I apologize for posting this here, but I'm trying to post my problem everywhere I can. If someone could move this to the right forum I'de appreciate it:

I'm running an HP Pavilon Home Media Center XP edition
2 gigs RAM, dual 3ghz processor, GeForce 7300LE graphics (128mb) and Realtek HD card (built into the motherboard)

I'm an avid gamer, frequently using Voicechat programs. After a few in-game feedback complaints I did a couple voice checks w/ my mic in windows audio recorder.

Somehow when my computer plays music or any other sort of audio, the music is also played through the microphone. For example, I have my gaming headset on, and I'm playing some music through windows media player, at the same time I talk on my mic and record it using windows audio recorder. On the recorded .wav file you can clearly hear the music as well as my talking. This ends up being a huge problem if I'm talking while someone else is talking in-game, causing horrendous feedback.

And I can not find the source of this problem. I've posted on multiple boards, from PCworld forums to the ddo forums. Just yesterday I uninstalled all my audio codecs and drivers, but the problem persists.

I don't know when this problem arose - as someone only recently pointed out the problem to me in-game.
heres a picture of my audio settings:

Double click the taskbar speaker icon, Options>Properties>Recording> and check "Stereo Mix", hit ok, then mute Stereo mix all the way on the right

Mystery closed.
