It's not a lot of abuse, just wondering if my PS2 is gonna' break because I dropped it about an inch? And, yeah, I'm a bit paranoid about these things.

If it's the original it's built like a tank. I don't know about the Slim.

If it's the original it's built like a tank. I don't know about the Slim.

I had people trip over the controller cords back in '02,'03 about 15 times, bringing the console smashing down from about a foot. The only thing wrong with it now is the CD laser burned out.

I've had my PS2 since a few months after launch and I must say, it's pretty strong. I've had it drop a few times (most recent was when the shelf it was on broke and it fell about a foot or so).

Back when it released we used to make fun of it for being the weak system. Compared to todays PS3's and Xbox 360's it's pretty sturdy. The original version is pretty brittle, any major drop from standing height and it'll be toast. The slim is flawless though, never even seen a return for a broken unit.

It's not built like a tank by any means, but an inch shouldn't hurt it too much

Actually more like 1/2 to 1/4 of an inch is as far as I've dropped my PS2.

My fatty is a beast. I've accidentally yanked it about 1 foot forward and about a 14 inch fall and it's still ticking!

My big boy is tough like a NED, not only stubbornly withstanding being humped to my folks' house and back a few times (each time i went to stay there) , and being dropped off a table, oh and being whacked about a bit when i keep tripping over that flipping controller wire ;) heh..... but doing all of this while being run into the ground (my game collection speaks volumes where my PS2 and hard labour are concerned :o ) , and being made to play loads of DVDs as well.

It's pretty old, indeed, it came with the first demo disk and i got it second hand years ago :) I think i got a good deal there.

For some obscure reason, it also plays copied video DVDs (shrug) aint complaining, and all, of course ..... but it isn't chipped or anything to my knowledge (baffled)

It's only now finally beginning to have read errors with video DVDs (rented ones, and now finally brand new ones sometimes as well) but it just needs switched off and on again to sort it out, and it's still flawless for gaming purposes.

So, in conclusion, my reckoning is noooooo sweat man, the PS2 can take it I reckon (^-^)

That said..... I don't know about the slimline ones.

I'd be surprised if they're a lot more feeble than the chunky sort, though.

Ok. A system comes smashing down hard almsot 20 times, and has no problems. Yet is not built like a tank. Ok, whatever.

I think they're pretty durable, but not as durable as an NES. Growing up I had a friend who would get mad and just beat the crap out of his NES. The screen would freeze, the cart would fly out, the NES would fall down. We'd laugh, put the cart back in, turn the NES off and back on, and it would always work. I doubt any of todays consoles would withstand that abuse.

This thread reminded me of an old X-Play segment where Morgan took a sledgehammer to the PS2, XBox, and GC to see which was the toughest. They also dropped the consoles out a window. IIRC the PS2 was taken out by the fall from the window.

Anyway, I've had a fatty almost since launch. It has been abused by 2 young kids who throw controllers and systems around when they lose. It has been pulled off of its shelf due to cord issues innumerable times over the years. It also used to be my only DVD player so it got a lot of use playing movies. After all these years it still plays fine. It actually only gets the disk read error on blue back home-made dvds. (Ironically the only DVDs that I can't play that I own are Sony brand DVDs).

I've dropped the slim model a couple of times and it has also been pulled off the shelf a few times. I haven't had any problems with the slim model either.

Mine got thrown half way across the room when one of my dogs snagged the controller wire.

The thing still works fine to this day.

I did have to take the thing apart with a screw driver though - the controller port was knocked backwards into the machine. It was easy to fix though.

Oh and the disk was knackered (gta) as lazer met disk and scrathed it in the impact

Yeah, it still works. However, my old Fat PS2 took a dive from on top of my mom's dresser while I was playing DQ8. It killed my DQ8 Disc and I lost 3 hours on my game so I put my fist through my mom's wall. Sadly, My old fatty gave up the ghost a few weeks after the fall. So my Fat PS2 had a delayed death. So I guess what I'm trying to say (in my awkard style of writing) is that it still might die down the road from old injuries.

In my experience, unless something happens that knocks the lens out of place, both models are pretty darn durable. My fatty survived a couple of moves and drops, at this point it only plays cd based games in the upright position. The slimline is durable though and well, and due to its design is less likely to ruin a disk if it falls with one in it.

The slim ps2 wasn't too good with impacts. The GC however was almost invincible. You take a golf swing with a sledge hammer and it would still work more than likeryl. Thank goodness for titanium frames.
