Wish: Okami 2 (Ps4 exclusive) In TGS (Please Sony)
I think Batman Arkham City has set the new bar for action adventures. The content in this game is just staggering. So much to see and do and it's all at such a high level of quality in both world design and gameplay.
Metroid Prime is also a masterpiece in the genre
For Me, its the way the content is executed, thats the real genius. Tomb Raider wishes it was that awesome.I think Batman Arkham City has set the new bar for action adventures. The older Pokemon games (not sure about the newer ones since I stopped playing them after emerald, but all of them up to emerald were constant adventures for me. I'm talking hundreds of hours PER GAME, and still never got as much done as I wanted to) and the Zelda series!
Also, I just recently purchased borderlands 2. Although it is a bit repetative and slightly linear, it doesn't have to be all that linear if you're willing to take some time away from doing missions to go exploring and looting. At first glance, it looked exactly like Borderlands 1 to me -- an exact replica; however, around level 15 or so, I got bored of the missions and decided to stray and see what I could find. I was surprised. Spending hours just running around exploring all the landscape, finding new gear, killing new enemies, chatting with NPC's, and spotting funny little details and easter eggs here and there was more fun than playing through the story and doing side missions :P. So far, the game seems to have far more to offer than the first one. I'd say it's a very well-designed adventure in its own way. To anyone who hasn't played part 2 but has played the first one, don't let first appearances deceive you. Just start digging a tad bit deeper into it, and you'll wind up in something completely different than what you expected. It's also fun to watch a friend, sibling or significant other play the exact same character through single player while you're playing through it. Try comparing the differences in the guns each of you find. I've been comparing mine to my brother's while we've both been playing the commando single player campaign, and we have not managed to match up a single duplicate gun from our backpacks yet (other than the boss drops). The variety is nearly orgasmic.. Am I allowed to use that word on here? >.>
Sorry, a little off topic. Overall point, all the Pokemon adventure games dated up to the Emerald version, every game in the Zelda series, and Borderlands 2 would be my top picks. Don't ask me to choose one out of all of them though, because I would not be able to do it.
I mean real adventure. A game that you can play and continuously find new things and be amazed and entertained. elemein
Can we swap every "adventure" in the title and the OP for "free-roaming"? Because this thread is not about the adventure genre.

Can't "adventure" simply mean adventure, rather than being a technical term or a genre? I'm not trying to be a smart *butt*, but I think (and I could be wrong) they're just asking for the names of some games they can have an adventure on :P. Some people may not consider sitting on their sofa in the living room playing a video game to be very "adventurous", but I'm sure others do. Like myself. x) An adventure is an adventure no matter which way you look at it.[QUOTE="ReddestSkies"]

He's really talking about free-roaming games, and nothing else.
NieR. I think it counts. I rarely replay games, and if I do it's no more than twice. I've played NieR five times.
[QUOTE="Venom_Raptor"]Those games are really a lot more story-telling games rather than adventure games... :/Batman: Arkham City and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Those are action-adventure games. Infact the Uncharted franchise is more of a Third person shooter with platforming and minor puzzles. Thats just how it is.[QUOTE="Venom_Raptor"][QUOTE="elemein"] Those games are really a lot more story-telling games rather than adventure games... :/Lulu_Lulu

I would say that Uncharted 2 is very much a TPS. That's where pretty much all the gameplay is. Platforming has very little input from the player and the puzzles are almost non existent. There is no exploration or adventuring on the part of the player whatsoever

Think of it is Blue and Red, they make purple, you can't see that "in a way is still Blue/Red" thats just reaching. Action-Adventure is very different from adventure, its a whole different animal. Those are action-adventure games. No, they are not. Action adventure is a subgenre of the action genre. Adventure is a completely different genre.
The adventure genre is very broad.

No, it's not. It's just that people (mostly console gamers) haven't got a clue what exactly is the adventure genre because adventure games generally aren't really that common or popular on consoles.

Yep, the genre has been defined ages ago, it is actually one of the first video game genres.
To use a qoute from that link, I believe this is what confuses most people: The video game genre is therefore defined by its gameplay, unlike the literary genre, which is defined by the subject it addresses, the activity of adventure.
A lot of people think that the video game adventure genre is similar to the literary or film adventure genre when, in reality, that is simply not the case.
