I am sad to admit that I have not yet played Bioshock. I definitely want to pick it up (probably will this week) before Bioshock 2 comes out. I have a 360, PS3, and a PC that should be able to run it fine. So I'm wondering which version I should buy and if there are any big differences between them, thanks in advance for any input.

Xbox 360. The original console it was on and plays great. No big difference except for tiny little texture improvement

Personal recommendation: None, since it's not very good. But if you're insistent, then I don't think any platform is downright superior in any regards, really. I'd say choose based off what you can find it cheapest for and and which control input (360, DS3, kb/m) you like best.

The PC version is probably the cheapest (hell, it was $5 during boxing week on Steam), the 360 version likely comes up next, and the PS3 version is the most recent so it'll be the most expensive. It also has some extra content, but the graphics aren't as good as the other two versions.

But if he HAS a PS3, why should he say no to that little, tiny improvement? It's there for him....it's not like the 360 version plays any better. Get it for PS3. The port is seemless. The install also shortens loading times. You also get another difficulty setting that removes vita-chambers, if you want the challenge. I believe the PS3 version also has some exclusive DLC. Nothing major or anything, but it's there. I think it's a couple of "challenge rooms" and some extra trophies. Honestly, unless you're a diehard PC gamer, if you haven't bought this game yet, there's not a whole lot of reason to not get the PS3 version.

One one the best FPS titles to come out since Half Life 2 IMO. TC I think the PC version is the cheapest in piece now a days so go with that one. Out the three formats they all play very well even the PS3 port so it doesn't which one you pick up really.

To be fair, gameplay wise, it's not as amazing as people make it out to be. It's not bad, but it's not great. It's just pretty good, or solid. What MAKES the game a must-have is the story, the atmosphere, and the world it creates.

Nope, I am neutral. I love my PS3 and I love my Xbox 360. Play more PS3 actually. 360 is for Rock Band

I only played a bit of the PS3 version but it seemed a little more washed out than the 360 version. It's not a huge difference, though, I was just being picky.

To be fair, gameplay wise, it's not as amazing as people make it out to be. It's not bad, but it's not great. It's just pretty good, or solid. What MAKES the game a must-have is the story, the atmosphere, and the world it creates.Paladin_King
If you're playing a game for the story, atmosphere, and/or the "world" it creates, you should reexamine your priorities, and your hobby altogether.

Thanks for all the input guys, I heard that what makes the game is the atmosphere and story. After reading all your responses I'm leaning towards the PS3 version, but if I come across it on steam for that cheap I doubt I'll pass it up.

Different people play games for different reasons. I do agree that the feel of Bioshock is what makes it worth playing (particularly at its current low price point) and not the gameplay, which is extremely unsatisfying.

I'm well-aware that people play games for different reasons. That doesn't make them correct, just delusional.

If I wanted a good story, I'd go read a novel, because I know that even the best video game story is only as good as the most middling novel, and why would I want to read a middling novel? If I wanted atmosphere, I'd watch videos of the game. Story and atmosphere are fine, but those are secondary features. If the game doesn't play well, then it's not worth a dime, atmosphere and story be damned.

Yea the atmosphere and story is what I loved about BioShock same reason for the Half Life titles also.

I don't play a game FOR those reasons, but a solid game with a great story/atmosphere (Which also usually means great graphics and sound) will always trump a game that's just solid gameplay-wise. Also, I take it you're not a huge RPG fan? I suppose you also don't really "get the big deal" over Metal Gear, particularly Metal Gear Solid 4? The gameplay in Bioshock is very good, but it's the world of Rapture and the story that really push it to another level. I like my hobby just fine thanks. Also, I recommend reading a few Bioshock reviews if you think I'm so greviously in the wrong here. I suspect that you'll find most reviewers to also have "incorrect" priorities. The bottom-line is that we're not playing Pong any longer. Faceless Japanese fighters and dime-a-dozen beat em ups/side scrollers are no longer great. Most game reviews DO consider story elements and atmosphere, and that comes, as i said, with considerations of graphics and sound. Read a review of Dead Space...half of what people loved about that game was the "Atmosphere." I take it though, that you didn't like that game either. Again, the reviewers really needed to re-examine their priorites on that one. Story and atmosphere are no longer throwaways, and chances are, a game won't be AAA unless it makes a strong effort at either one, the other, or both. Find me a GOTY contender from last year that didn't make a strong effort at either a good story, good atmosphere, or both? Seriously, give it a shot.

Well, I'd put the gameplay aspect much lower. Never have I been so careless in an FPS. But my feeling sort of is- why watch my health when I'm just going to respawn with no penalty? But for me, the most disappointing aspect was how great the story/atmosphere is. Now, when I say disappointing, I don't necessarily mean bad, but since it was hyped to the moon, I expected more. Rapture itself is pretty neat, but I just don't see the story elements being interesting at all. To be fair, I'm not very far in (finished the part with surgeon), but thus far it hasn't grabbed me. Does it get better from here? I probably would've continued but my nostromo n52 seems to be a bit busted, so I have a hard time play with WASD. I could plug in my 360 gamepad, but I'm not extremely motivated to play it, so I haven't.

I'm in agreement that the best videogame story is on par with a trashy novel. Bioshock's story isn't particularly great even in videogaming terms, and the way it tries to tell it to you (via awkwardly placed and activated recorders) doesn't help much either. The illusion of choice is shallow. The end boss is a joke. The 'twist' is the only decent part and that's maybe five minutes long. The feel of Rapture, though, is something you can't get from watching videos in a passive way. Wandering the abandoned, rusted, and watery sections of the city gives a sense of the scale of the place and what it might have looked like prior to the events leading up to the game. It's not quite enough to carry the experience, but it's certainly enough to make you wish they could have worked on the game's problems. Ideally the gunplay and plasmids would be better, since Doom provided more enemy feedback when you shot them and all but one of the plasmids are utterly useless in practice, but as a $5 purchase a person could do far worse than Bioshock.

I have both the PC and 360 version and there is really little between them. Like others have mentioned, if you want the complete game with all that is on offer at rapture than get the PS3 version, otherwise get what ever is cheaper at the time of purchase.

Either way the game is AMAZING, you will not be disappointed. I personally rate this as one of the best next gen games to date.

Bring on Bioshock 2 ;)
