Considering that game development costs go up and up each year, and that games are getting shorter and shorter, do you think arcades should come back?
I mean, the movie industry spends millions making a single film, but they don't make that money back selling just DVDs. The game industry spends millions making a single game, but they DO have to make all their money back selling disks. The movie industry puts the film out in theatres first and then puts out DVDs.
Would you be ok if games came out only in arcades for a couple months before being released to retail? The catch being that because some costs were made up for in the arcades, the publisher could sell the retail versions for $20-$30 like DVDs are.
Of course, for it to work, how exactly an arcade is defined may need to change since gaming itself has changed.
