I know most people are going to say 4, but I hated 4, and Zero was.... well generic. I enjoyed Veronica, but RE 3 was the pinnacle for me thus far. I like Jill for one, and just the whole game was great, especially Nemesis chasing you the entire time. That freaked me out even though after my 10th playthrough I knew where he was coming from I still got hosed.
Also the minigame with the different guys from Umbrella racing through the town, that was sweet.
Although RE2 was pretty good too.
i have to say, resident evil 4 is the best rendition of the series by far but re2 for ps1 is still my favorite.
Not RE4. But getting into that just starts debate.
The best "Resident Evil," not, "the best game in the Resident Evil series" is the Resident Evil Remake for Gamecube or Resident Evil 2.

You're doing a No True Scotsman to Resident Evil 4. It was a Resident Evil game, no matter the differences.
On topic, I've beaten RE: Deadly Silence, RE0, and RE4, and I've played some of CODE: Veronica X. My favorite main-line RE game, out of what I've played, is RE4, though obviously it's sort of a side-story (with important tie-ins, such as Ada's mode). Second favorite at this point in time is probably RE0, then Deadly Silence, then CVX (just because I haven't played much of it). I really want to get all the REs on GameCube.
Resdient Evil 1 in my opinion. I just love that mansion. And thats the game that got me sucked into the series. Absoloutly love it. VinnoTI don't think that i'll ever forget the horror of the zombie hiding behind the shower curtain, or first encountering the giant spiders that burst into swarms of little spiders when you shot them. Too bad I lost my copy. At least I still have the GC remake though. Speaking of which, an RE 2 or even Nemesis remake would be fantastic.

Behind the shower curtain? I've played through the DS port and there wasn't a zombie there, I don't think.

Really testing my memory on this one, as i don't recall it in the GC version either, but i'm pretty sure it was in a side room you didn't really have to go into on the original PSX version. Ah, the tub one. It's in the place where you fight Plant 42, which isn't part of the mansion, but a building somewhere nearby. In the mansion itself, I only remember one tub with a shower curtain, and I think the only time there was a zombie in that bathroom was in the gameplay mode exclusive to the DS.

Amen
Sorry but whoever says RE4 you're doing it wrong.

Resident Evil by the standard of title convention: if it bears the same title, it's part of the series. Your quotation marks around the title are there to sneak in personal bias--otherwise, they wouldn't be necessary. The bias is indicated by "if they are accepted as the formula that defines 'Resident Evil'". Many series evolve over time. Is Super Mario 64 a "Mario" game? Is Metroid Prime a "Metroid" game? What's the difference between a Mario game and a "Mario" game? Putting the quotation marks around the name is engaging in textual deception. You could just as easily state that RE4 fails to fit the formula that initially defined the series, which is absolutely true, but the fact is that since the series is now different, its defining characteristics are also, necessarily, different.
The topic is about what people's favorite RE game is, not what everyone's favorite main-RE-series-games-minus-RE4 game is, which is what using phrases like "Resident Evil" in quotation marks actually means. And since it's about every game in the series and not just those that fit the old defining characteristics, it's not about a specific type of game at all. If the title asked about Far Cry, then Far Cry 2 would be a legitimate answer for someone to give.
One of the points I'd like to make clear, though, is that I don't see a place for the aforementioned biased differentiation in a thread like this. I can definitely see legitimate disgust from people who dislike RE4 as a game and because it's in the main line of RE games almost by title alone, but that's all completely tangential, IMO.
Not to keep derailing the thread, but Dino Crisis was sweet is right. And the sawed off shotty you could make plus the magnum near the latter 3rd of RE3 = dead zombie guts shower time. I loved that part. After scrimping on ammo with pistols most of the game, I could just unleash my wrath then.SemiMaster
It looks like we both agree that at least to us, RE3 was the peak of RE series.
After that, Code Veronica was too slow in terms of gameplay and pacing. It ended up feeling like a step backwards. Then RE4 just killed RE series for me. From RE4, it was no longer RE but Misadventures of Umbrella Corp. In other words? A joke

You and I are on the same wavelength in a number of threads today it seems. Veronica was nice, but the pacing was terrible is right. For the first hour or two it was lots of enemies... then a lot of random running around. And yes, I honestly do not like RE4. I have faith in RE5 because of Coop, but I played R4 for 10 minutes and got bored with it. For real.[QUOTE="TriangleHard"][QUOTE="SemiMaster"] Not to keep derailing the thread, but Dino Crisis was sweet is right. I have faith in RE5 because of Coop, but I played R4 for 10 minutes and got bored with it. For real. I really wanted to like Veronica, but I just couldn't. I think one of the biggest mistake of Veronica was the setting. Some random island didn't exactly do it's job setting up it's mood. Resident Evil is at it's best in broken down city. Perhaps that's why in PS2 era, my favorite Resident Evil happens to be outbreak series. Sure it was clunky and story wasn't there (kind of a upgrade if you ask me), but it was a lot of fun. If PS2 had more organized online services and if RE outbreak made more careful design choices for better pacing and balance, RE outbreak would've gained as much attention as Left 4 Dead that's getting the popularity right now. At least that's my belief. As for RE4, I ended up finishing RE4. I just kept playing and hoping that the usual terribly written, but interesting RE story will take over and I'll get some good entertainment out of it. It was terribly written alright, but very very uninteresting story. Ada was the highlight of the story, but even her appearance was forced (I know RE story is always forced, but this was more than usual) and had little impact to overall game. I honestly have little to no interest in RE5. Co-op is the only thing that sort of interest me because me and my friends like co-op games and zombies, but the setting is little bitter for my taste and it doesn't exactly sell the zombie theme too well. The whole point of zombie theme is to have very organized setting having that disorganized situation. A city is supposed to be ordered and well policed, but getting that zombie outbreak just hits the viewers (players or readers, depending on medium) much strongly as it can clearly show what went wrong immediately. RE5 on the other hand, at times it looked like natives are on a riot instead of zombie outbreak. I think chances of me passing up RE5 is quite high.I've played 'em all and i have to say that RE4 for PS2 or RE for Gamecube are my favorites. What everyone else think?WildCarddeDeusRe4, even though I had a great time with Code Veronica when it came out for the Dreamcast..I still have to give the node to Re4
RE 2 > RE : CV > RE 4 > RE Remake > RE Original > RE 0 > RE 3 > all the offshoots, survivor etc etc etc.
While my ranking differs i totally agree with you on your other point. A perfect Resident Evil game will have you as the only hope of keeping YOURSELF alive. All the saving of others or the feeling of being there for a greater cause pushes an RE game too close to being just a recycled idea in a survival horror setting. Who hasnt saved (insert person here) a million times and thwarted the destruction of mankind in the process?Triple tie RE1-RE3 because it's really a survival-horror, you're saving yourslef.
RE4 turned into action-horror and saving someone.
