I was just wondering which Square and SquareSoft games everyone thought were the best, prior to them becoming SquareEnix. Personally I really enjoyed the early Final Fantasy games, specifically Final Fantasy VIII which is my favorite game.

I love FF8 as well! Still play it. Since we are talking about before Square bought Enix, I just wanted to give an honorable mention to an Enix game Illusions of Gaia. Still would love a remake or sequel!

It's nice to know I'm not alone :)

Yay! Another FFVIII fan! :) I love FFVIII, I try to play it at least once every year lol that game is solely responsible for getting me into JRPGs and gaming in general!
I've never heard of that game before, maybe I'l try it out.
I loved FF7, FF8, FF9 and FF10. Aside from those Squaresoft titles, I loved Tobal No.1 and the Bouncer. . .wow come to think of it I really need to catch up on my Square and Squaresoft games ;). Xenogears anyone :p
Alpha, Will : The Death Trap II, Cruise Chaser : Blassty, King's Knight Special. All for PC.
Actually, I liked the old ENIX more than the old SQUARE.
Since you're a big FF8 fan I was wondering if they ever did anything with actaully printing out and selling the Triple Triad Card game? I tried to find pictures online to print out and make my own deck but its quite hard. I am thinking of still doing it but replacing pictures with easier to find characters like main characters from a bunch of games (FF8 included of course. gotta have my Rinoa card lol)

They did release a Triple Triad Card game although I'm not really sure whether it was exclusive to Japan or not. I've never played it but that would be really cool! I never considered playing Triple Triad with real cards :)

I found the Triple Triad set online...$807 not including shipping. Unfortunately I can't go outside and encounter random battles and earn that kind of cash in a few hours lol. anyone know where I might be able to find another set lol
I almost forgot about Square's non-RPGs, in which case I'd also add:
3D WorldRunner
Bushido Blade
The Bouncer
These weren't necessarily great games, but they did add some interesting twists to their own respective genres, like the third-person platforming and 3D stereoscopy in 3D WorldRunner (long before Mario 64 and the 3DS), the three-dimensional environments and realistic maiming in Bushido Blade (which has unfortunately been ignored by most fighting games), and the RPG elements in The Bouncer (long before brawlers like Devil May Cry or God of War added them).
Final Fantasy IX was fantastic. One of the best titles I've ever played. And this is coming from someone who just played through it on the PS3 this spring for the first time :P

chrono trigger, xenogears, and breath of fire 1. (North american version of BoF1 was published by square)
Wow, awesome! So many good games! I'm sad to say I haven't played the majority of them but I am planning on playing them soon. Besides FFVIII my second favorite SquareSoft game is FFX. Right now I'm playing FFIV which is really fun although I am playing the DS version so I don't know if that really counts as SquareSoft since it's technically a remake by SquareEnix.
I'd still count that as a Square Soft game. That's the only versionI have played as well. It's pretty much the same game with a new presentation and slight gameplay tweaks. If you like this game, you'll probably like the original as well. Unless the presentation is extremely important to you.Wow, awesome! So many good games! I really enjoyed a lot of the PSX square games, FFVII and FFVIII specifically. Xenogears and Parasite Eve II are still played to this day, and I enjoy every second of them. I'm finally playing FFIX again, I didn't like it when I was younger, so I was hoping this playthrough would provide a more enjoyable experience. Too bad though, my FFIX discs do not play the best anymore for some reason...

Yeah, they're pretty much the same game as far as I know. I'd really like to play the original as well but I've really been into the DS lately and I thought it would fun to play a Final Fantasy game. I'm really enjoying it so far and I like all the characters so far, especially Cecil and Rydia.
Best SquareSoft game- Xenogears
Best SquareEnix game- Final Fantasy Xdbz987
Final Fantasy X is actually a SquareSoft game too, they released it in 2001 and didn't officially become Square Enix until 2003 :) Which do you think is better? I haven't played Xenogears yet but I own it and it's on my to play list. Final Fantasy X is my second favorite game ever, after Final Fantasy VIII.
FF7, FF8, FF10 & FF12.
Though not by enix I'd strongly recommend Resonance of Fate (End of Eternity in japan)
The battlesystem, or the attacks and gunplay in it are just so cool! never gets old.
There's Lovable characters with a lot of funny parts in the game.
And navigating the world map with different hex shaped pieces is strangely fun aswell.
Lost Odyssey wasn't bad, though when I got to disc 4 (which was new) it didn't work.
The Last Remnant, that was pretty bad.. lol
A very tough question, one I could never answer.
FFT, Chrono trigger, Parasite eve, FF1, FF4, FF6, FF7, FF9, Secret of Evermore, Secret of Mana 1 or 3, Legend of Mana.
Â
If I was to say which I think is best overall for its time an still now? Chrono Trigger, or FF4
Just for myself though? Parasite eve, or Secret of Evermore.
These are my picks:
I've always felt that those 4 games were Squaresoft's true masterpieces and were way better than any of the Final Fantasy games, IMO.
Final Fantasy IX was fantastic. One of the best titles I've ever played. And this is coming from someone who just played through it on the PS3 this spring for the first time :P

It has aged extremely well, especially if you compare it to FFVII and FFVIII, the former being visually rough around the edges (especially with those hideous character models), the latter having balance issues and flaws with the junction/magic system.
definitely agree with Parasite Eve, but Secret of Mana is my fav. These are my picks:
- Brave Fencer Musashi
- Chrono Trigger
- Einhander
- Parasite Eve

Final Fantasy IX has its fair share of balance problems too. Â Pretty easy to break the game with "X" Killer abilities as well as MP Attack. Â
Hell, the whole game is basically a cakewalk besides Ozma.
Anyways my pick has to be Chrono Trigger or Super Mario RPG (despite being co-developers with Nintendo).
Not in any particular order:
I'm pretty biased to the Final Fantasy universe lol
And I'm very biased to the SNES gems. Chrono Trigger, Final Fanasy IV, V, VI, Super Mario RPG
