Saw one on craigslist and was thinking about getting it. I have never played one before. What games should I get for it?? Looks like all the descent games are expensive. On amazon panzer dragoon saga is $289 used. Must be a super sweet game.

good list though .

though frankly I do find it funny when anybody states (as was done in this thread) that all decent Saturn games are expensive, one can get a very good collection for a decent price.

that said, I will admit that right now I have around 90 (I need to count them again) Saturn games , and its getting difficult to find games Id actually want to play for cheap (say , under £10-15), there are still plenty of good games, but youre getting into things like shmups which can get pretty expensive , or games I don't care for like Fifa96.

I don't think Wipeout XL / 2097 is on the list , neither is Dead or Alive (Unless I missed them) , or Go Go Goal (a very good 5th gen football game imo , if a bit basic) there are a few I could probably add, but that list should keep most people happy for a while

yes, it was the original console version (basically arcade>Saturn>PS1) , and yes its the best version , its even better in some ways than the Xbox rerelease.

  • Area 51
  • Bug!
  • Darius Gaiden
  • Galactic Attack
  • Guardian Heroes (this one can get pricey)
  • House of the Dead (another pricey one, sadly)
  • Gex
  • Mortal Kombat Trilogy
  • Panzer Dragoon
  • Resident Evil
  • Sega Rally Championship
  • Shinobi Legions
  • Sonic 3D Blast
  • Marvel Super-Heroes
  • Virtua Cop 1 & 2
  • X-Men: Children of the Atom

yeah about 3% of the saturn library are shooters. and you don't like shooters. saturn shooters are great just like on the dreamcast. if you like the genre or not that's something else. there is no true original sonic platform game but I enjoyed sonic jam more than anything.

Obviously, noone knows what they're talking about with Saturn without naming "Astal" which is probably the best 2D side scroller to date. Last Bronx's an excellent 3D fighter.

SFA2 for Saturn is God's 2D fighter. The game is flawless. Graphics are better than the arcade, the sound's excellent....

No. I'm right.

By the way, Saturn has Radiant Silvergun, Galactic Attack, Darius Gaiden and so many others. Galactic attack is by far the best shooter ever made.

Galactic Attack is the best shooter ever made? Nah, lol. It's a good game that I've had since maybe from around 1996, but M.U.S.H.A and the Thunder Force games are better. From what I've played of Radiant Silvergun, maybe it's just me because I don't like shmups that revolve too much around using particular weapons, but I feel it's overrated due to its insane price tag. Darius Gaiden, I'd like to get at one point, because it looks good and it's cheap in comparison to those like DoDonPachi that never made it over to the US. Anyway, the best games on the Saturn are definitely shmups, so I agree with you there.

Oh noooooo...Sat has loads more Shooters than that. The most of any console.

rilpas

TurboGrafx-16 would like to have a word with you...

as much as I love the TG 16, I think the saturn has more and better SHMUPS

Better might be argued, but more no way. TurboGrafx-16 was a shoot-em up factory.

I guess if you go by pure numbers then ya the TG 16 would win, though a lot of them are just "ok" imo

not to say that the TG 16 doesn't have lots of amazing SHMUPS, but... it's also flooded with not so great shmups

imo of course :P

You REALLY need to play Lords of Thunder, then. That is one of the greatest shoot-em ups ever created, such style in that game. Super Star Soldier is fantastic, as well. Aero Blasters. Raiden. R-Type. Sidearms. Blazing Lazers. Dragon Spirit. All of those are great. Space Harrier was released on it, as well. I haven't played the TG16 version myself, so I'm not sure how it compares to the Master System release. But I know the Master System version is a great game for the time.

Clockwork 1 is mediocre , though yes its there. Clockwork 2 is not bad, still not on the level of Sillhouette MIrage for instance, let alone Rayman Bug Ive never played sadly. also Pandemonium if one uses the term "2D" to describe the gameplay instead of just the visuals.

I have played all of the games you mentioned

Super Star Soldier is ok, Soldier blade is MUCH better imo

Lords of Thunder is freaking amazing

Raiden is on almost every console known to men :P even the Jaguar

Blazing Lasers is awesome

Side arms is... "ok"

Dragon Spirit is pretty "meh"

Space harrier is pretty meh, the only versions I like are the true arcade ports and even then they're just barely above "ok"

and the TG 16 of R-type is missing half the level, though it at least kept my favourite levels

don't take this the wrong way, I'm not undermining the TG 16 but like I said, not ever SHMUP for it is a winner

Pandemonium is awesome. Bug! is okay, it's not bad, but can become boring very easily if your mind sets on something else for either a second. And I loved Clockwork Knight and Clockwork Knight II, might have been because I was younger when I played them, but I really can't banish the love I have for those games :P

CK has a unique look, but I kind of found it to be lacking, you could tell it was a very early game.

Bug is fun, I just got it recently. It is a 3D platformer, but it has 2D mentality, if that makes sense. And it's dirt cheap, so if it ends up not being your cup of tea, no big loss.

the saturn has many great platformers, as long as you like 2d platformers.

rilpas

Mind naming some that aren't Astal, Castlevania, or Rayman?

Gex , Earthworm Jim 2 , Sillhouette Mirage

I still need to check out Sillhouette Mirage. I forgot about Earthworm Jim 2 and Gex on Saturn. Earthworm Jim 2 is awesome, never played it on Saturn but I have it on SNES and PC.

if you have the PC version then it's pretty much the same as the saturn from what I remember
