This is too the small number of gamers still hardcore about the genre,

Honestly i can say am a fighting enthusist to the core, imma a matial artist so in the realm of gaming one of my favorite genres is the fighting genre. Im all over the place with gaming but fighting games are what brought me into the world of being a gamer. of This is the top fighting games of all times hands down and y (from the bottom to the top)...

6.Virtua Fighter - sure it has been bragged as the best fighter i beg to differ and here is y. The system isn't as deep as everyone think it is n its been that way for years (except VF3), the fighting is stiff and u can easy beat opponents with three or four combos ( like gimme combos) if u think that isn't evident try playing online. Plus the low punch thing wtf is up with that, There is a horrible balance wih characters, and favoritism (look at how poor goh moves are, and look at lion, pai, n the old man thats about 70% of xbox live character usage.) Its not a horrible fighter, it great but not enjoyable.

5.Mortal Kombat - first game that allows u to kill opponent enough said

4.Soul Calibur - is one of the very best, its like tekken with swords, the character line up is extremely balance and everyone has a good chance to win with anyone if they practice enough. Althought it has no impact changes on the gaming industry its one of the most popular fighters.

3.DOA series - this game is great because it has great action, deep gameplay and incredible balance amoung all the cast of charcters. its man emphasis is countering and it keeps the combos in check for real stragtical fighting, plus its fighting system closely resmbles the matrix.

2.Tekken series - Revolutionize fighting games one of the best selling fighters of all time, its movie style combat, crazy charcters, storylne, and balance cast of characters (except Jin) this one of the all time greats in the fighting genre.

1. Street fighter - started the craze, it will always remain king...it looks like it is making a comeback also with SFVI

thats the best, u agree, or disagree let me know!

For me, its Street Fighter with MK coming in second. Those other games blend into each other gameplay wise FOR ME and don't stand out enough to get my props in this discussion. SF for life, even though the 1st one sucked monkey balls.

snk vs capcom 2 hands down. massive characters list, the option to select ur "style"/super combo gauges, and merger of the 2 best companies of the genre. enough said. then comes streetfighter alpha 3, streetfighter 3rd strike, guilty gear XX, tekken series, soul calibur series, and the only mortal kombat i liked is mk2 for snes.

GGX2 (to date it is one of the few really good 2d fighters that doesn't look like it belongs on the Playstation).

VF4> The series overhaul from 4 onwards made the game very tactical. VF is also one of the few fighters that is just about slow enough to play whilst thinking. Whereas many other games rely on a developed sense of intuition.

im sorry im not trying to be an a$$ or anything, but the only thing mortal kombat brings to fighting games is blood and violence. The game is not a good fighting game, thats why you never see tournaments for mortal kombat, theres a reason, the game is broken, and super cheap. Mr. boon needs to stop thinking" if i have 60 characters in my game it will be awesome" and needs to start making the fighting game fundametals better.

anyway, the top fighting games, are streetfighter serise, guilty gear serise, tekken serise, virtua fighter serise.

This is so far off-base it's laughable.

Only low-level human players and the AI can be beaten by spamming repetitive chains. You might get beaten by that, but not everyone does.

2P has always been good in Virtua Fighter, but it never dominated. It's a useful tool when you're being pressured and that's about it.

Tell you what, you bring your Lion, Shun, or Pai against my "poor Goh" and we'll see how the balance treats the match. Goh does not suck, he's just what you call an "expert character" that random scrubs can't just pick up and play. He's not without bad matchups (Jeffry and Eileen immediately come to mind), but he has just as many good ones. Do not use low-level, bush-league play as an indicator of what goes on throughout the game.

(Edit: Here are some Goh vs Shun videos to give you some idea. 12)

Go to VFDC, they'll educate you there.

Top series: Street Fighter (rising), Virtua Fighter (holding spot)
Great series: Tekken (rising), Guilty Gear (holding spot), Samurai Shodown (rising)
Good series: Capcom vs SNK (rising), Arcana Heart (rising), The King of Fighters (rising)
Mediocre series: SoulCalibur (dropping but could turn around if SCIV's good), Marvel vs Capcom (holding spot)
Poor series: Mortal Kombat (holding spot), Dead or Alive (fell after a good run)

VF is easily the best. The balance and depth can't be touched.

the game that changed the fighting games was Street Fighter 2. People spent a whole freakin' truck load of quarters every weekend to play this in the arcades because it kicked butt. Lets hope that street fighter 4 won't suck.

well i gotta say my favorite is street fighter. It was always good but alpha 3 stepped it up alot. mortal combat would be my second because the fatalities. I hated tekken with a passion because i rarely go in a match without someone checking the moves of a character.

Next to footie games, for me the fighting genre is easily the most enjoyable.

Let's see:

5) VIRTUA FIGHTER: Just bought it for the 360,... and found it identical to VF4. It wasn't very accessible, and the fighting mechanics just seem,... stiff. Also, everybody harps on about the graphics,... as far as I can see, the DEAD OR ALIVE series have consisitently been more impressive,... DOA4 is light years ahead graphically. Fighting games should be instantly accessible,... this isn't.

4) MORTAL KOMBAT: For pure entertainment, I rate this above the VF series,. yes its a total gimmick, the fighting mechanics are broken & cheap,.. but put a bunch of people in a room and have a tournament, they'll have a laugh with this,... I remember playing MK3 on the PS1,.... we used to have tournaments with all the kids on the street,.... I can't say the same for the VF series.

3) SOUL CALIBUR: I remember the first day I bought SOUL CALIBUR for the DREAMCAST,.... it was the first time since MARIO 64 I had been bowled over,... the fighting mechanics were too good to be true, and the graphics,..... well,.. suffice to say, neither SC2 or 3 have never surpassed the DREMACAST original's visuals,.... they were sumptious. Aother game which was popular with all my mates,.... a real crowd pleaser.

2) STREET FIGHTER: To this day, no other fighter has had such a perfect balance of characters,... and, for me, there is little more satisfying than igniting an haduken into your opponent's face,..... pure gaming bliss. SFII & 3RD STRIKE were masterpieces in gameplay mehanics,... and I imagine SFIV will revolutionise it yet again,.. if it doesn't, well, its perfect anyway.

1) TEKKEN: This is the fighter for me which has consistenly enertained me and brought many of my gaming buddies back again & again for just "one more go." You can say what you like about VF's deep, tactical gameplay,.... but put a bunch of people in front of VIRTUA FIGHTER5 & TEKKEN 5, and ask them which is more fun to play,.... I'm willing to bet the majority would back TEKKEN. Take DARK RESSURECTION on PSN,.... free online play,.... a huge amount of characters to select from,... and a fun fighting system thats accessible,.... as opposed to VF's laggy, unforgiving, stiff gameplay.

Needles-Kane

VF as a series prior to 4:Evolution are far from what I would call balance material. VF3=grapplers dominated (its that simple), VF2= Senbon punches > all. They had no recovery time and because of that another senbon punch can connect straight after and after that another one and so forth. VF1= the amount of damage characters like Jeffry did was insane. With one hit you can kiss a good portion of your health bar good bye.

On topic. To me its KoF. Deep gameplay, best characters, different style of play compared to other fighters. 97 and onwards the only games in the series I would find average or mediocre are 99 and 01. 98' is still hands down the best 2D fighter created.

If it comes to 3D-Fighting it´s Vitua Fighter,of course.Soul Calibur 1 was awesome and the best of it´s kind (Weapon-based Fighting...and hey,it´s the only one since YEARS!).When t comes to 2D Fighting Street Fighter stays on top.I really like KoF and the Series it´s based on and Guilty Gear, but they just don´t reach it.

VF5 is ahead of DOA4 in visuals. Most people agree that DOA4 was a modest step up from its' last generation counterpart. You don't get that wow effect going from playing VF5 > DOA4 after a few hours, you do the other way around.

I'd agree with you on the accessiblity part. From what I heard the tutorial has been taken out and in VF4 that tutorial told you everything you needed to know (most fighting games to this day still don't explain how they work beyond the obvious "this is how you block"). I'm not sure what you mean by stiff exactly, the commands are all seperate so they won't flow into combos for you, you have to do the work. That said, DOA4 isn't at all accessible :? I've not played any other fighting games where the developer threw in the guard button as a joke (no really, if you don't play aggressively you are in trouble)

Fighting games really shouldn't be instantly accessible, there probably isn't much too them if they are, but the developers should still include the tools to help the player learn the ropes instead of expecting them to become fluent in the game without direction.

I always found the button division in Tekken...odd. 4 attack buttons? As oppsed to DOA or VF's 2? Or SC's 3? What the hell? And the division isn't logical either, left arm and right is too small a difference for the player to notice unlike a hard or weak strike. On top of that the moves list doesn't justify the control scheme as the characters average around 70ish moves which is on par for VF that has half the number of buttons. As I mentioned before, the division isn't logical, which makes moving the command lists a feat of memory than so than common sense.

Well, it's the Soul Calibur series for me, it's not just the mechanics, I just have fun with it. Tekken is an old favourite that still holds it's own. Never liked DOA and VF is the series I know I should be playing, but I just can't bring myself to do it.

1. Tekken (Flawless and with the new trailers for Tekken 6 coming out, its gonna stay here for a while) 2. DOA 3. SF (Unique, great characters) 4.Soul Calibur (Great game but controls bug me) 5. Virtua Fighter (Seem to have taken bits and pieces from other games, good but nothing original)
