I posted this topic before but I made some changes because of a great new female character in Violette Summers, the heroine of Velvet Assassin.

Moved out of the top 10

Chun Li (Street Fighter series) - one of the most noticable female characters in the early 1990's and I think out of all the Street Fighter characters, she is one of the most developed ones and a tragic heroine. She even will have a movie (but itis bad).

Top 10

10)Yuna (Final Fantasy X and X-2) - while she is a cliched character, you can't help but like her.

9) Elika (Prince of Persia 2008 ) - wow, the new Prince of Persia game would have not been the same without her. She drives the game, not the new Prince, which I don't like. I like how she outwits the Prince in every witty comment he makes. I just wish that she didn't save the Prince when he falls so I can continue the game with just her.

8 ) Princess Peach (Mario games) - classic character, fun to play as in games which she is playable. Love her in SSB games.

7) Lara Croft (Tomb Raider) - while she is turing into a sex symbol, against her creator's wishes, she is a developed character and an icon in gaming.

6) Princess Farah (Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Warrior Within, and Two Thrones) - wow, what a character...she was a great love interest for the Prince, even when she didn't know him, and she helps the Prince defeat his dark side for good, putting her above his selfishness.

5) Violette Summers (Velvet Assassin) - Actually inspired by a real female spy in WWII Violette Sbazo....but her storyand fate aredifferent, but still heartbreaking....as the war truly hurts her physically and emotionally.

4) Princess Zelda (Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time) - Many different Zeldas, as much as I love the Tetra Zelda from Wind Waker, Ocarina's Zelda is the best. She is not a normal damsel in distress like the other games (the Twilight Princess Zelda is a letdown), she actually guides Link through the journey as Sheik. She even takes a huge hit from the Shadow Temple Boss.

3) Alyx Vance (Half Life 2) - one of the best companions ever in gaming, an uncliched character whos character development is greater than her sexiness. I want Episode Three, its been way too long since Episode Two.

2) Samus Aran (Metroid) - while I wished she was more developed, she is a classic character. I remember playing her with her helmet off in the original Metroid.

1) Final Fantasy VI Lead Characters - Terra Bransford and Celes Chere - wow, I think these are best characters Square has ever produced. These characters break cliches and are some of the most human video game characters ever...and this was the 16 bit era. Terra and Celes were different characters, but they had their similarities as Magitek knights. Terra, at the start of the game, is a slave of the empire who doesn't know who she is and tries to find out what it means to be human. She tries to find what true love really is. In the World of Ruin, she takes a role I haven't seen a main female character take since, a motherly role, caring for orphans who lost their parents due to Kefka. She finds the meaning of true love and hope there in Mobliz and helps defeat Kefka. Celes is the other main character of the game. Unlike Terra, who is trying to find what it means to be human, Celes struggles with her humanity. At first, when rescued by Locke, she is hopeless and battered, an imperial general turned traitor. She then developes feeling for Locke in which they both find strength. She has the most famous scene in FFVI: The Opera. But it is her alone on the Solitary Island (if Cid dies) that is the turning point of FFVI, after her failure to stop Kefka on the Floating Island. One of the few times where a main character in gaming attempts suicide, she jumps off the cliff but survives and finds hope in Locke's bandanna that a bird found. Her finding of hope then spreads to the other characters of the party and they reassemble to beat Kefka. Its her weaknesses and facing them that make her character stronger, not her strengths.

Honorable Mentions: Aeris and Tifa (Final Fantasy VII) Rinoa (Final Fantasy VIII) Jade (Beyond Good and Evil) Ashley Williams (Mass Effect) Faith (Mirror's Edge) Tetra/Zelda (LOZ: Wind Waker) Alex (Eternal Darkness) Marle and Lucca (Chrono Trigger) Elle (Terranigma) Relm (FFVI) April and Zoe (The Longest Journey Series) Dr Tenebaum (Bioshock) Jaina Proudmoore (Warcraft III and WoW)

So what are your fave female characters in gaming????

Terra? ...erm...a sprite for top female character? thats kinda a **** take isn't it? and kinda the opposite why we like girls in our games?...(2D = flat chested lol) I mean sure she actually talks unlike some of them but...a sprite? Surely Samus is the top female character. Why is Yuna 10th? surely female leads would be the top female characters.

Where are Imoen and Nalia?

They're some of the most three-dimensional characters in gaming IMO.

Especially when Imoen and Sarevok talk about her pimples.

And when Nalia is scared of how powerful she's become, and tries to hide her fear through a show of indifference.

This is Terra....there is more artwork of her than just sprites...she is in Dissidia as well (too bad Celes isn't).

Here is Celes

And as characters, they outshine every character in the FF series....even Yuna (who I did like).......they are the lead heroes of the best game (or storyline) in the series.

Samus > all.

Samus is pretty much one of the only major female game characters that isn't treated like an object during the gameplay.

FF characters who get one game, at most 2-3..? I have to give it to FF series for not making them into sex objects *ALL* of the time... *cough* FFX sequal...

Either way, pretty much all metroid games have been AA or AAA which also must count for something. She'd be the female lead who exists in the most quality games.

And yes, Samus' character is well developed, there are many sources that cover her, most notable... comics and the games themselves to name a couple.

The Final Fantasy VI heroines aren't at all sex objects.....far from it. Samus is a great character, no doubt....but the FFVI women are how you make female characters properly...even Square has forgotten that. Samus is not that well developed....she is more developed in the Nintendo Power comic which wasn't canon.

Alyx Vance. She was the only game character that felt like a real person. Whenever something bad happened to her, I was shocked and worried. Not like "Oh, that sucks."

 You mean the game in which the woman strips down to her underwear if you beat the game fast enough? Metroid was a game rich in atmosphere, but the hero was faceless (literally) and devoid of personality.

I think there have been some great female characters in games including but not limited to Heather of Silent Hill 3, Princess Yorda of Ico, Etna of Disgaea, Alis of Phantasy Star, Hana of Fear Effect, Terra of FF6, Riku of FFX, Nariko and Kai of Heavenly Sword and Chie of Persona 4. I'm not saying all of them are feminist icons or anything, but they are all interesting characters.

Cortana. Well, techincally speaking, she's not a "female", but she's nonetheless a very well designed and character, witty, sarcastic, has a great personality, and truly cares about Master Chief and willing to do whatever to help him. Serina in Halo Wars is pretty cool too, has a dark and cold sense of humor.

Chun Li is a good character, but she was #10 on my list until I had to put Violette Summers on the list. Samus is in the 2 spot because of her legacy and fame, but I put the best heroines (Terra and Celes) from a series known for strong heroines (Final Fantasy). Play FFVI and you will see why I put these two at the top.

Yuna is great....I just wish her voice acting was better...doesn't take anything away from her character though. She is my favorite FF heroine after the FFVI mains (Terra and Celes).

Here is also another great picture of Celes Chere, in probably the most famous scene in the FF series...the opera.

This makes me want a FFVI remake.........badly.

April Ryanfrom The Longest Journey and Zoe from Dreamfall are two of my favorites. Of all the confused-kid-becomes-world-saving-hero stories out there these two have the most believable characters.

Jaina Proudmoore from World of Warcraft. There is something about her I really like. Maybe its because sheseems to beone of those greatness thrust upon them characters who has retained enough of herself that she can walk away from all the power she has aquired and not look back.

Kate Walker from Syberia. To say any more would ruin one of my favorite aspects of the game. If anyone is interested in trying out a PC point and click adventure then check out Syberia. It is one of the better ones.

Yuna.

ratchet200

Yeah, she's totally awesome. Though I actually liked her in X better than in X2. She will always be a well-mannered and sweet young girl in my book.
I was totally caught by surprise when she mentioned the word "suck" in one scene. I had to restart my save just to make sure my ears were working normally.
I cannot believe there isn't very many Terra mentions...........another thing that makes Terra great is she does not ever have hatred in her heart, despite all the horrible things Kefka and the Empire do to her. Even in the final confrontation....while most heroes lash out at the villain, she never does with Kefka, a truly hideous evil SOB.. She confronts him with a reasoned argument about the importants of life and love (something Kefka seeks to destroy), where she learned in her motherly role of orphaned children... Then the same game gives you Celes whose journey is extremely profound as well.........from imperial general who is forced to do horrible things, to hopeless traitor, to a true heroine fighting for love as well. Gives Kefka a good stabbing as well. Yuna is great....I like how she loses her faith in religion, but finds faith in love. I do find Terra and Celes slightly better though. Lenna from FFV is an excellent character as well (as well as her sister Faris to a degree). Rinoa is the heart of VIII....and Tifa and Aeris are the only great characters in VII.

My vote would be for April Ryan from The Longest Journey.
