My favorite Final Fantasy would have to be FFIX. It is a greatly underrated game. When it comes to the most revolutionary game in the series, however, I would have to say Final Fantasy VII takes it. It doesn't matter whether you love the game or hate it, you really can't argue the fact that it brought the genre more to the mainstream audience. The graphics for the time were outstanding and brought the series into the age of 3D. Plus on top of that, I still think it is a great game.
FF III and FF IV are my favs, both are heavily underrated.
As per "don't fix what isn't broken" for XII, if they hadn't changed the game, they'd be BLASTED for not changing the game at all (like most sequals this gen), however, they changed, and were blasted for changing the game, so I dunno, can't win really.
Personally I think FF6,Tactics,9 and FF12 are the best ones. I find FF7 to be a good game but very overrated. As for FFX I find it to be overrated also but it dosen't deserve none of the hype it gets IMO. FFX had be one one of least bestFF titles along with FF:Mystic Quest, FF3 (Japanese original and DS remake), FF5
FFVI by a mile..............nothing comes close (except for maybe Lost Odyssey) to the quality of its characters and its themes. The other FF's just cannot compare, before or after, especially the highly overrated VII. Terra and Celes, the lead characters, are the best characters Square-Enix ever produced and they both show incredible growth and change throughout the story. The main support Locke is well rounded, and the other characters are great as well. Kefka is more than just a villian, he is hate and despair itself, while the two female protagonists represent hope and love. The other Fantasy's just can't match the themes VI had.
(spoilers)
VII-XII, I swear the main characters are basically the same, look at Dissidia's roster. They ran out of ideas, and I even find Lightning to be similar to those heroes from VII through XII. Terra was completely different, she was no action hero with a sword, she was a scared girl who didn't know anything and had to learn from the world. She then becomes something completely uncliched, she takes a motherly role. But in a twist, there is a lead character change and Celes becomes the main during the Floating Island. She is uncliched and could be considered an anti-heroine and one who did not have hope. Then she is put in the most hopeless situation of all, commits the ultimate act of despair, and lives to learn from it. Celes is a main character along with Terra, because it was her and her struggles that led to the fall of Kefka, more than terra.
The other games just don't have the themes (except for maybe IX somewhat) that VI does.........VI asks the question and answers....Why do you yearn live when all things must die?
God I love that game. But I also love X, the whole "sin" thing, all of the plot twists and the cutscenes. I also loved the sphere grid. So it's hard to choose.FFVI by a mile..............nothing comes close (except for maybe Lost Odyssey) to the quality of its characters and its themes. I grew up with VI and the game never gets old, but I may have loved X just as much.. it's hard to decide.
7 was good but over rated
8 is the best FF game IMO
9 was good and under rated
and since then all FF games have been bad IMO

Play FF 6.......wow way too many only mention 7 and on and not the earlier games....play 6 and you'll understand why many say it is the best.IV: I love it.. Had a very classic feel.
VI: Still working on it but so far it has a good story, deep characters, one of the best villains ever, and beautiful sprite art.
VII: Very overrated but still doesn't deserve the hate it gets from naysayers. I loved the music, adventure, and lovable characters. For now I would put it as my favorite.
X: Just bought it but so far I love the refined battle system, sphere grid, and beautiful environments.
Those are all i've played.

VI last, what the hell?????? Here is how I would rank them, I haven't played II, III, or XIVI >>>>>>>>>>>> IV > I > IX (highly underrated) > VIII > V > X > X2 > VII (although I do think its gameplay system is the best, the story is highly overrated and the graphics age poorly)

i've played them all, and i didnt really like any of them other then 8 and 9, i just threw 7 in there because it seems to be the most common for best FF or even BEST RPG ever
Final Fantasy IX. I played this after VII, but damn, IX blew me away with its simple charm and humor. The story was excellent also. I really felt bad about Kuja, it was almost like you could feel his pain and sorrow.
I hate Final Fantasy VI. The one with Locke,Terra and all. The story was lame, and the characters were terrible... People praise this game more than Chrono Trigger. My opinion so don't flame :P
VI's characters were the best...by far. It deserves all the praise it gets. The later FF's characters (inlcuding IX, but the characters in that game were pretty good) pale in comparision. VI's characters are actually moredefined by their weaknesses and sorrows and how they overcame them, then their strength's and badassness. Terra is not the typical main hero.......she has to learn how to be human and the other main hero, Celes, is truly defined by her faults, how she deals with them, and how she rallies the party to defeat Kefka....who is basically despair and hatred in human form. Even Shadow, the "badass" character has flaws. They are far from typical video game heroes and their struggles are more realistic then say....most other JRPG heroes. I do think the original American script is terrible (it ruins Cyan's character), the retranslated Japanese script is much better. Also IX basically borrows "what it means to live" theme from VI at the end.Final Fantasy IX. I played this after VII, but damn, IX blew me away with its simple charm and humor.
