Hey everybody,

So I was watching the E3 report on the new Ghost Recon game, and their use of the Kinect was pretty impressive (mind you I am not sold at all on motion controls).

This made me think before this whole motion control movement (or fad) what was the most important advancement in controlling video games? To me, I'd just have to say the change from a joystick to a D-Pad/buttons layout.

i think the biggest innovation was good analog sticks. (like on the ps1 dual shock controller). the fact that they are buttons as well is huge. Next I would say the D-pad design of nintendo. the original NES controller is amazing if u ask me.

I actually think that the Wii-U won't sell nearly as well as the original Wii did because: -Imagine the price of buying a second, third and fourth controller, it's gonna cost the same as buying a second console, and one of the main attractions of the Wii was it's lower price point. -The simplicity of the original Wii controller really appealed to casual gamers because they could easily get the knack of the motion control (this is also why Kinect is doing so well). The new Wii-U controller has buttons ALL over it, and looks seriously uncomfortable to hold for extended periods of time. It looks to gimmiky and complicated to be of much interest to the passing casual gamer. -I kinda like the idea of asymmetrical multiplayer (one thing displayed on the controller screen, a different thing on the TV), but I thought Sony's 3D playstion TV that gave two different players a different image from the SAME screen was a much better idea. I think the PSVita has interesting controls. I REALLY like the rear touch planel, and the kind of games that come out on playstation consoles will be greatly enhanced by the multitouch display. I may pick one of these up when the price drops, as I've been severely disappointed by the 3DS. The 3D effect i find irritating and just turn off, the graphics are no better than the PSP, and the screen is smaller than the PSP's. The touch screen is STILL resistive, WHY???! Half it's titles are ports of N64 games, which TBH are much better played on an N64!

The analog stick as redefined by the N64 pad imo. However I now feel it's time to move on and I'd go for a trackball controller. Sadly no console company is listening.

Yeah I would have to put the analog stick up there, especially with the dual shock/ dual analogs, which allowed for both y and x axis movement/looking.

Shoulder buttons, well on handhelds at least. When I first found out that the GBA was going to have shoulder buttons I nearly shat a brick.

ps1 controller with dual analog stick. after they added the dual analog stick the original ps1 controller just seemed bland. also rumble was a pretty awesome advancement as well.

I think this may be the first time for it, but I agree with you. Wii U was pretty dang impressive and as far back as I can remember has to be the biggest jump in controller technology.

The D pad in 1983 by Nintendo. The analog sticks of the Dualshock controller by Sony. (Yes I know Nintendo had Analog thumbstick in Sept 1996) So Nintendo gets the inovation credit but Sony perfected Analog control with the DualShock Controllers, 1,2,3. 1996-2011 sorry Nintendo.

Biggest advancement I remember is the N64 controller. Allowed you to play FPS effectively on consoles, and analog movement was a huge upgrade.

The analog sticks were a great improvement. It's almost hard to imagine how I ever played games without them. :P

The mouse...CellAnimation

Interestingly the mouse was never ment to be a gaming controller. But things changed quickly when we got "point and click" adventures, FPSes, real-time strategies and so forth.

are you sure the Saturn pad came out first??

at any rate even if it didn't , the first analog controller was not the N64 controller, but the Atari 5200 controller.

Looks like the N64 launched about two weeks before the Saturn analog control hit (end of june- july 5 '96). Was the atari 5200 control a real analog stick or a digital joystick?

it was a real analog controller , though not a very high quality one apparently. analog was quite unecessary for the time if you think about it too.

I've heard some claims that Sony actually made the analoge stick before Nintendo but the N64 still was the first console to feature it on a gamepad. I'm sure there were analoge sticks before but they weren't really relevant for 3D gaming.

hence why the 5200 controller was basically useless. alot of people say its not very good for games like Pac Man or most games in fact at the time great strategy Atari, make a controller that hardly works with the most popular games at the time.......
