Imean, when I look at screenshots of some RPGs I see these arrows on the screen or on the floor of where the character is standing. What do they mean? And how do they differ from other action/adventure games? Other info would be nice. Just be as brief as possible...

you've played zelda right, well most RPGs move through the overworld in a similer way to either traditional ones or phantom hourglass. however instead of battleing with mashing the sword button. to fight an enemy you usualy are sent to a battle screen and take part in turn based or real time battles depending on the game. at the crux of them are usualy story, leveling up and just general puzzle, stratagy and gameplay

A Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) is a shoulder-launched, man portable weapon which is used to fire a warhead over long distances. The RPG's warhead varies, with High Explosive (HE) being most common for use against personnel and bunkers, High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) used against armored vehicles, and a variety of rarer speciality types available as well. The most common rocket propelled grenade launcher is the RPG-7, a Russian design that dates from the Second World War, and consists of a reusable launcher and the rocket propelled grenades themselves. This design is still used by low technology armies and insurgents on battlefields and warzones today.

Let me give this a shot. An RPG is a genre that focuses on character development/customization and having more than one character to control at a time (known as "parties"). Character development is probably one of the major things that separate RPGs from other genres, because the player's characters get more powerful over time. RPGs are slow-paced compared to other genres; there's less emphasis on action, although that has somewhat changed recently. Some of the characteristics of RPGs is that most stats are visably represented by numbers, rather than hidden away in other genres.

an RPG is a game where the focus is on a story. You usually go through the story by taking the role of predefined characters. You go through hordes of monsters and gradually get stronger until you meet up with the guy who is causing everything bad to happen and then kick his ass. (hopefully, heh)

D&D.

That is as short/brief as it is possible to explain what a role-playing game is.

Shadowbman

That made me smile :D As for what an RPG is, I have no idea. When games are talked about as having RPG "elements" it usually means you can upgrade or customise your character in some way.

An RPG is, usually, a game whose main focus is the story.

Development and costumization of your characters are also a big part of RPGs.

What you're asking for is a very shallow, incomplete description of genre. If you're curious, I suggest you play one for yourself.

An RPG is a game were you play as a character you create in a world of fiction fantasy sci fi etc. You play through a story line of that character and with more rpgs coming out these days. Are using what I call the choice system. Allowing some replay value to the rpg games. Bout as basic as I can get with it.
