I posted this topic before but I made some changes because of a great new female character in Violette Summers, the heroine of Velvet Assassin.
Moved out of the top 10
Chun Li (Street Fighter series) - one of the most noticable female characters in the early 1990's and I think out of all the Street Fighter characters, she is one of the most developed ones and a tragic heroine. She even will have a movie (but itis bad).
Top 10
10)Yuna (Final Fantasy X and X-2) - while she is a cliched character, you can't help but like her.
9) Elika (Prince of Persia 2008 ) - wow, the new Prince of Persia game would have not been the same without her. She drives the game, not the new Prince, which I don't like. I like how she outwits the Prince in every witty comment he makes. I just wish that she didn't save the Prince when he falls so I can continue the game with just her.
8 ) Princess Peach (Mario games) - classic character, fun to play as in games which she is playable. Love her in SSB games.
7) Lara Croft (Tomb Raider) - while she is turing into a sex symbol, against her creator's wishes, she is a developed character and an icon in gaming.
6) Princess Farah (Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Warrior Within, and Two Thrones) - wow, what a character...she was a great love interest for the Prince, even when she didn't know him, and she helps the Prince defeat his dark side for good, putting her above his selfishness.
5) Violette Summers (Velvet Assassin) - Actually inspired by a real female spy in WWII Violette Sbazo....but her storyand fate aredifferent, but still heartbreaking....as the war truly hurts her physically and emotionally.
4) Princess Zelda (Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time) - Many different Zeldas, as much as I love the Tetra Zelda from Wind Waker, Ocarina's Zelda is the best. She is not a normal damsel in distress like the other games (the Twilight Princess Zelda is a letdown), she actually guides Link through the journey as Sheik. She even takes a huge hit from the Shadow Temple Boss.
3) Alyx Vance (Half Life 2) - one of the best companions ever in gaming, an uncliched character whos character development is greater than her sexiness. I want Episode Three, its been way too long since Episode Two.
2) Samus Aran (Metroid) - while I wished she was more developed, she is a classic character. I remember playing her with her helmet off in the original Metroid.
1) Final Fantasy VI Lead Characters - Terra Bransford and Celes Chere - wow, I think these are best characters Square has ever produced. These characters break cliches and are some of the most human video game characters ever...and this was the 16 bit era. Terra and Celes were different characters, but they had their similarities as Magitek knights. Terra, at the start of the game, is a slave of the empire who doesn't know who she is and tries to find out what it means to be human. She tries to find what true love really is. In the World of Ruin, she takes a role I haven't seen a main female character take since, a motherly role, caring for orphans who lost their parents due to Kefka. She finds the meaning of true love and hope there in Mobliz and helps defeat Kefka. Celes is the other main character of the game. Unlike Terra, who is trying to find what it means to be human, Celes struggles with her humanity. At first, when rescued by Locke, she is hopeless and battered, an imperial general turned traitor. She then developes feeling for Locke in which they both find strength. She has the most famous scene in FFVI: The Opera. But it is her alone on the Solitary Island (if Cid dies) that is the turning point of FFVI, after her failure to stop Kefka on the Floating Island. One of the few times where a main character in gaming attempts suicide, she jumps off the cliff but survives and finds hope in Locke's bandanna that a bird found. Her finding of hope then spreads to the other characters of the party and they reassemble to beat Kefka. Its her weaknesses and facing them that make her character stronger, not her strengths.
Honorable Mentions: Aeris and Tifa (Final Fantasy VII) Rinoa (Final Fantasy VIII) Jade (Beyond Good and Evil) Ashley Williams (Mass Effect) Faith (Mirror's Edge) Tetra/Zelda (LOZ: Wind Waker) Alex (Eternal Darkness) Marle and Lucca (Chrono Trigger) Elle (Terranigma) Relm (FFVI) April and Zoe (The Longest Journey Series) Dr Tenebaum (Bioshock) Jaina Proudmoore (Warcraft III and WoW)
