikeable. IGN gives it a 9.2
Assassin's Creed II transforms a middling action game into an intriguing and consistently entertaining open-world adventure. Based on this game, Ubisoft Montreal should run a clinic on how to iterate a franchise and if the series continues in this vein, the next installment will take aim at Rockstar's best efforts. The experience is layered, unique, and shows an incredible attention to detail. This is one case where the sequel has triumphed over the original by catching the gameplay up to the already excellent visuals. No matter what your preconceptions are about Assassin's Creed II, the game is well worth your time and money.

IGN UK gives it an 8.8IGN AU gives it a 9.0 I'll start digging for more reviews, as it will keep me from doing real work.:P

Hater mentioned this too, but I wanted to second his notion:

The climbing and free-running in the is game is MUCH improved!

Fluidly animated and much more under the player's control, it makes the game that much more interesting to play.

I don't remember having to think all that much when trying to get to the tops of towers and vantage points in the first game (granted, I never did finish it; I got bored waaay too quickly)... This game, climbing is actually a challenge sometimes! The third or fourth tall building I went to climb was not easy! In the first chapter alone, there is a huge tower north of the center of the town. Getting ON the building in the first place wasn't immediately obvious. Finding footholds to climb all the way to the top was tricky. NOT being distracted by the fact that there were open windows I could climb IN on the way up, to get treasure chests was another factor to consider. You can fall. You will die! I was holding my breath most of the way up! Doing a Leap of Faith from the top of a challenge like THAT? Very satisfying indeed!

I am sold!! Thank you guys for your impressions, it got me really interested now, I will be getting my copy on the weekend. I liked the concept of the first game, but I never really liked anything regarding the gameplay or the story, there was just so much potential and it all went to waste. But this time things are looking much better, It seems that they have really fixed all the issues and made one heck of a game!

It's so funny you describe this because I feel the exact same way as you, and moments ago I just climbed the same building as you. It was a BLAST climbing that building! I take it you're talking about Florence's Giotto's Campanile? The one you get an achievement from when you leap of faith from the top? That climb was an adrenaline rush! Call me a cheese ball, but my heart dropped at that leap of faith! =)

I just recently passed the part about the Stronghold. I won't explain that, which the videos rragnarr presented in the OP explain. I will explain some things that intrigue me about it. You are literally building up a stronghold from the ground up. When you first arrive at the stronghold, the atmosphere is very bleak and apathetic. Boarded windows, very few, decadent people wandering the streets, and even the art style given to the city itself just creates a lifeless place.

The city collects profit from travelers that stay or buy from stores. As landlord, you get a certain percentage of the revenue, and also a discount on all the local stores! :D Beneath the stronghold is a crypt of the Assassin bloodline that Ezio is kin to. Again, call me a cheese ball but this game is bringing back feelings I got from video games when I was a kid. It was similar to the feeling I got when I first stepped into the Temple of Time from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

[MINOR SPOILERS BELOW:]

There are artifacts to unlock for specific statues which are remnants to some of the most famous assassins throughout the past. In the center is the focal point of the room. Altair's armor. According to the nice lady running the Animus, when you acquire Altair's armor, you will have achieved 100% synchronization.
There are rooms for your weapons and armor that are purchased. As Phatom_Leo mentioned before, it feels similar to an RPG. Armor may be bought, along with weapons. When armor is equipped, you actually see the armor on Altair.

In terms of the cities themselves, just wow...With AC:I, it was fascinating to see the large, completely explorable cities in the distance, but after while you think to yourself, "What's in them?" NPC's walking around. AC:II has replaced that with an overwhelming feeling of content and life within the city. Fun optional side quests to accomplish, freak random occurrences with thieves and the city guard, searching for loot and pickpocketing.

The pickpocketing is a lot of fun. While you had the "Blend" option in AC:I by holding the "A" or "X"(I think, don't have a PS3), Altair would lower his head and lock his hands to appear as a monk. In AC:II, you have the "Walk Fast" option. When you walk fast and into an NPC, Ezio will use a little slide of hand and quickly pick pocket the NPC, and walk away as if nothing happened. Wait a few seconds to see the anger of the NPC afterward. Sometimes, you can get caught. Depending on who you were trying to rob, they may engage in a fist fight with you, or call the guards after your ass.

There is a lot more that I want to go into right now but I've already built up a mountain of text. =/

I have to come out and say this, I'm really annoyed with KVO's reviews of this and Dragon Age, he deducted point 5 from Dragon Age on 360 for the same issues AC2 suffers on PS3 but did not do the same for it. According to other reviews the the issues are much worse on PS3 AC 2 than Dragon Age 360, this kind of inconsistency annoys me greatly. I still enjoyed Dragon Age on 360 but I really find the validity of the reviews here on GS to be in question. That said I'm going to pick my 360 copy of AC2 in a few moments. I have take any of these reviews with a very small grain of salt, I do find a bit of PS3 bias creeping into KVO's reviews, maybe he really likes his Slim, which I understand I like mine but come on.

That goes both ways though. The issues that caused the PS3 version of Borderlands to score .5 lower than the 360 version were patched the day it released. If there is bias,(I don't think there is.) it shifts regularly. I wouldn't read too much into it.

I thought that the stuff listed in the review was fixed, I hadn't forgotten about your issues, and for whatever reason, I thought that those issues were present for some 360 users too.

I have a problem with the Gametrailers.com review of the game. Just like the first game, they spent the entire review complaining about stuff they didnt like, yet at the end they gave it a 9.2.

Shane Satterfield always does this. He gave the first one a high score because it was innovative and unlike anything before it, but it's not innovative anymore, so why the high score?

Also, is it just my laptop or did the gametrailers review had horrible screen tearing? The game looks better than the first, but the V-Sync issues SEEM worse than the first game.

Inferior or not, the PS3 version runs fine. There is occasional pop in, but the framerate is good and I haven't seen hardly any screentearing. I think the differences must be minimal because so far I'd say AC2 is one of the best looking games I've played this gen. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Loving it so far, maybe 4 hours in. All the problems I had with the first one, which I loved, seem to be fixed. And Ezio is such a more fleshed out character, looking like a wonderful game.

I dont know bear,I was under the impression the PS3 version was worse but came across this comparison and they both seem pretty close to each other.I think I just assumed it was worse so this is a pleasant surprise.

From what I've experienced already, the 360 version has a lot of screen tearing. Nothing really major, but it is noticeable.

Here's something interesting. Did any of you notice another "achievement" pop-up as you progressed through Assassin's Creed 2? Well, AC2 is the first game being used for Ubisoft's Uplay rewards program.

Uplay

awards

Basically, just like achievement points, you earn points by accomplishing certain actions (4 in total) in the game. You can use those points to spend on certain rewards like dashboard themes or UNLOCKING content that can only be done through the program. Or you can save the points for future Ubisoft games.

Some interesting rewards that you can spend on AC2 includes:

- Altair Costume

- Important Family Crypt

- Knife Belt Upgrade

You can easily just register in the game's main menu.

The problem that Kotaku pointed out is that Ubisoft is withholding content, but it's not you're being charged for anything. The program is pretty much free.

In my opinion, it seems okay. I'm not really into the idea of registering/logging in another site to unlock content when it can just easily be unlocked in-game. Of course you can go in and out through the games' menu and with upcoming features, this could be something good. Probably.

EDIT: It seems like the in-game content can be unlocked without the use of the rewards program. That, or the reward descriptions are very similar to what can be unlocked regularly.

What....the....

So I found one of the glyphs found in eagle vision and so:
I got 16's voice about how it's all a lie... Was he tricked by Abstergo? Or the Assassins? And next I was given a puzzle where the obvious pattern was that each painting had a person holding an apple. And then the weirdest **** happened. A super short clip of a naked man and woman running. I'd say Adam and Eve (fits with the whole Piece of Eden artifact), but the surroundings are more contemporary. Whaaaa
Damn it, stop going all J.J. Abrams on me >__>

I played it for about six hours straight yesteday and I hardly ever do that. They have eliminated my complaints about the first game completely. You don't hear the same dialog repeated over and over as you run through the cities, the missions haven't repeated themselves and on top of fixing stuff, the new things in the game are great. I'm loving hunting down those glyphs. I spent a lot of time just upgrading my Tuscan Villa and exploring it yesterday. It is surprisingly large. My only complaint is that unless you turn off most of the HUD, it sorta feels like the game is in constant tutorial mode. Oh and exploring the catacombs and churches is great!

Leo and Haterade touched on this, but the story progression and character development are miles beyond what they did in the first game. When I played the original, I enjoyed it, but I mostly just played it thinking that the sequel would be so much better now that they've got a framework to build off of, and I was right. Everything I liked about the first is done better here, and everything I didn't like is gone.

Sweet! You are in for a treat. I've been very impressed with the game so far. I forgot to mention earlier how much I like the day and night cycle. The night time lighting is gorgeous. So few games really seem to pull that off well, but AC2 manages to fake moonlight very well.

i admit there there is probably no one more skeptical of this game than me. however, the gs review made me turn a corner. yeah, the combat is still two-hands-behind-your-back-blindfolded easy, but supposedly the notoriety system makes atleast a little bit of insentive (inconvenience  ) to not just slaughter everything in town and then go to work every time. probably even bigger is that it sounds like some thought and care went into the mission design this time around. other smaller things came into play, but those two were the biggest. i have some other games to play, but i may yet buy this game some time down the road.

Hello, well, I just started playing this game since yesterday and I'm liking what I see. I've yet to get to the parts thst really matter the most, but when I do, I know that I'll be in for a major treat. It plays exactly like the original, but bigger, better, and a lot more to do. I can't wait to see what the game has in store for me! I'll let you know more of my impressions as soon as I can get better days with it. :)
