It's practically indisputable for me, it has to be Super Mario Bros.

Agreed. Anyone who doesn't say SMB is crazy. It practically started a new era. SMB is the epiphany of video game legacy. If any game is deserving of the title greatest 8-bit game, it's SMB.
I'll go with a 3-way tie - Contra (beat it again 2 days ago), Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! (not the gimped Mr. Dream version) & Super Mario Bros. 3 (would have been my pick if so many others hadnt picked it already)
Honorable Mention: Super Mario Bros., RC Pro-Am, The Legend of Zelda, Blades of Steel

8-bit?
I'll have to go with SMB3.
Technically, Game Boy and Game Boy Color were both 8-bit. Now that its open for discussion, I'll say Super Mario Land 2.
you know there were a ton of great 8 bit games. just a TON, final fantasy, the castlevania series, the megaman series. but honestly the only game in history to exceed the hype created for it was
Super Mario Bros 3
This is the game an entire generation waited on, i said in another thread this is the game the world stood still for and i still believe it to be true. Nothing has come close to being as anticipated as this game (and theres a good chance no game ever will) halo 3, oh yeah, sure people wanted it, it was hyped like crazy, had its own brand of mountain dew at 7-11, big deal..... Super Mario Bros 3 had a movie theater (not straight to video) movie starring Fred Savage called "The Wizard" that everybody and their dogs (although many will deny it) went to see just so they could see 90 seconds of SMB 3 footage. No game compares to that.
Pokemon Silver.

Despite its graphics, Pokemon Gold and Silver where 16-bit games. My all time favorite would be Super Mario Bros 3.

They were Gameboy compatible so that would make them 8-Bit, would it not?
smb3 obviously........ cant believe no one has mentioned streets of rage yet! QUALITY ALERT!!!drgoth2006
Only if it's the second one.
How the hell is SMB3 an 8-bit game??? I thought all SNES games were 16 or 32 bit? Anyways as fun as zelda and mario were I think the game that I would most like to play repeatedly on my NES is Ultima: Quest of the avatar. I never even came close to finishing that game. _AbBaNdOn
Really, man? Really?

streets of rage was on genesis, 16 bit, thats why nobody mentioned it. besides smb3 > streets of rage ANY day of existence.
Was also on the master system which was 8-bit
The best 8-bit game I've played is Kirby's Adventure.VGobbsesser
Too bad it came out so late in the console's life.
