I understand people like a good shooter, but people lets get serious the Halo series is extremely overrated. From what I have seen of Halo 3 compared to the shooters coming out for PS3 I am baffled as to how people think Halo can compete. If it wasnt for the installed fanbase from the previous Halo games (Halo 2 should have been a wakeup call), this game would be dead in the water. Thats how i feel about it so im asking XBox and PS3 fans alike to tell me why this game is so popular.

I think the first game was hyped because of the auto-healing armor. But other than that, the game wasn't any good at all.

Is this one of those sarcastic joke posts?

I thought it was serious until I saw "compared to the shooters coming out for PS3 I am baffled as to how people think Halo can compete."

One of the big reasons is that unlike with the PC, Halo is one of the few brilliant FPS games to be on a console.  So a lot of people love it because it's the best thing going over there, unlike with the PC where there is Counter Strike, Unreal, Battlefield etc. That's also doubled because Halo was a launch game for the first xbox, so it was a game that millions of people bought when they first got into the xbox.

It's different for everyone, but the big appeal to me was being able to play the game cooperatively. I know it wasn't the first game that did that, but I found the game to be really enjoyable and replayable because of that. I had a renewed interest when I went to my first year in college and discovered system link play. I understand it's overhyped, but those were the reasons that I liked the game so much.

The biggeest fallacy regarding the success of Halo is that its players are new to the FPS genre. I've played plenty of CS, like Halo better; played plenty of BF1942, BFV, 2, like Halo better. I enjoy Unreal, but Halo has a superb Campaign mode that Unreal has always lacked (since the original at least). It' just a great game with great weapons, maps, controls, style, and fun. That's all their is to it. You're obviously a SW type poster and wouldn't ever give the game a real chance, nor understand why so many people like it so much.

You want to know what is ironic... Why is it the PS3 line up...seems to be far more tight with shooters then either of the other two lol. Its kind of weird when Sonys only exculsive RPG till next may...Is by the makers of Genji. When the PS was always synamious with RPG. I think you know you are in trouble.

But I just find the irony here...Is that Sony seems to keep adding on more and more shooter like games. Lets make 2 new socoms...Warhawks....Lets get Haze Timed exculsive....Lets try to get Killzone 2 out.... How they are getting epic to specially invest into the PS3 version of Unreal...

Its kind of funny when they seem to be focusing so much on Shooters this time then anythng else. A bit off topic...just something really amusing about how this gen is playing out.

Wrong. The first game was hyped for many reasons. For example, the graphics were very impressive for its time, Bungie were already back then somewhat known and had released some really great games (even if their best games, the marathon trilogy was mac only), Halo was the first fps to really use vechicles and succeed in doing so. There were many reasons why the game was hyped and also succeeded.

I really wish all this unnecessary halo hate would die out. Yes, it's overrated. It's still a fantastic game, and IMO and in many others one of the best fps's out there, if not the best.

Well my explanation is that the two games released so far are both excellent games. They looked really good graphically for their time, have excellent gameplay, an interesting storyline, and fantastic multiplayer.

I enjoy Halo as much as the next guy (Own both and own a PC so bare with me) but I find that Halo 2 killed it off for me. I waited at my local game store to pick it up on release, got home and start playing. Problem I found was that the campaign felt unfinished and that the game was riddled with bugs. As for the multiplayer that people always seemed to enjoy, I ended up hating because I wanted the old days back with the 16 player halo LAN parties.....plus, the 13 year old idiots annoyed me away from XBL.

People that are childish and can't take different opinions are annoying.

Anyway... I don't see anything special about Halo. It excites me as much as Call of Duty 4 or Battlefield 4000 or whatever does.

I do think the shield system is clever though.

Having people explain why they like Halo is about as easy to understand as why you like Vincent Valentine enough to throw him up as your avatar.

a bioengineered vampire with no past and a crappy game under his belt doesn't do much for other people just like Halo doesn't do much for you

It is very simply put ridiculously fun. We don't hype the games because of features like 4 square km levels, or a battle armor that can be endlessly costumized or something, it's just that halo got it right. The mechanics just work perfectly. Well, the mechanics of halo 2 were a little less than perfect, but from the comments on the beta I hear that halo 3 plays better than both predecessors, and that's saying something. This is also why halo games get 10's in gameplay.

One other thing that's great about halo is the online. Not only has it very fun gameplay, bungie is the only developer I know who's seriously trying to make a perfect online setup. Let's just say I'd have played gears online 2x or 3x as long if it had the online setup like halo 2.

As an extra, I think the halo story is kinda cool, the music is awesome and graphics are usually also great.

We've had more than enough threads about this. Going by how the original post was worded and by a lot of responses it got, this thread is nothing but trouble. Take five, people.
