so which is better?

IMO silent hill is better...the lighting is disturbing and just gives you the creeps for the whole game.

I like the Resident Evil series better, as it has a better story to it.

Silent Hill story and character wise and even gameplay wise (1-4). Can't say either series is scary though.

I'm guessing the people that are saying Resident Evil is better have only played RE4 and 5. 1-3 are basically garbage. Terrible translations, awful story/plot twists....They just aren't any good. Even for their time, they were sub-par. Silent hill destroys RE in the horror survival genre, as Resident Evil could hardly be called horror survival anymore. It's action.

I thought this was between the first games in each series before reading the first post. Oops. Anyways, I voted Resident Evil. I think it has 4 strong entries to the series, wheras Silent Hill really only has 2. I'm definately against RedDraco66's opinion too. Resident Evil 1 and 2 are both classics, even with the poor story lines. The plot has this B-movie like feel to it, much like the Dawn of the Dead series, and were generally scary and chalenging for their time. Most Resident Evil fans consider either of those two games better than either Resident Evil 4 or 5. Personally I prefer Resident Evil 4, but I think 1 & 2 are both better than 5.

The old Resident Evil games, up to Resident Evil 4 were practically survival horror games that were creepy and gave you chills. However Silent Hill is just downright disturbing and creepy so overall, despite I enjoy the Resident Evil franchise more, I'd say Silent Hill wins.

You do know the stories were written like that right. They were design to have B-rated movie plot's and characters. Also 1-3 destory RE4 and 5. I do agree with you on one thing though the SH series is the better series.

Resident Evil had a good amount of action and jumpy moments. The third by far was my favorite for the Nemesis factor. But the series overall was not that scary.

Even Fatal Frame was scarier than Resident evil in my opinion.

Silent Hill takes the genre up a notch by captivating the players with it's surreal enviroments and chilling effects. Add some pretty disturbing scenes, wierd scenarios/characters and you got yourself a pretty good horror game..

Fatal Frame 2 > Both. Well I liked Silent Hill 1's atmosphere and camera and such. But still.

Silent Hill has the psychological horror which Resident Evil fails on. That's what makes a horror game to its name. Resident Evil doesn't have that horror feel. From playing the remakes on GC, it's more an action zombie jump out of the closet game compared to how Silent Hill messes with your mind in horror.

Probably SH, although Resident Evil 1 was a masterpiece- 2 and 3 were decent and 4 and 5 aren't even survival horror games. I will always regret not playing SH1 when it came out. The graphics didn't stand up to time as well as RE1's prerendered graphics :(

Silent Hill has the best story lines and it's creepy, only a few moments from all 5 can be described as scary. Fatal Frame has more scary moments i would say and Resident Evil is more entertaining and makes you nervous ... definitely not creepy or scary.

Silent Hill 2 (It's the only one I've played and beaten) is a game that's genuinely creepy. The story is wonderful and the survival horror gameplay (which I usually find boring) is fairly well done. And all around the storytelling is brilliant and that makes it one of the shining spots in the genre and video games as a whole.

Resident Evil is usually found more enjoyable because I think some people find it more interesting and fun. Instead of being dark and disturbing, RE is focused more on quick thrills, icky monsters, and cheesy dialogue. This gives it a B-horror movie sort of feel. Something you could play and enjoy by yourself or with friends.

In terms of horror, Silent Hill 2 is Jacobs Ladder, while Resident Evil is more like Evil Dead or Drag Me To Hell.
