Which of the systems, SNES or GEN/MD, has the best racing/driving games? Some notable mentions:

SNES: Top Gear Series, Super Chase H.Q. GP-1 (people seem to like GP-1 so I listed it.) Etc.

GEN/MD: Ourun series, Rad Racer, Virtua Racing etc.

Which do you think is think has the best racing games/Driving?

Super Hang-On, OutRun and the Micro Machines games definitely give the Mega Drive the edge. Virtua Racing is also a very impressive port on the Mega Drive.

Of course, the SNES did have F-Zero and Mario Kart. Nothing to be sniffed at. (I think I love the soundtrackto the original F-Zero more than the actual game though)

Mario Kart seems unfinished to me on he SNES, and I to prefer the soundtrack to the game as I believe f-Zero is terribly broken for many different reasons. Not terrible however. Ourunners has good music.

Genesis had "super Monaco GP: World Championship"... Which I recall as being a very lifelike game, at the time. Substantial HUD, cars look very real and not cartoon-y, gearbox options, the works. And, it had a GREAT rearview mirror which was kind of new to me at the time as well, and I was devoted to it for that mirror. I thought it was brilliant.

All due respect to "Mario Kart" and "F-Zero" because they have an army out there, but for me, Nintendo fan that I am, I still have to give the edge in this conversation to the Genesis/ Mega-Drive, for having "Monaco".

:)

Of course Road Rash is not a Super Nintendo, its a freakin game, not a console! /sarcasm

Genesis does what Nintendon't, it dont have motorcyle action!

But to be honest, Super Nintendo has an edge,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sPrZW2wXP4Way better on the SNES, because the Genesis has the technical problem where it cant have two sounds at the same time? Like not enough channels or something?

I will put that with with the dumb rumor that the SNES can't run outrunners because it can spread 16-bit on 3 different planes on split screen, and that the SNES can't run Outrun 2019 because the SNES can't shade in dark colors.

Spread 16 bits on three different planes, I do not understand. Ever notice in Sonic where that 1 up music plays, everything else stops? There is a reason in Rock n Roll racing that the Genesis music stops playing every time the announcer says something, why would they do that on purpose if they did not have to? Why not just edit your original message? Btw, I think the Genesis has a huge advantage with its blast processing power, but Mod 7 kind of helps with F-Zero.

They think that on split screen the SNES can't use 16 bits on the background the sprites, and the hud all at once, especially in animation. There are games like burning rangers, Ristar, and a few others where they play like 3 sounds at the same time, it's called being lazy.

The Road Rash

Super Off Road

Mario Kart

Rock n Roll Racing

Fzero

Biker Mice from Mars

Uniracers

Those are probably my favorites(I could be missing some). I'm not even sure what is/is not exclusive to each console, but the racing genre didn't cater that well to these consoles, imo.

Going with the GOAT on this one: SNES for....

  • F-Zero
  • Super Mario Kart
  • Stunt Race FX
  • Super Off Road

Of course the Sega Genesis has Out Run and Super Monaco GP so I really have to with both:P

Greatest of all time.

I'll take the Genesis library overall. It always felt more like the arcade on Genesis. I love SNES Mario Kart though.

Well, I have to say MD/Gen was very strong here with games like OutRun, Super HangOn, Virtua Racing, ect., but SNES had Super Mario Kart, F-Zero, Stunt Race FX (I enjoyed it much more than Virtua Racing), the better version of Test Drive 2 and Top Gear 3000. So I will have to go with SNES. But I also have to say that racing games benefited a lot from the transition into fast 3D graphics which these two consoles couldn't provide (I mean look at Hard Drivin' and Race Drivin' on them - almost unplaylable). Still, some of these games are rightfully classics of the genre.

Always wanted to try "Rock n Roll Racing", but never got around to it:( also, I've seen a few mentions on Road Rash and I have to say that game was A LOT of fun. There was supposed to be a SNES version, but it was canceled I believe.:/

As much as I love the Genesis over the SNES, SNES had F-Zero. So it wins.

Neither. Racing really did suck until 3D, the only genre I really think NEEDED 3D to become a great genre of gaming.

If I had to choose, SNES simply because it had F-Zero.
