SPOLIER ALERT

Anyway, before I got into this series, MGS2 sounded like the black sheep of the series based on a vocal group of people. I'm not seeing it. Is it because Raiden replaced Solid Snake, because the last game was orchestrated by a sercet society, because it ends on a cliffhangar? I loved every second of this game, and really can't see any serious gripe to put this on the level of say...Chrono Cross (which was still a good game, but much more screwy to fans of the first game than MGS2 is.)

MGS2 is my favourite as well but I dont think the game gets as much hate as you say it does. It's just heavily critisied because of raiden.

It's where the story took a nose dive into "convoluted" territory.

I enjoyed it, but the reason why it's my least favorite is because Raiden was such a winey ***** and that the story just got too frickin weird at the end, even for MGS standards.

I really enjoyed MGS2 as well. It may rank low in my top MGS games but it was still a great game in general. I didn't mind playing most of the game as Raiden as it allowed for some very cool moments for Snake to jump into the game via cutscenes and such. I just didn't care for most of the whiney banter between Raiden and Rose nor did I care at all for Otacon's sob-infested backstory. The ending also became too convoluted for it's own good.

I don't think I've ever heard MGS2 get any hate, I actually think I hear more praise for MGS2 and MGS3 than any of the others in the series.

The whole thing ended on an anti-climax after Kojima kept saying that it would be his last Metal Gear game (10 years later he's made several more), the constant claim was that it would take place in New York, yet the only time you were actually in the city was the final battle (with about 75% of the game spent in that off-shore plant that IMO is one of the worst settings ever in to put most of a game in), and there was too much time spent talking through on the green screen (watching cutscenes would have been a better option, the over-use of Codec was due to its rushed development). Also, while the Metal Gear games tend to have complicated stories, this one was complicated for the sake of being so, rather than actually adding anything to the real story. Evidence of this will be seen in MGS3 and MGS4, where they backpedal away from several of the so-called revelations of MGS2 to reveal the real truth of the matter. MGS2 is an important game, and one of the first truly postmodern game experiences, but it being so pretentious is why it ranks as my least favorite canonical Metal Gear game besides Portable Ops. I'd rather play the MSX games than slog through that last part of MGS2 again.

For me, it was because I only got to play as Snake for less than half the game. Also, the game just got way too weird at the end.

I felt cheated by the marketing campaign that showed Snake as the playable character in all the boss fights Raiden ends up fighting. They also had multiple scenes that were completely cut off from the final game. There was a Snake vs Harrier boss fight on the George Washington bridge that we never saw in the game. There was a scene in the Tanker chapter where Snake is getting ready to fight Metal Gear Ray at the top of the Tanker but that never happens in the game either.

Other than that, the hours and hours of codec calls, especially with Rose grew tiresome very quickly. I kept waiting for Snake to become the protagonist again but that never happened. When the ending came, i felt shortchanged. I couldnt believe the game was over. It was horribly paced, and the twist that the Patriots were A.I was delivered terribly in an hour long codec in the middle of a two hour long cutscene.

I enjoyed the game a lot more on subsequent playthroughs. It's a fantastic game actually with some pretty unique story missions and stellar level design. It's also got the most hidden easter eggs ever in a video game and they are all hilarious.

I never thought I'd see the day you'd criticise a MGS game If I remember correctly they also released a MGS2 demo with Zone of the Enders and the playable character was Snake, so they really played a dirty trick by shoving Raiden down our throats. He's not a bad character, but after we got in our minds we'd be using Snake the whole game... well, any character they could throw at us in his place would have been a disappointment

It was poorly written, the level design sucked, and like it has already been pointed out, way too much green screen time. I think of MGS2 whenever I'm reminded of Kojima's ironic comments about Crysis' plot.

The last boss fight was exciting however. Other than that, the rest of the game is completely unnecessary.

The story basically. It goes crazy and convoluted near the end, and the storytelling is awful - most of the cutscenes/dialogue are delivered through codec. I thought the gameplay was solid however.

I didn't like MGS2 for the simple fact that there was too many cinematics and dialogue to sort through. I enjoyed it mainly for what gameplay I could find and there was a lot, but it just felt like I was watching a movie and not playing a videogame whatsoever.

I also beat MGS2 a few months ago for the first time, and was a great experience, its a great game.

But i strongly disliked the fact that most of the action takes place in that off-shore plant. One of the worst environments ever.. , and the back tracking was just bad.

I think alot of the hate was a knee-jerk reaction to Raiden. I think MGS2 in the second best MGS behind MGS3.

If people want good fleshed out stories, go read a book or play an RPG. People seem to complain that every game has a bad story. We're talking about mgs here, the game that uses 30 minute cutscenes to tell you stories that don't make any sense in the first place. I liked the little kickback they did to the MSX MG game (although it had to take place during raiden's naked part) and the boss fight at the end was one of my favorites. Actually, the whole entire thing after raiden got his clothes back (cutscenes included) were some of the best things I've watched/played in a game.

It was the beginning of the end for the series, the kernel of runaway LAME cells that eventually metastasized into the cancer MGS4 turned into. Bear in mind that I'm speaking of the story; the mechanics and gameplay were fine.

I thought that game was terrible.

Right from the beginning, you're working to expose the US military for making metal gears - something that every other nation on the planet is doing. Huh? Are we supposed to want the US military to be at a huge military disadvantage to the rest of the world? Is that the goal we're supposed to want to work towards? Then the terrorists have got the ship booby-trapped so if you walk down a hallway, you may set off explosives that sink the entire ship. Huh? The terrorists set this up knowing that there would be a very large number of them on board, and if any random guy happened to walk down a hall, they'd all die?

So after making it through the first part of the game, we get to the second part, and NOW we get a tutorial on how to use the controls? WTF - I've been playing this for over an hour already.

All the environments on the facility were very similar, you were basically just doing the same junk over and over again, even backtracking through the same exact areas but being able to go through another door because now you've got some keycard or something. The boss fights were just dumb - throwing claymore mines at some rollerskating idiot, and having to hit him with over a dozen of them before you win...whatever

Don't even get me started on that girl who was always wanting to talk about your relationship with you over the radio - while I'm kind of busy trying to save the world here. And then what, you're girlfriend was actually a hologram, and you never noticed that before? I mean, huh? And all the endless talk about how you won't let her in your bedroom or some such rubbish. I was seriously tossing my controller on the bed and just sitting back and laughing at how utterly ludicrous it all was.

Then there's the girl you meet, who promptly pees her pants, then the hero pees his pants when he's being interrogated. Is this a bit of a fetish with the developer or something?

The gameplay throughout was extremely mediocre, the characters were beyond laughable, the environments were boring and ordinary.

An absolutely TERRIBLE game.

People were upset that Solid Snake was the controllable protagonist. Ironically, all of them didn't realize that he was still the focus of the story, and Raiden was just a way to let the player see what Snake was like from a different perspective. I loved the game. I'm more reluctant to play 4 from what I've been hearing about it "ruining" the franchise.

Aside from playing as Raiden it also had a ridiculous storyline. There was no need to introduce the Patriots and I think the whole series would have been a lot better off if they were never introduced. The Big Shell was also a bland compared to Shadow Moses and the Tanker. Playing after MGS4 makes it even worse since it retcons a certain character.

Almost no one hated it, it's just that someone said oh Raiden sucks, then everyone tried to fit in. I started replaying MGS2 the very same night I finished it. The game was fun and it looked amazing, even today.

I enjoyed playing as Raiden. I thought it was cool to be playing as a rookie and seeing the game through his eyes rather than playingas the generic 'bad-ass, highly experienced hero' like nearly every other game. Don't get me wrong, I definately prefer Snake, of course, but I still found it to be a very interesting tobe playing the game from a different point of view.

MGS2 was the first game of the series I played, and I enjoyed it so much I went back to play 1. People who played 1 first are just butt hurt that they got Raiden shoved down their throats. Other than that, MGS2 was a solid game. You gotta give the devs respect for trying something a little different.

Playing as a different character is one thing, but going from the awesome Snake to the douchey little Raiden is pretty dumb.

Maybe if the person who replaced Snake was actually cool it wouldn't have been half as bad.

It's a good game, the only hate I hear about it is playing as Raiden. Don't see what's so wrong with that. Yeah obviously Snake is more badass but who cares Raiden turned out to be a big, badass character too (see: MGS4 and last boss fight in MGS2)

I thought Raiden was pretty badass in the game, people only thought he sucked because they were comparing him to Snakes personality which really didn't work out, and Snake wasn't absent from the game so all was good.

I dunno why there's hate either i consider it my favourite MGS a lot of the time

You know, while several wrote the game off because of Raiden, it's annoying to generalize and say that people don't like the game simply because of Raiden. He wasn't my problem with the game at all.

Saying Raiden is the only reason for people to not like MGS2 is like saying that the only reason people may not like Zelda: Wind Waker is due to the cel shading, or not liking Final Fantasy XIII simply because of it having characters that have a Japanese asthetic to them. Don't be so dismissive of other people's feelings, especially when they take the time to explain them. :|

This post contains spoilers for MGS1 and 2.

Its worth remembering that the excellent demo was completely misleading. The demo was filled with brillitant, interactive bits (you could shoot a glass filled with ice and then watch the ice melt, you could stand up in front of a projector durimg a big meeting and your image would be thrown into relief onscreen, you could shoot the ties of a billowing tarp which was partially obscuring your vision in order to allow the wind to rip it away and get it out of your way, you could shoot the leaves off plants...) that were contained in the first hour or so of the game, but which were entirely absent from the majority of the game, which featured one crawling through a bland environment with few interactive elements.

Also, the bosses were weak and the end sequence of boss fights was really disappointing (there were a paltry two fights at the end of MGS2, at the end of MGS1, 3 and 4 there were several boss fights and chase sequences). Not only was the sequence unusually short, but the two pieces which composed it were lackluster (I didn't know that each of the pack of Metal Gears Idefeated at the end were each versions of the super Metal Gear the game had been building up, because each one was so each to knock off).

Also, the plot is weaker. The fact that one couldn't save Hal's sister kind of robbed that situation of tragedy (we're set aside the fact she wasn't an interesting character). The (non-canon) death of Meryl in MGS1 was a better done because if one did better (at the torture scene) one could save her.
