I played my GBA:SP so much that I went through 2 batteries and around a third of the pixels on the screen were stuck or dead before I bought myself a DS. GBA: SP = Greatest handheld of all time.
For me its a tie between:
GBA SP for its clamshell design and its backlight
The original GBA just for the way it felt in your hands, its just so much more comfortable to hold than the SP
Handheld Console is an oxymoron.
A handheld system is a portable system you can hold in your hands. (Gameboy (family), Game.com, Atari Lynx, Game Gear, DS (family), PSP (Family), Wonderswan, Neo Geo Pocket/Color, etc.)
A console system is named for the fact that the first home video game systems had to be connected to a television "console". (NES, SNES, Genesis, PlayStation, Xbox, N64, etc.)
This is why there should be a distinction between the two. With that said, there are 2 first-party "portable" console game systems I can think of in the TurboExpress - which played TurboGraphix 16 games, and the Sega Nomad - which played Sega Genesis cartridges. The Game Gear - by a stretch - could be called a portable console because there was an option to play Sega Master System games on it.
With all that said, the most popular legacy platform handheld system would probably be the original GameBoy, GameBoy Pocket, or the GameBoy Color. With the Atari Lynx, and the aforementioned Game Gear being the closest competition for that market.

Game Console = Computer dedicated to playing games, or something like that?
Either way im pretty sure its always been "Home Console" for SNES', PS1 etc, and "Handheld Console" for Game Boy's, Lynx, GameGear's etc
My choice would probably be the GBA, the system has basically all the SNES' strengths mixed with all the Genesis' strengths, with great 2D graphics too.
The Legacy forums probably isn't the best place for this, man. :?nintendo-naut
LOL^^^^
ide have to say game boy advance
Definetly the GBA-SP. There's no doubt that it's the best of all the Gameboys, as it plays Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Color, and Gameboy Classic (with the Gameboy Color enhancemnets)Games. And no doubt the GBA-SP is superior to the original GBA, because it has longer battery life & the backit screen option, plus it's being smaller& sleeker. So let's see: Large game library, check. Long-Battery life, check. Rechargabe, check. Small & sleek, check. Backwards compatibility, check. Not counting the DS & PSP, it also has the most impressive graphics to boot.
Although the Sega Nomad is pretty freaking sweet, but a HUGE downside to it is it's price and how rare it is to find.
