Probably Mass Effect 2. Jackc8:lol: ME2 didn't have a story. The entire over-arching "story" was essentially "Shepard dies, Cerberus resurrects him, Collector's are threatening human colonies, Shepard goes after Collector's and defeats them." It isn't even one-dimensional it's so thin. Had you said the first game, you might have had a leg to stand on. -- Stories this gen haven't been that great. They aren't that great for gaming period. The better stories are the one's that let the player be freer to interpret things, which is more in line with gaming philosophy. Rather than shepherding the gamer down a singular path between cutscenes.

This is why I said the series and not ME2. ME2 had the gameplay but the story was like a filler for part 3. ME1 is when the real meat of the story takes place.
I liked BioShock's and STALKER: Shadow Of Chernobyl's stories.
I really like Shadow Of Chernobyl's for some reason.. It wasn't all the complicated I don't think. Might be how it sets up the game world or something.
But I haven't played a bunch of games that might have good stories.
BioShock 2 (the ending was especially great)
BioShock
To the Moon
Portal 2
The Witcher
The Witcher 2
Heavy Rain
The Book of Unwritten Tales
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
Mass Effect
Haven't played MGS4 or Mass Effect 2 or 3, so can't comment on those.

The story is pretty bad in ME2 and it doesn't get any better when you finish ME3 and realizes that it was more or less just a filler.

If ME3 had a proper ending that didn't render both the previous games useless fillers I would've agreed.GTA 4, Half-Life 2 and Portal/Portal 2 come to mind.
But because it's April Fool's day, I'll add in Call of Duty just for fun.
According to IW the games feature "deep" characters, lul :)GTA 4, Half-Life 2 and Portal/Portal 2 come to mind.

Whole heartedly agree with to the moon. What an excellent experience
I would alsio throw the very ambiguous Dear Esther in there. Because everyone has a different understanding of it

What the **** Are you freaking serious? Okay, the games are insanely fun to play, but deep characters?

They think they have deep meaninful stories and said it was stupid to say that they weren't innovating anymore
Mass Effect series - With or without the endings of ME3 it is still a great achievement in story telling
If the Indoctrination, or Dream ending is correct i would actually believe those to be great endings to the franchise. At least for me they are what i wanted. Whether they were good, or bad endings does not matter, i still feel it may be the richest universe in gaming along with being one of the best stories ever told.
Enslaved
Deus Ex HR
Bioshock
Except selling the ending as DLC is just something that you don't do.Mass Effect series - With or without the endings of ME3 it is still a great achievement in story telling

I'm certain that last year when the release of BF3 and MW3 was getting close they threw something like that out on the internet. I do believe it was because we've been following the same characters for several games now and have grown 'attached' to them. It was quite lulzy.[QUOTE="brucecambell"]Except selling the ending as DLC is just something that you don't do.Mass Effect series - With or without the endings of ME3 it is still a great achievement in story telling

You're jumping to conclusions. There is no new ending for one, there is also no new ending that has to be purchased. People need to quit jumping to the conlucion that the ending was held back for DLC
It is highly unlikely. Even the supposed chance that Bioware may go back & enhance the ending would be a purely, 100% free update for everybody.

You're saying they are just going to leave it, as is? That makes no sense.I like the Mass Effect series and The Witcher, but just to be different:
Enslaved had a really well told story. Thanks to the excellent voice acting and characterization throughout.
Alice: Madness Returns has a pretty good one too. The ending was really memorable.
And I haven't finished it yet, but 999 has me completely hooked.
