Get LeafGreen or FireRed... whichever color appeals to you more. And then if you love it to death and just must have more, get Emerald.

I like Emerald the most because of all the extra stuff it has compared to Ruby/Sapphire.

Emerald is the Pokemon game with the most content on the GBA. It's the most recent, etc.. But "more" doesn't necessarily mean "better." If I were getting a GBA Pokemon game for the first time, I would get LeafGreen (I like the color green better than red, lol). LeafGreen and FireRed are remakes of the two original Pokemon games for Gameboy Color. They are simpler affairs, but I had the most fun with the original games. They had the original batch of Pokemon, whereas the newer games have all these weird, less original, less interesting creatures. For your first Pokemon game, I think one of those two would suffice. I got bored of Emerald halfway through and never did finish it.

I'd say Emerald because it was my favorite gba Pokemon game and to me, it had the most replay value. There's tons of stuff to do in it. If you're looking to have a more retro feel to the good old Red, Blue, and Yellow days, you would definitely like FireRed and/or LeafGreen.

All the great stuff I love about Emerald is after the 1st half of the game. And I didn't like Fire Red as much because I already played the hell out of Blue. A graphics update doesn't make FireRed better than Emerald for me.

Emerald is the biggest and has the most replay value so I'd recommend that.

Get Fire Red/Ruby or Leaf Green/Sapphire, and if you can get a second GBA & link cable to fix the berry glitch in Ruby & Sapphire. Emerald recolors the characters' garb and that bugs me, but you can get both of the legendaries in it instead of just one.

I loved Fire red. It was an awesome remake of the classic game. I would also pick up Pokemon Emerald.

Get them in this order: 1. FireRed or LeafGreen, your choice 2. Ruby or Sapphire, depending on whether you would want a water or a ground/fire type legendary in your team 3. Pokemon Emerald While Emerald is arguably better than Ruby or Sapphire (though not FireRed or LeafGreen), FireRed and LeafGreen are just more... fun... and fast paced

Any of them are excellent choices. My personal favorite is probably Saphhire though. No good reason other than being able to catch Kyogre. I would say Emerald, but I can't find it. I think my little sister stole it...
