I sure as hell cannot.

I never played Chrono Trigger to its full extent, b/c it looked so bad on my DS.
I couldnt get into it, b/c it didnt look good.

If a game has a certain god look or unique feelt o it, i can get into it if the gameplay is as good as it looks.

but for Chrono Trigger, ppl say it plays well, but the graphics ruin the feel for me.

You?

I used to be like that but iv learned to love games like chrono trigger and other games, graphics aren't the most important part of playing a game in my opinion. You just gotta try and look past some graphics otherwise you miss out on some amazing games.

Anybody that can't play games because it doesn't look good enough, is seriously hindering themselves as a gamer. Now excuse me while I go play some Dwarf Fortress.

Kids complain about older games graphics. But yet they play on consoles, which look like crap compared to what PCs can do. Oh the irony.

It depends on how bad we're talking here. Super Nintendo level and up = good to go. Nintendo and below (Atari and whatnot) = the game has to be something really special for me to look past it. Pretty much just Castlevania and Mario as far as that goes.

I play older games pretty regularly, so yeah, I can deal with some outdated visuals. Not like they affect gameplay at all.

When I played quake 2 back when it was the best FPS available my computer could only run it using software mode. Software mode had no special lightning, no blending of textures it was all pixelated. I didn't care in part because I didn't know better. It wasn't until i got a better video card that my friend told me how to change my settings and it blew me away. The only thing was that I found my skill seemed to suffer with fancy lighting.

i can easily overlook outdated graphics for the sake of good game design (a lot of early 3D games are examples) because good game design doesnt age. however, there are also games i would have played at their time of release for the sake of spectacle but have since aged poorly and i have difficulty playing. FF9 is a good example. if i played that game in 2000, id probably have powered through it for the sake of seeing the next set piece if nothing else. however, i tried it last year and just wasnt motivated to finish it because the game design alone wasnt good enough.

I call that having standards.

The fact is there are alot of awsome games out there, and just because the game was really good back then doesn't mean that will still drive you the same way as it did because graphics do matter, if they are horrible the experience is heavily damaged... at least in my opinion.

Some games i just can't but it's odd you are mentioning a ds game, small screens tend to cover that easily.

People complain about the graphics for "NieR" and yet I've felt more attached its characters and world than most "pretty" games.

Graphics matter to me, but not all that much, if I can see stuff, I'd call that good graphics, if everything is super realistic, I call it great graphics, but if everything is so blurry I can't see a thing, it's terrible to me, I can't see enough to know what I'm doing, thus, I can't play it

When you grow up with an Atari and a Nes, you learn to love the game, not the graphics. Just look at games that are insanely popular, and don't have cutting edge graphics.

Most of the time the graphics don't bother me.

However, there are a few older titles that did not age well at all.

For some reason, I could play a game as old as Secret of Mana, and then switch to something like Valkyria Chronicles and I'm in heaven.. but when I try to replay Deus Ex, I get a bit squirmish lol. But I'm glad I played it around the time it came out. One of the best PC games I've ever played. It just depends I guess.

To me, graphics are only terrible if they actually make the game more difficult to play (like the 10 frame/sec rate in early 3D sports games). I have nothing against low-resolution 2D whatsoever.

I can handle most 3d graphic, I find it rather cozy with game graphics such as OoT, FF8-9, Legend of Dragoon etc... Then we have Xenogears, which is borderline. Then we have those 2d games such as Chrono Trigger and FF6 and down which I can't stand. I try to enjoy them but they're just so lifeless, there just is no atmosphere at all in old 2d games.

I bought a new TV just for Chrono Trigger back in 1996. I still think the game looks great. Differing opinions I guess. Looks good to me! Only thing I can't stand usually are jaggies and bad frame rate drops. That's about it.

But you said that Chrono Trigger has bad graphics which was on the SNES not the NES:P and the graphics were slighty improved on the DS.

I don't care much about graphics myself, I care more about gameplay then story (depending on the game), a game can look like crap but still be great.

I find its mostly teenagers that care more about graphics but that might be because they have grown up with better graphics and less quality gameplay in a lot of games, but that's just my opinion.

Depends on what you mean by 'terrible' graphics. Terrible graphics for today's games, or simply old games 'cause that's the best they could achieve?

For me, I'm a big retro gamer, so yeah, I play loads of games that kids wouldn't even look at simply because they look 'blocky'. As for Chrono trigger, I feel that 16-bit graphics actually hold up well to today's standards, since 2D can never really look ugly unless you had some really messed up character and map designs.

Yes, given the game is good. I think too many people (this has been an ongoing problem since video games were created) place to high a premium on how a game looks. In fact, many great looking games today are horrible when it comes to how fun they are. Likewise, there are some older games that suck too, but if graphics are limiting your ability to enjoy classics like Chrono Trigger, you are missing out big time. There is such a wealth of amazing games that by todays standards have horrible graphics, but ofr their time they were beautiful looking games. I would try to keep more of an open ming when playing older games because you'll have a lot more great titles open up to you if you do.

To me, its just about bumping up the resolution and sharpness....The graphics don't have to be good. For example; I think Halo: Reach is meh graphics. If it was possible for me to bump up the resolution to something like 1920 x 1080, increase the sharpness, and add some nice AA and AF, it will look just fine to me. Same thing goes with any other 3D game. 1993+

The very notion of its painstakingly-crafted sprites being anything short of godlike, timeless, and/or viewtiful

That implies that you either A) Support half-made games or B) Play lots of text-based RPGs. Because the purpose of playing a game to explore the world that you're given, not for you to fill in the gaps, unless the game was made with that intention.

The problem with a lot of gamers is that they see gameplay and graphics as two separate elements when in reality they're qualities that should compliment each other. Typically games with really horrible graphics reflect sub-par gameplay as well. The only period in gaming where your statement is true to an extent is exactly as you stated, the late 70s to the mid 80s.

Terrible graphics are one thing, dated graphics are another. The way I see it, video games should be considered an art form. Do you appreciate modern art more than the Mona Lisa because the Mona Lisa is old? Probably not.

You can't compare graphics from previous generations to the recent one. It's not fair. Just because Final Fantasy X doesn't look as good as Final Fantasy XIII shouldn't mean XIII is the better game (I'm not a fan of FFX but it is still better than any of the newer games in the series).

And when I think of 'terrible graphics', Super Mario Bros. doesn't come to mind. When I think of terrible graphics I think Thor. It's a current gen game that probably looks as bad as it plays. Chrono Triggers graphics are far better than Thor's, even though Chrono Trigger used sprites and Thor uses polygons. Heck, I'd rather see the sprites in FFVI than see the awkward, hoofed polygons in FFVII.

Give your head a shake TC.
