Just practice a lot and you'll get resistant and gain some thumb muscle. I have a decent thumb muscle, BTW. I would like to post a picture, but I'm too lazy to do so right now.

I think the best way is to use a finger other than your thumb. The thumb isn't as fast as your other fingers. To get past the torture segments in the Metal Gear games I use my ring finger. It seems to work better.

Move your finger to the buttons instead of just your thumb and than quick move the back.

Hold the controller bottom hard, and/ or position your thumb in a vertical manner mash the button using your hand weight. Oh, and adrenalin is also needed for extra energy.:P
