What is the best RPG story you ever played? For me it is Dragon Quest V

Kinda tied between Legend of Dragoon and Mass Effect.
With Legend of Dragoon, with how the game was presented, it was like watching a TV show comng to an end. You started with all these characters and unrelated events that eventually tied into a much bigger story. I found some of the characters to be very interesting and absolutely loved the game world.
Mass Effect has, for me at least, probably the best ending in a game this generation. Seeing Shepard in front of that planet, with the music, actually gave me a sense of accomplishment. Aside from that, it actually made me think about what else is out there (considering it takes place within our own galaxy). Any time I see news from NASA on other galaxies, stars, etc, and see pictures from them, I always think back to Mass Effect.
xenogears/ xenosaga
final fantasy nine
mass effect 1 and 2
ES: oblivion
asking to choose is like asking me which hand i would rather get cut off..
Xenogears. As someone else pointed out, very deep and complex story. It's too bad the second disc was rushed.
Final Fantasy IV. Best FF story I've seen in the series. Final Fantasy VI also has an excellent story too, as does V, I, IX, and, to a certain extent, VII. VIII? Forget about it...
Legacy Of Kain series. Best vampire story I've seen. Nothing else comes close.
Tales Of The Abyss and Vesperia. Great stories too.
And who could forget Final Fantasy Tactics? Brillant!
Ultima VII: The Black Gate - The story, the world, the characters, its got just about everything.
Knights of the Old Republic - Its got the Star Wars story so many were hoping would be in Episode I, II, and III.
Planescape Torment - For having a storyline that does not boil down to "Save the ___________" and doing a fantastic job at it.
I really loved the story in Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. Every character was memorable, and the side quests were fantastic. But the main narrative and the endings were great too.
I can't pick only one, but i can pick 2.
Xenogears due to its wonderful, complex and deep story about the origin of mankind. Besides the story, i loved the combat. The only thing i completely disliked was its random encounters, i highy hate those.
Then, Baldur's Gate 2, fantastic characters, Minsc and Boo were so funny.
Nice to see a fellow fan! Looking back, I felt like I missed out on some of the game by always being a little too goody goody. It backfired for me spectacularly one time, when Edwin decided i was being too nice and left the group...in the middle of the Illithid area of the Underdark. Trying to get out of there without a hard-as-nails spell caster was a nightmare! Then, Baldur's Gate 2, fantastic characters, Minsc and Boo were so funny.

I don't think I've come across the best yet. There are plenty of older role-playing games like Fallout, Planescape: Torment, Ultima VII, Arx Fatalis and Baldur's Gate II that I haven't played (or gotten deeply into) yet. So I don't think I can be in a position to claim what the "best" might be.
Probably Chrono Trigger. It may not have the best story overall...but I think it stuck with me the most, and more than other big RPGs that have come my way.
My favourites are the Mass Effect franchise, Fable 1 and Diablo 2. Mass Effect because it has the best storyline I have ever seen, it is intense and original, all the characters have some character depth they are not emotionless NPCs. Fable 1 because the moral system and the impact on your character was very original at the time, also I really loved Jack of Blades. Diablo 2 for its depth in gameplay and for its quality as a game overall.

... How is Mass Effects story original? And the characters are mostly one dimensional archetypes...
Whatver floats ones boat I guess, but come on....
It never ceases to amaze me that whenever a thread is created about "best story ever" it's a matter of time before Diablo 2 and a number of Final Fantasy games join the conversation. :P Every single time.... I don't get it. They're good games, yes, but their story lines aren't exactly gems of complex originality and creativity.ChiliDragon
I guess they need to play more games... Or just open a book once and awhile.
It all depends on one's frames of reference, and what one has played in the past and can compare new game experiences to. As for your second comment, the story in Plancescape: Torment is by far deeper and much better than a lot of modern books (and classics). Being a book doesn't in itself make the story and characters superior in quality. It needs to be a well written book for that. ;)I guess they need to play more games... Or just open a book once and awhile.

I agree.. But it's good to know that i'm not the only when getting a bit puzzled when people act as horror stories or monsters that, for an exempel, Lovecraft wrote about back in the early-late 1920 as something new.

Or maybe they prefer simplicity in their stories? Complexity might make a story technically better, but what's wrong with enjoying a simple tale about a group of heroes defeating a demon? Simplicity =/= bad. In defense of Diablo, the cutscenes and characters were easy to follow and pretty memorable, moving the narrative along nicely. What's not to like?
Sure, Planescape is better but not everyone likes getting that involved in a story.
But just because something is enjoyable doesn't mean it's good, in the sense that it's well written, thought through, well paced, and the characters three-dimensional and realistic. So if we're talking about what makes a story technically better, and better crafted, then yes, simplicity can be bad.Or maybe they prefer simplicity in their stories? Well sure, if it does it poorly. One of my favorite stories in recent memory is Uncharted 2. The story was ridiculously simple, but it was a lot of fun, told well, and the characters were believable.
A poorly told, simple story is terrible, sure. But you can say the same thing for a poorly told complex story. In fact, more often than not stories that try to complicate their narrative end up failing and become littered with plot holes and that sort of thing. Planescape was lucky because of the talent behind it.

Which is why I said "can be" bad, not that it automatically is. The simpler a story is, the more obvious it becomes when you do it wrong, so they're actually more difficult to work with. That's probably why so few games with simple stories are annoying, they're told poorly, and it's glaringly obvious. Uncharted 2 and Heavenly Sword are two shining exceptions.I enjoyed Morrowind's story, for what it was. I really liked Chrono Trigger/Cross. I also enjoyed the original Parasite Eve. Dragon Quest VIII was great too.
edit: doh, cant forget Secret of Mana and Earthbound!

He is right, the more complex the story, the more variables you have to work with and take account for. For example FFVII underwrites Jenova, which messes the entire plot up including Sephiroth's character and motive. More complex stories can also feel forced, Xenogears somewhat, but Xenosaga is the big example Simple stories are easier to execute, and have less variables to account for. Most RPG stories now are more complex, but an example of an excellent simple story is Shadow of The Colossus. POP Sands of Time is another example.I enjoyed Morrowind's story, for what it was.
