I want to know what people think is the best game series ever made.

Remember to include:

Name of series.

Reasons why it's the best.

Best game in series.

Call of Duty because it has good graphics, nice gameplay, good story, has good multiplayer and is satisfying. Best of them is (not including CoD 5) CoD UO.

Super Mario Bros/Super Mario series. It's just the most recognizable, even mostly all non-gamers know who Mario is.

The Final Fantasy series would have to be my favourite series ever.

Even though all the games are separate, each game still manages to merge graphics, sound, story and gameplay into one brilliant RPG. My favourite ff out of all them would have to be XII.

the metroid series is my favorite.

the story lines have always been sick by gaming standards, but especially echoes. that story blows my mind.

best game in the series might be Super Metroid though. much as i like the new fps versions, i've still got a soft spot in my heart for side scrolling samus.

I'd say at the moment, its the God Of War series. The cross over to the PSP was fairly solid. Can't wait to see what they make of the 3rd one

The Legend of Zelda is my favorite. It consistently delivers outstanding gameplay that never feels repetitive or old, even while holding true to essentially the same formula established in Zelda 1/OoT (in the 2D and 3D games, respectively). My favorite game in the series is either Majora's Mask or OoT. The one I would actually name as the best series would not be Zelda, though. As I said, there isn't much difference from game to game, as opposed to the Mario platformers, which are always doing something new. I would probably choose either Mario or Half-Life as the best series ever.

Castlevania. Aside from the deplorable iteration on the N64, it has consistently been "Castlevania" ever since it debuted in 1986, despite having a ton of releases. People tend to think Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness are not "as good" as the 2D iterations but they are just being silly. They are as much "Castlevania" as Symphony of the Night or Rondo of Blood. Mind you, they could have been a lot better and had a ton of unrealized potential... but they still were "Castlevania."

Before really getting into Castlevania I probably would have said Metroid but Metroid hasn't been as consistent nor as highly varied as Castlevania. The first Metroid, despite being a fantastic game on the NES, really hasn't aged that well and doesn't really compare to the refined formula that Super did to the series. Metroid II: Return of Samus, although decent, wasn't exactly a shining moment for the series. Super, oh don't get me started on Super, its just glorious. Then the series went into remission for nearly a decade. It came back with Fusion and Prime... both good games, both very much "Metroid" but once "Hunters" (I refuse to actually refer to it as Metroid) and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption hit, the series has taken somewhat of a nose-dive. Granted, Prime 3 was a great game and added a lot of well-needed narrative to a series that relied far too much on a silent protagonist who was actually given a dialogue in Fusion... but they are moving the series in a direction away from "Metroid" and what Super, Fusion, Zero Mission, Prime and Echoes spent so much time developing. They turned it into just another shooter... while Metroid before that was about exploration and well-timed jumping and maneuvering attacks.

The direction I personally would like to see the Metroid series take would be a Mass Effect-esque RPG-like game that focused on exploration and narrative... and not shooting enemies. What I have enjoyed most about the Metroid series ever since I first played Super back in the early '90's was running around the world's and finding all the little secrets and details about them. I remember I used to spend hours travelling around Maridia with the gravity suit off thinking I was a "diver." Ever since Fusion on the GBA, Samus has been begging for more speaking roles... she is actually a character with some personality who needs development. She is "human" and extremely believable. I just wish Nintendo weren't so stuck up about M-rated games so we could get a proper game to fully expose her character to every extent that it needs. Her parents were brutally murdered by Ridley and she was betrayed by the Federation... nothing says "make an M-rated RPG out of me" more than where the Metroid series has come to.

The Chrono Series. There's only 2 official games in the series (Chrono Trigger & Chrono Cross) but it's my absolute favourite series. There's also Radicial Dreamers for the SNES but it was a text-based game as opposed to being a RPG.

Reasons why it's the best:

  • Best Game Soundtrack's Ever!
  • Best Use of Time Travel I've ever seen. (In any form of media)
  • Depth of Story
  • Memorable Characters
  • Diverse Worlds
  • Colorful Presentation
  • Straight-Up Fun RPG Battle Systems

Best game in series - Chrono Trigger.

Unfortunately, I can only wait and dream that there will be another Chrono game someday.

Legend of Zelda for me. Most Zelda games had a feeling of "epicness" to me, starting out as a simple kid, just walking around your village, and then things start to unfold and before you know it, you embark on a quest all throughout Hyrule to stop evil as the hero of time or winds or whatever. And facing Ganondorf is usually fun and epic, as well, especially when you are batling your way up to him while listening to his eerie organ music like in Ocarina of Time.

Traversing through the dungeons is also an aspect I enjoy. I always love finding the map and compass and the big Key and the special weapon in the dungeon, then facing off against the boss. This is a very nolstalgiac formula that never grows old to me.

My least favorite Zelda was Zelda II on the NES, but even then, it was still alright. Every other Zelda game was at least very good, IMO, and would score at least an 8/10 from me.

It wasn't the thigh-raping gameplay that turned me off from it; it was the AWFUL dungeon design. No FAQ on Earth could get you through those dungeons. Hell, one of them was sadistic enough to limit your view. One common trait among really bad games: going dark for no f'ing reason.

And then there's the boss battle system, where you MUST be this level to ri-uh beat the boss. Even then, it's a pain in the ass. Remember the giant praying mantis, and how you couldn't get around the damn shot thing?

I really never found the bosses to be hard, especially the mantis. Dodge the scyths, hit his sides and repeat, pretty simple IMO even if the the controls were insanely stiff. But the level up system was a pain, youd have to level up rediculous amounts of times even after youve been dwelling through a dungeon fora few hours, but hey, thats what made the game a challenge.

Half life series, im not going into major details but basically Half life invented the modern shooter in almost everyway from level design and atmosphere to A.I. and scripting. Total War series, every single game in the series has sucked away hours of my life and they're all so unique that you could easily replay any of them nowadays and still thoroughly enjoy them Elder scrolls series, while that will probably be sniffed upon by the ultra hardcore RPG afficiendo's but seriously no other RPG series has offered more variety, length or epic scale than the Elder scrolls

No, I found the Mantis to be hard. That scythe thing followed you EXACTLY on the Y axis. You couldn't get around the damn thing. I beat him, but it wasn't easy.

Name of series.

Reasons why it's the best.

Best game in series.

tyw45

Neverwinter Nights series.

It has good adaption of DnD3.5 rules. atmosphere, sound - is excellent. variety of RPG elements are available. plenty of spells, weapons, monsters etc. :D

Neverwinter Nights 1 is the best to me.

Football Manager series

The best available soccer management game in industry. Vast database, realistic gameplay, true to the core of the football. focus on the gameplay not on the graphics.

Football Manager 2008 is best till date (played FM09 demo).

Dawn of War series

One of the best RTS game and it features awesome environment + story + gameplay. All 4 games are equally good to me, for the sake of decision my reward goes to DoW - Dark Crusade.

Command n Conquer Series

Another legendary RTS series not to be missed by RTS lovers. Almost all games provides excellent gameplay. red alert, tiberium both will give different but satisfactory gameplay.

Red Alert 2, Tiberium Wars - these 2 games are best of the series.

I have omitted various series like, company of heroes, warcraft (I played only WC3).

Gradius. It defined side-scrolling shooters.

Metroid. It defined side-scrolling exploration-based platforming, later adopted by the Castlevania series when Metroid went M.I.A.

Street Fighter. It defined 2D fighting games.

Dodonpachi. The series has defined "bullet-hell"/ "curtain fire" shooters.

Ok, I can't decide between 'Jak and Daxter' and 'Sid Meier's Civilization', so I would answer the topic for both series.

Jak and Daxter:

REASONS: great stories, varied gameplay, great graphics for its time and system, great voice acting; great action, adenture, platforming and arcade racing; vivid, open worlds;wide array of secrets (exclude the 1st game).

SINGLE BEST TITLE: Jak 3 (slightly surpassing both Jak II and Jak X)

Civilization:

REASONS: Great turn-based strategy, customizable world domination, the best historic strategy game yet, has improved over time, great online multiplayer options, great variety of content.

SINGLE BEST TITLE: Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword
