I can agree with Sunshine, but not with MKIII, I still think the addition of character and combo's, friendships and whatnot was enough to list it as a classic. After that though, it went downhill.. SMB2 certainly never got the credit it should've. FFVIII gets a lot of hate.

I'm big into Final Fantasy, but these ones, forget it: Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest (Gamespot said: A dumb down game...With having no connection to the other games) Final Fantasy X-2: loved the job systems(reason I liked FFV) but got tedious after a bit.

I never said I didnt like SMB2, just that its a black sheep. It wasnt even a mario game :) It released as doki doki panic (or something like that) in japan, and they threw mario into it for the US release, because they thought the REAL SMB2 that only released in Japan was too hard for other countries... LOL

Contra Force has to have the same story as above, almost as if they threw Contra in the title just to boost sales.

I love SM Sunshine, but yeah its way different than other games in the Mario series.

For Zelda, I always thought that MM was a bit weird. It was kinda scary and the 3 day cycle thing got on my nerves.

I seem to like a lot of these "black sheeps". I love Super Mario Bros. 2, and am currently having a lot of fun with Super Mario Sunshine. Also, Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link is one of my all-time favorite NES games. And Castlevania II: Simon's Quest is my favorite of the NES entries of Castlevania. My big disappointment was Actraiser 2. I absolutely loved the first one. The combination of God/building sim and 2D action levels was great in the first one! But then in the second one they completely got rid of the God/building aspect, making it just another 2D action-game.

I dont know how you would consider half of these black sheep.... or 90% of them.... but maybe your least favorite? You did pick some good series though :P

Going back to Super Mario Sunshine, I know longer feel it should be considered the black sheep of the series. The game is amazing.

what are some black sheeps of great video game franchises? Try not to list spin-off titles(only a proper sequel in the series)

Resident evil 5( Yes i said it. why why WHY AFRICA? It doesn't feel like a resident evil game. It feels like a warzone shooter)

Super Mario Sunshine (the bar has been set so high that it was inevitable that a mario game would disappoint. Not a bad game, just not a classic)

Mortal Kombat 3(when the series 'jumped the shark'...really lazy programming...basically mortal kombat 2.5 ON EARTH!!!...)

pspfanboy6

Resident Evil 5 is horrible I'm sorry but it is. It a carbon copy of Resident Evil 4 which was a good game, but it was made towards more of a CO-OP game then actual story. Resident Evil should have died after Nemesis.

WitIsWisdom
2010 was marketed in Japan and North America as a futuristic sequel to the 1987 arcade fighting game Street Fighter, although its story was rewritten for its English localization to further strengthen the connection between the two games. So It has affiliation unfortunately but no one really ever considers there to be a first Street Fighter anyway because it was so bad. Street Fighter 2 is considered the first by many so no one really knew Street Fighter 2010 was a spin-off of the first because not many Know or really care but yes it is a horrible game.

Hmm.. well, that's cool to find out. Street Fighter 2010 is so much different then the other Street Fighters that I really thought it was just a generic name. Ok, I give it to the person that posted Street Fighter 2010as a black sheep.

So far I would say that

1. SMB2

2. Street Fighter 2010

are the blacksheep. The others mentioned I would either need a lot of convincing or a very good explanation.

I disagree, I feel Code Veronica X, GC REmake, and RE4 were the best of the series.

There's a couple on my mind right now, both are sequels. Zelda II - The Adventure of Link, and Castlevania II - Simon's Quest. Both of these games were very similar to eachother, but underrated by most. Castlevania II is actually mostly known these days by the AVGN episode which portrays it as being an actually annoying and bad game. While indeed annoying and a little too easy for Castlevania, it's still a great game. Zelda II has been tainted by its "extreme" (as most call it) difficulty, but I found it, too, to be a very pleasant experience all in its own. It's different than the Zelda games we're used to, challenging, fun, and takes a nice portion of time to finish, as well as puzzle-solving and good reaction speed. I love both games, and I don't mind playing them more even after I've beaten them.

I fully agree on both games. But the last Dungeon in Zelda 2, really is punishingly hard. And there's a cap on your levels so you can't just grind and get more powerful.

Dark Link himself is a pain in the ass even after you push through all the insanely-difficult obsticles you overcome during the dungeon. But the ending is satisfying.
