Atmosphere can make it or break it in a videogame, but some games do it soo well. I think Silent Hill 2 has the best atmosphere in a game, with the combination of spooky settings, and bone-chilling music, it really makes the whole horror concept flawless in execution.

Some other games that get my vote are Mass Effect, for the perfect space atmosphere, Metroid Prime, Half Life 2, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Flower, Final Fantasy XII, Animal Crossing, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and Metal Gear Solid.

So what game do you guys think has the best atmosphere?

Metroid Prime (original game)

Resident Evil (GC remake)

Half-Life 2 (PC)

Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (PC)

Tomb Raider (original game on PC with Open GL)

System Shock 2

Diablo (original game thanks to a perfectly tense soundtrack)

Yeah how can I forget about REmake, that game was scary on so many levels! Plus that mansion looked great, I really feel that the series should go back to "the mansion" roots, instead of going hollywood like it is. RE has turned into a great action series, but it shouldn't be that :/ And my problem is only with 5, I thought that 4 was a great evolution of the series, as it managed to be incredibly atmospheric and pretty scary at certain parts. Hell even the island had bone chilling areas, and that was the least frightening part of the game.

metroid prime is what first came to mind. so much is done simply for the sake of immersion. the first person perspective is done so right, with the tv screen acting as samus' visor and all the things that come with it like stream, goop, and technology interfaces. the story never breaks the mood as its woven into a masterfully themed world that gets more corrupted as the player explores. the ambient music does a nice job too.

shadow of the colossus does it admirably too. the world is just so dead, and its only emphasised by the lack of overworld music. this allows the creators to do some really interesting things. first is the building of the relationship between wander and his horse, agro. the fact that he is your only companion in the wilting world naturally makes for camaradery. you may not know it at first, but by a certain scene towards the end youll love that damn horse. the second is the fruit trees. this is certainly no eden, but the trees do require a connection. the biblical motif of forbidden fruit rings true by the end of the game.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. definitely excelled on the atmosphere level. Morrowind did it extremely well also.

There's too many awesome examples. Dead Space, Resident Evil (Remake), Resident Evil 4, Bioshock, Doom 3, F.E.A.R., Half-Life 2. I could keep going.

Bioshock had a rather good gloomy atmosphere. Not to mention Max Payne had plenty of atmosphere that was rather dark and gritty.

Aaaaand I'm gonna have to third that. But I found Etrian Odyssey II to be a surprisingly atmospheric game too.

Personally, I thought HL2 was loaded with Atmosphere, this is the PC version I'm talking about, not sure about consoles.

original Half-Life as well, no question.

Dead Space, mass effect 1&2, FF7, Halo2, Ocarina of Time, Starcraft 1, Diablo 1, and Wow... I put WoW in there as I played the game at the initial release, which at the time I have to admit is was a damn good game. Daily horde raids (when world pvp was the sh1t, first exploring Azeroth for the first time, 40 man raids on dragons ect... made this game epic. After about a year this games magical touch seemed to of disappeared through patches, lame content, ect.. Rest of the games on there however are self explanatory...

Glad to see Dead Space made it on the list a few times, I've never played it but am going to buy it shortly because I heard it was a great environment.

For me, as I've gotten older - most "horror" games have gotten dull with their atmosphere, as my tolerance punched pretty high after playing the first couple Silent Hill and first RE game.

Bioshock did one of the better jobs I think, making me feel the environment and forget for stretches that I was playing a game.

JRPGs because the atmosphere changes on each world/area. If as a whole, my pick is Shadow of the Colossus.

Metroid Prime (and Super Metroid for that matter), Final Fantasy VI was so gloomy in the latter half it almost made me feel real-world loss, Bioshock was a world unto its own, Resident Evil 4 was great for tension, and I would have to echo Morrowind as well.

I think I'd also be remiss if I didn't include the original call of duty. That was able to give me heart palpitations and felt as close to war as I ever wanted to be. remember the first Russian mission? Shudder...

I play a lot games and sorry I can not be comprehensive

GTAIV and the extensions

Dead Space

Biostock 2

Uncharted 2 Among Thieves

Infamous (is it pretty good)

Metal Gear Solid, it could have been better

Assassin's Creed I/II one of the best

Kill zone 2and Call of Duty MW 2 holds the lead in FPS war based games

Batman Arkham Asylum was quite the type that really makes you feel that you r in deep shiiit! quite creep but dazzling if you think about it!

Mass Effect 2 made a great improvement in magnifying an awe inspiring plot that made the atmosphere more extensive "my opinion"

Bioshock has, hands down, the best atmosphere in any game. It's too bad it was attached to such an unspectacular shooter.

While Dead Space does indeed have great atmosphere, it's very 'generic'. Tons of dark hallways and whatnot.
