I play a lot of Fighting games (on fightsticks though) and other action games, but I don't think I've had a controller break on me.
@alim298:
I don't know considering I got my ps3 controllers at the same time and they are now just acting up.
I was bad with my first PS3 controller as I still had the habit of smashing it on the floor. I think I finally decided to replace it about a year later, if that. I quickly broke my habit of destroying controllers for the most part with my second controller. But I still bought a back up controller later on just in case. I screwed up my second controller by trying to remove something that was rattling inside, though the controller itself had minimal damage. So my back up controller became my only usable controller, and it's the one I use to this day. It's holding up well after the roughly 3 years I've had. And it's one of those cool looking silver ones, so I wouldn't dare break it or open it up like an idiot.
That's 5 years and I'm on my third controller, so that comes to an average of 20 months per controller, although I don't anticipate on my current one becoming unusable anytime soon.
I have had my 360 controllers and ps3 since i bought the console. The 360 controllers are 3 years old i think and my ps3 controllers are 2 years old
My PS3 controller is going on 5 years now.
The sticks are crazy loose, it shows some definite wear, and it doesn't hold a charge quite as good as it used to. I've spilled water on it twice and have had to take it completely apart one of those times.
Still works great.
Huh you know I've never really even thought about this before, mainly because I've never had a controller break, or stop working(aside from my ps3 controller on PC, but that was a driver issue that I fixed 5 minutes after it happened). Maybe I've just been extremely lucky, but I've also never been one to throw controllers or anything, and I've always taken pretty good care of them.
PS: I play a lot of games really probably too many games, also I don't actually own a lot of consoles that I used to. I still have my PS2, GC, but really those are the oldest consoles I have anymore(controllers still work great).
It really depends on how well you take care of them. As a child, myself and the people Id play games with would go to town on the controllers--no abuse them, but the controller was simply a means to do an action in a given game, and that was it. But back in that time there was quick fixes like taking the pad apart and swabbing it with qtips and alcohol, as those were the problems that would come up--sweat seeped into the buttons i guess.
To this day I have perfectly working gamecube, ps2, xbox, ps3, 360, and believe it or not, an n64 controller. I'd throw a Dreamcast pad in that list, but it just develops these creeks on the l/r buttons which sound aggravating. I'd also add that, while I generally prefer the xbox analog sticks over the dualshocks, I feel that the dualshocks never wear out.
As for battery? I still have my original ps3 controller from 2009. All my wireless 360 pads are dead, but I dont mind as I have a wired one, and a AA charger.

Hmm, i still have my org Xbox, my org xbox360 controller and org. ps2, ps3 controller and its not because i dont use them, i just dont break stuff ;)
I've had my ps3 controllers since the ps3 launched. And they both work pretty well apart from the right analogue on one is abit dodgy, sometimes the r3 (click) doesn't work.
I've had some pretty bad luck with controllers this past gen. My first PS3 controller (back in 2008) broke down in about 3 months; the spring for the R2 button somehow broke. I've gone through two 360 controllers with both having the left bumper going out.
This is all from 'normal' use as well as I don't throw my controllers around.
