Can G4 survive?

FACTS:

-G4 is the lowest watched and rated basic cable show in the U.S.

-last year, when G4 was up for renewal on DIRECTV, it was dropped by the satellite provider altogether (it's rumored that Comcast was so desperate that it offered DIRECTV the same exact buy rate that it had during the previous deal and DIRECTV laughed and still canceled); there is speculation that other premium TV service providers are also considering dropping G4 as soon as the contract expires

-G4 has only two original programming shows, AOTS and X-Play, both of which have the production values of your average run of the mill cable access show

-G4 is full of unlikeable, smartest guy in the room, self satisfied, laugh at their own jokes on screen 'talent' (especially that faux hawked, snarky, smug doosh handbag Kevin Pereira; he's the Summer's Eve of basic cable); the only people with any semblance of knowledge and talent worth keeping around are Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb

-the parent company of G4, Comcast, has been losing money and subscribers for years; it has also been desperately shopping the money bleeding G4 to any suckers, I mean, interested parties for months with no success so far

CONCLUSION:

G4 will fold in the next 3-5 years. Take it to the bank.

It might do better if they got rid of Morgan Webb.

i dont wish for people to lose their jobs, but i cant say that id mourn the loss of xplay (or aots or any of their other programming for that matter). theres no depth or speed of coverage or any semblance of good discussion. they do tons of basic coverage for games everybody knows about (does anybody really need that much halo and CoD coverage?) but even for those select few insubstantial games that they cover a lot, they dont actually say anything interesting about them.

i know the tv show is supposed to be for a more casual audience, but it seems like even they could get the same information from publishers' mass marketing. xplay might on rare occasion give a little tv time to a small game, but it will be quickly shoved away for bigger (often inferior) games. ive gotten to the point where i actively avoid the show. giving it ratings feels like im supporting something dirty.

G4 was awesome when they had shows like CinemaTech, Electric Playground, Arena, G4 Icons, and a lot of their original shows.

Now they only have AoTS and X-Play, which I love to watch and are entertaining, but unfortunately the majority of their broadcast is stupid crap like Cheaters and Cops and Campus PD, which have no place on a network for games and such.

Will crap like that on their network, who would be bothered to watch long enough to see the fun stuff? If they go under it's their own damn fault.

Also, Code Monkey's was funny.

G4 used to be good now I only watch it for Ninja Warrior.

At its current rate, it won't. However, just fire the CEO that completely destroyed it in the first place, make more shows about games, and return x-Play back to its comic roots and all would be good.

Anywho, whilst I rarely watch XPlay because of the overkill on Halo and CoD I do actually enjoy AOTS. Can someone explain to me why it is that, that show gets so much hate? Sure a couple of skits are dumb but they are no more dumb than a majority of skits on late night talk shows. They review hardware, they have a segment (the loop) dedicated to in depth discussion and regularly interview interesting celebrities on shows guys like many of us would watch. Unless you want a Kardashian on Letterman or something than I don't know what the issue is with AOTS.

So no I would not want to see them go.

Maybe. In Australia we get it both shows on Fuel TV so I'm not sure about the intricacies of G4 but I do enjoy watching AOTS which is why I don't want it to go. We still see the in show adverts for the other G4 shows but thats just the evolution of the channel. Maybe it wasn't rating even worse when it was dedicated to gaming.

Yes, I also think their E3 coverage is 'fantastic'; I especially loved in 2007 when G4 promised to show the preconferences commercial free but they ended up cutting to commercials in the middle of the Halo 3 and Mass Effect 2 trailers (with Adam Sessler heard clearly in the background pleading with the empty suits not to cut away).

I used to watch it alot, when Sessler, Webb and that chick Kristin Holt were on. Then the Cheaters reruns and other crud shows took up the videogame shows timeslots, and DirecTV cancelled them.

The fact that its no longer a channel devoted to videogames (the only show devoted to games is X-Play, which I watch whenever they air new episodes) gives me little reason to care about the death of the channel.

They gave it their best, but clearly a channel devoted to videogames just isn't feasible.

Totally agree. I remember back in the Tech TV days when there's be some very informative and entertaining show like "Call For Help" and afterwards there's be some douchebag show - I actually found the advertising for those shows repulsive.

Oh well, I really haven't watched G4 in a long time. Seems like nothing but commercials. X-Play returns from a commercial break just so some guy can tell me to stay tuned, then they run more commercials.

I dont even watch X play anymore. it also seem like half the time that i DVR it, it records a repeat episode. How many new show do they put out because i record it at the same time every weekday yet half of them seem to be repeats

Anyways doesnt anybody watch Reviews On The Run? Its the only show i actually care about on G4. Victor Lucas is a great reviewer. The only problem is Scott Jones seems to hate any game that is released, with a few rare exceptions.

It might do better if they got rid of Morgan Webb.

thats my favorite part about G4's coverage of E3, sitting on my 50 inch flat screen tv watching the whole conference was so much fun

I have a special place in my heart when G4 TV was TechTV. I even liked when G4TV became G4TV and they showed some really unique shows. CinemaTech was one of my favorites. Then, came all the Cops episodes and in flux of Spike TV-type content when the format of the station was geared towards the same demographic. I suppose I can understand that they wanted to increase the scale of their reach but then it came across as G4 not knowing what it really wanted to be.

I'm more disappointed that it went down hill or, more accurately, was just losing interest. Ninja Warrior was a step in the right direction but aside from that I didn't see any new programming worth watching. I checked out shortly after realizing that and would only watch Ninja Warrior from time to time. With TV looking to go more internet-based anyway I suppose traditional special interests TV would inevitable be the first to go.

I think the channel was at it's peak right after the TechTV/G4 merger. Such a good line up of shows back then.

I rarely watch TV and if I want to get my gaming news, reviews, etc., I use the Internet. Not saying I a representative of all gamers, but when you see gaming websites and forums as popular as they are, I can't be that far off.

Munn's attractiveness is debatable (I've seen much better) but what's undeniable is that she is dumb as a box of rocks. Also, if she's ever picked up a controller in her life, then I'm the tooth fairy. I especially liked how she was doing a preview of Gears 2 and described its "first person perspective."

Also, she's a female Kevin Pereira: laughs at her own jokes, self impressed, thinks she's funnier than she is, Summer's Eve doosh handbag.

God how I hate Olivia Munn she is such a wannabe Gamer she doesn't know crap about games or comics yet she attends Comic con and acts like she knows it all. All she is to G4 is eye candy and she ain't even that hot.

Wow, the whole point of having girls on a gamer show is because lonely nerds love cute "nerdy" girls. They're eye candy.

Getting mad because they probably aren't big gamers is just weird :lol:
