What would you guys say is the best video game soundtrack (ever)?

There are so many, but if I had to put it down to 1, it would have to be:

Xenogears.

Even to this day, 12 years after its release, nothing has come close to this (for me).

Please state your top VG soundtrack of all time.

FF VII had an amazing soundtrack. I just wish it had the sound quality xenogears was given (not midi, but CD quality). Crisis Core has some revamped, full orchestra FF VII remixes and they are fantastic.

Silent hill produced some of the best music I have ever heard for a game; it fits the surroundings almost too perfectly. Over all, the silent hill 2 soundtrack is good even outside of the game, to the point of me considering putting it on vinyl to get the open air static added to it while listening.

Gotta agree with you there. When I bought this old game and listened to the soundtrack, I just had to look for more techno music.

This. I have the Silent Hill soundtrack on a double cd, I listened to it alot for a while outside of the game. Chrono Cross and Metal Gear Solid were great aswell. And maybe earlier Tomb Raider games, the atmosphere was so good.

Silent Hill 2. Very moody and well done. In fact all games in the series have a great soundtrack.

I'm going to throw up a tie between Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross.

I also really love the Final Fantasy soundtracks, but I want to give a mention of Banjo-Kazooie for being underrated in terms of music

I still listen to and love the FFVII sound track. It's one of my favourites.

But just to be different, I'm not going to pick it. I can't believe no one has said Shadow of The Colossus yet! That's my pick. Great soundtrack in that game.

anyone here just heard the mass effect 2 soundtrack? it's brilliant, i dare say it's 3 times better than the soundtrack of the 1st game. there's no song similar to m4, pt. 2, but the epicness of the soundtrack makes up for it. the soundtrack does have a darker and more sad tone to it too.

Any of the Castlevania (up to and including SotN, but not beyond) and Metroid soundtracks. Also anything by Matt Uelmen. Also the Parasite Eve soundtrack was pretty bad ass.

Final Fantasy VI

The Decisive Battle

Terra

Shadow

Dancing Mad

CHRONO TRIGGER

Magus' Theme

World Revolution

Corridor of Time

Tyranno Lair

DONKEY KONG COUNTRY

The whole damn thing.

Those are my favourites, and are what I think to be the best video game soundtracks ever.

If there was a soundtrack composed of :

Living With Determination - Iwao To Dai version (Persona 3 - you know the dorm remix in late December)

Signs of Love - Persona 4

Magus' Theme - Chrono Trigger

Exploration - Mass Effect (thats where you are on the planet select map)

Air Man's Theme - Megaman 2

Double Dragon Theme - Double Dragon (And Super Double Dragon and River City Ransom)

Yell Dead Cell - Metal Gear Solid 2

Snake Eater - Metal Gear Solid 3

Aeris' Theme - Final Fantasy 7

Ain't No Rest for the Wicked - Borderlands (by Cage The Elephant)

Guile's Theme - Street Fighter 2

Legend of Zelda Theme - ... duh

Now that in my opinion would be some of the greatest hits in video game music.

It's gotta be Tales of Legendia. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xvbDFbbQLU

While it wasn't as great as Tales of the Abyss or Tales of Symphonia, the soundtrack and cast of characters were the best.

Now that you bring it up, Legendia definitely had great music. I wish I still had the game...

Morrowind, Oblivion, and Dark Reign OSTs are all scored by Jeremy Soule, who is probably the best VGM scorer in the industry. The Deus Ex OST, scored by Alexander Brandon is brilliant - partly because of the striking relevance to each level. NYC has a kind of a sad hip-hop theme, while Paris has a mix of piano and new age synthesiser. Brandon also worked on the OSTs to Unreal, UT99 and Deus Ex: Invisible War, which also have amazing soundtracks. The Final Fantasy games also tend to have good soundtracks, but I didn't think FFVII's was as good as most people make it out to be - it was a bit too simple for me, as well as the fact that all the tracks were MIDIs.

1. Final Fantasy 10 2. Mass Effect 3. Final Fantasy 7 4. Pokemon lol Not sure, I'd really have to think hard of the music. Music for me sets the game in place, without good music if feels the story just drowns in crap.

1. Resident Evil 4: I found the music incredibly immersive: it varies from menacing, creepy, melancholic, mellow, adrenaline-pumping (mercenaries), epic and more.

2. Silent Hill (entire series): What's needed to say about the series has already been said somewhere in this thread.

3. Metroid Prime: the ambient soundtrack is phenomenal. It perfectly fits each environment you step into. The first time you stepped into Phendrana (for those who played it), you knew you didn't want to leave that place.

4. F-Zero GX: techno and rock soundtrack that you could easily put on your portable player

5. Civilization IV: You can't not mention a soundtrack that is inspired by some of the real world's civilizations (and a soundtrack spanning from past to present)

Honourable mention: Eternal Darkness. There is not a lot of music in this game, but when there is, you know something bad is gonna open.

FFX's music was good. The Hymm of the Fayth I found particularly soothing.

I really dig the title screen music from Blood Bowl, something about it just puts the word "epic" in my head

I totally agree, especially that melody that plays when Issun does something funny.
