You really like this topic if you have to create the same more than once.
Anyway, your list is horrible. IMO on Pc it's Counter Strike, on consoles Time Splitters 2. Neithe ris on your list. You also lack huge titles like Halo.
@drrollinstein: Halo? no thanks.
@ArchoNils2: Not only influential. And reading the list it's easy to understand why.
My list is for singleplayer fps games
@killered3: Yes, no Halo. what are your favourite FPS games?
Halo would definitely be on the list. Same with Doom 2016.
@drrollinstein: Doom 2016 maybe but not Halo.
There are a ton of fps better than Halo, the level design is boring and made to fit the 2 weapons arsenal the gameplay is boring.
Well Halo is still better than the entire Cod series (it's easy, I know) but it's far to be one of the best ever.
@kruton9000gamer: Well opinions exist for a reason. Any list of top shooters missing Halo CE is probably not a very accurate list though.
@drrollinstein: This image can explain some things. Replace '2010' with 'modern' or 'bad' and '1993' with 'old' or 'good'..... I think you get the point.
@kruton9000gamer:
I've only come across a few fps tries before it and none have interested me as much as Halo CE did. In the SNES era, I played Doom was all, "meh" about it. It was fun shooting demons but it felt like it had no point at the time. I honestly felt like fps games were not for me. And all that changed when I met Halo Combat Evolved.
Halo CE changed the way I saw fps games entirely and opened my eyes to it. It felt so real, shooting, throwing grenades, driving the Warthogs, flying Banshees...I fell in love with the Halo universe! Then after I beat it in Legendary, I decided to go back and play all the fps games I missed out on and gave them a chance. Starting from Doom to Duke Nukem 3D, 007, Perfect Dark, all that shit!
Even as time goes on, Halo still grabs my attention in ways that other fps games don't. It was my 1st fps love and there's just something special about it that I just can't find in any other fps game. The damage balance, the guns, it just feels right.
@killered3: Forgot bioshock. Fantastic game. Definitely deserves a spot.
And I don't understand the Halo hate. Are you just being edgy or have you never played it?
I have not played a ton of FPS games but I really like Turok and Turok 2 on N64
I did play Bioshock and that was fantastic
The old Doom games are the best. I also watched my brother play Doom 2016 and it was amazing. Can't wait to get the game from him to stream on my Twitch.
Goldeneye and Halo CE are two of the fps I would have on the list. Like a few others have said Bioshock is definitely another one that should be up there.
@kruton9000gamer:
Wolfenstein
Doom
Duke Nukem
Rainbow 6
Rogue Spear
Redneck Rampage
Quake
I wouldn't list Halo either. Not surprising you get jumped for it though.
In no order
I think Halo and Half Life are more known for being games that did different stuff, than the best features. Halo despite doing things different didn't really hit its peak (imo) till Halo 2 and that was because of 'multiplayer'. Half Life 2 however was purely its physics, I tried Half Life 2 in 2015 and I just couldn't call it a great game. Halo, I'm a little bias but it's not a series that's done itself any favors outside of multiplayer.
As for your list, even if you do put map design above all else, you can't argue that the actual controls for many of those older games now are to be desired. Hence why I think D00M (2016) and Bioshock (original) are games that I would put on top for Single-player experiences.
D00M2016 and Bio have pretty great map designs, and also more fluid mechanics to back it up; compared to the older games with limitations. The implemented gameplay over the years can't be overlooked. Some of the older tropes in First Person Shooters are best left in the past as well.
With that stated; I've still enjoyed the original D00M games and Duke3D, but I had to look at it as an older game. And even then, at times certain features I take for granted really annoyed me; as they wasn't found in the games. Map design was a great thing for the older gems though, that can't be argued.
In no order what so ever
Bioshock 1
Call of duty 2
Doom
Doom 3 (i personally enjoyed the hell out of Doom 3)
F.E.A.R.
Far Cry
Half Life 2
Halo: CE
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
Metro: 2033 or Last light, they are both excellent
Painkiller: Black Edition
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat
Serious Sam: First and second encounter
In chronological order:
-----
I didn't include STALKER: Call of Pripyat because it behaved more like an RPG to me and had much more inventory micromanagement than typical FPS games. But, yeah. It's one of my favorites.
Single player Bioshock, Half Life 1/2, Red Faction, Medal of Honor (old ones),.... maybe FEAR.
Multiplayer Killzone 2/SF, Americas Army SF

All that image show is that people are willing to go to an extreme to lie and overlook to make their point true. It is just like CNN fake news.
@wiouds: And then you play Medal of honor advanced warfighter....
It's actually true that some franchises have built their own success on this type of level structure.
So, you know, ignore something doesn't mean that it will disappear.

That is almost a perfect example of what Splinter Cell had for a level as far as the 2010 example illustrates.

That whole picture is about ignoring some many element of current FPS and acting like they has disappeared
@wiouds: Enemies that act at the same way? Quick events? Storylines that involves in some way Russia?
Many modern fps have that level structure, maybe some one like it but I'm not

There you go again cherry picking the extremes while ignoring anything good in current FPS. For example they got rid of the horrible maze element to older FPS.
Here is what a shootout from a doom game looks like. The enemies does the same thing and it does not matter which way you enter. No real option that current FPS offer that matter in the shootout. I can live without this in poor staging in the current FPS.
