After tantalizing fans with the possibility of a new Megaman title in the works at PAX East earlier this month, Capcom has officially announced plans to release Megaman X9 to PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade and Nintendo Virtual Console this fall."We recognize that fans have long awaited the return of their beloved Megaman" a source inside Capcom tells us. "After seeing the success of Megaman 9 and 10 and the overwhelmingly positive response to the return of the 8 bit roots, we believe releasing X9 in the same vein will please fans both new and old."
That's right, Megaman X will make his triumphant return to gaming in all of his 16 bit glory. Â But that's not all, our anonymous source tells us.
"We recognize that simply putting X back in his original [16 bit] environment isn't enough. Â We will also have the voice actors that made an appearance in Megaman X4 as well as Megaman 8 return for their roles in this upcoming title. Â We feel that they appropriately put much needed emotion and drama into the compelling narrative that those games had, and would be honored for them to come back for an encore appearance."
The title is set to bridge the gap between what happened at the conclusion of Megaman X6 and the beginning of Megaman Zero series. Â Presumably, the game's story will tell the tale of how the Elf Wars began and see it through to its conclusion, to give the main Megaman X storyline a fitting and officially canon conclusion.
"This will be the most narrative driven Megaman X game yet. Â The game will function much more like an interactive movie rather than a classic Megaman X game, with QTE's and character interaction being the main portion of the gameplay. Â We understand here at Capcom that actual gameplay is not as enticing as it once was, but fans can purchase additional gameplay options via DLC available on release."
The story of Megaman X9 comes at a price, however.
"Because Megaman is no longer important here at Capcom, and because we quite frankly don't give a damn about him or his fans anymore, only the introduction level will be available upon release, with each subsequent stage coming as additional DLC episodic content to be released in the weeks following the game. Â Or for fans impatient to see the story to its conclusion, can purchase a spark notes version of the ending Day 1 for a small sum of 19.99."
"We're excited to see Megaman make a return to mainstream gaming, and excited to reap the profits from all the desperate fans who will purchase this DLC. We here at Capcom maintain the standard of only excellence not only in our games, but in our business model as well." NeoGaf
I for one say it's about damn time Capcom wisened up and listened to the fans for once. Â Day 1.
