Sonic the Hedgehog 3 combined with Sonic & Knuckles is my favorite but the epicness is equal to number 2. Both games allowing you to be super sonic whenever you want(though you didn't need him it was nice to be unstoppable save for bottomless pits and getting squished). For number 2 all levels were attractive to me as well as the music but the final two levels segment was a Legendary video game moment. When I was little, the second act in the second zone always got to me but that kept me going until I figured how to get across as well as "sneak in" over the top of the level(not a glitch, the secret path). In Sonic the Hedgehog3 & Knuckles hmm, where do I start? The music from every level was nicely burned and encoded into my DNA. From number 3, Ice cap zones music "cap"-tivated me from the first note. It did sound alittle like a michael jackson bass segment. The final segment of that game, though not as high up in altitude, was pretty good. Knuckles got what he deserved at the time and the final music for the boss and even the credits had me jumping. The bouncing barrels in Carnival night zone act 2 had me down for a while but learning the momentum before time ran out each and every time(with or without the water/bubble shield) as well as finally getting to the Ice Cap zone made it worth the effort. Not that I wanted to skip levels but I never could get the level select cheat to work. I wish I could have used debug mode in that or maybe haveplayed through "night" mode. In Sonic & Knuckles the different boss battles and level differences with the slightly different tones between acts made it playable again and again. It wasn't all about hitting the boss repeatedly, you had to find patterns, coax a guardian to follow you to his death, and hit a boss with his own weapon. The game slowly builds you up without words or you even knowing it to a grand finale riddled with suspense, betrayal, and friendship that spans the sky's themselves. That is them by theirselves. put them together and you have the makings of epicness. I hereby decree that under epic and legendary in the dictionary, thesaurus, and the great wikipedia itself that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles be the first entry. You start all-powerful and surprisingly or not have it stripped from you. "Go on, take those emeralds without me lifting so much as a finger. I don't need them to save the day". You blast through levels while still taking time to explore and be entranced by smoothness and appropriate sound. An affinity for knuckles grows as does a hatred within you for that spiky-handed, grape-eating punk. The time trials were too short, I believe, and while not being as good as 2 they were filled with their own tricks andcatchy track tunes. The transition between the two games is done nicely as you continue the story and begin to find out how the Floating Island works. After beating the game you realize it is not over even if you have all the chaos emeralds in Sonic & Knuckles. Having to get all 14 emeralds (7 chaos, and 7 super) to get the real ending wasn't that hard and it was great to play as Super Sonic, Hyper Sonic, Super Knuckles, Hyper Knuckles, and even Super Tails(the little birds did make the last fight interesting.). Everything mentioned is equal to and deserving of one of the best ending sequences in video game history. Your relentless pursuit of the Master emerald has you rushing through the atmosphere dodging spikes, asteroids/space junk, and pitfalls, avoid getting crushed, lasered, missleled and spike mined, defeating 5 final bosses with I believe 58 hits before you run out of power and land on the top wing of a bi-plane that somehow regardless if you believe it or not, with or without a dense enough atmosphere of oxygen to support life and without burning up comes in and saves you from certain death and snags the Master Emerald without knowing what happens to your nemesis!!!huff-huff. Sorry I just get so excited thinking about it. I liked Sonic Adventure(battle) 1 and 2 but I wasn't too keen about switching between sonic and shadow in the end of the second. I didn't like having to fight a dinosaur with a space needle up his butt(no wonder he was mad) but then how do you top what you did earlier in Sonic3 & Knuckles. Unfortunately I have not played Sonic CD yet but always wanted to.
