Most of the people on here like video gaming. a LOT. but when does it become more than just a hobby, but instead become an addiction you can't walk away from?

thats some interesting stuff. i really do wonder how many of us gamers are addicted and we just don't realize it...i mean there's an obvious difference between playing games a whole lot and being physically addicted, but its tough to identify.Gamespot had an article on addiction a few years back, makes interesting reading.

yeah, i've seen similar things. its truly horrible that some people get to that extent. if i ever get to where i realize my gaming is completely taking over my life, even a little bit, i'm quitting completely. or maybe just get a wii :P(joking)I read a tragic case where a South Korean couple had starved their baby to death by playing an online virtual reality 'game' in an Internet Cafe leaving the poor kid at home, quite sad.

I've written several college papers on video game addiction and received A's. (not bragging, only did good because the subject interested me and I use to be a video game addict) Can be just as dangerous as any other addiction such as alcohol, gambling or drugs, b/c of job loss, unhealthy, depression. But clearly the number of deaths caused by VG addiction is nowhere near the numbers of other addictions. Obvously MMO's tend to suck the most life away from gamers because they game never seems to end. Close friends and family are the first to be affected and it is connected with "Control Theory" from sociology. Pretty much if the individual doesn't have any hobbies, or a job, or friends, (or lost them all) they therefore have an extended amount of free time to be filled with game time/the deviant behavior.
I'm sorry,what?
I've been playing Pokemon SoulSilver the past 3 days and didn't see what you're talking about.

DUDE! My girlfriend and I were talking about kids the other day and we've decided to at least one of them after one of the characters from Nier HAHA!
When you can't take yourself away from them, even when you try. Or, if it's all you're thinking about, and play every single chance you get (including when you should be doing something else).
It's tough to say when gaming becomes an addiction, because there are two sides to being addicted to something. 1. The emotional addiction, meaning whatever you are addicted to feels like a part of your life that you will never be able to go without, and 2. The physical addiction, which is the actual dependence one's body has developed for whatever it is that they are addicted to (this is the part that leads to withdrawl). The problem in determining addiction in gaming, is it is very hard for ones body to become physically addicted to gaming. Unlike drugs and alcohol, gaming does not put any chemicals into the body that can the body can come to rely on, so it is up to the emotional part of gaming to extend to the point where it is also having physical detriments. This is similar to situations in which people become addicted to gambling.

The MMO's. When you start shrugging off real life oppurtinities and commitments you have a serious problem. Particularly the ones that use the system of TSP = Winning.
I was at a bar a few months ago and a guy was telling me how his wife was a b word and they were getting divorced. Always **** about him playing WoW.
He even had a young daughter....
I looked at him and said "Stop playing WoW dude". WTF? Is it that hard to figure out?
"Well I enjoy it and I only really play when she goes to sleep"
I said yah, you mean when she goes to sleep sad, alone and ignored because you would rather spend time with that game"
That guy was truely addicted.
