I agree Capcom acts more like grinning lackeys to Western Devs this gen when they should be taking charge of Eastern gaming values. They're Tonto to The Lone Ranger. "yes kimosabe, I want to be like you"

Well according to those in the East, they are trying to appeal to the play style of Western gamers, I guess in a interview it went something like this "Western gamers like to be in the action, so thats why we ditched the turn based action for a more fluid action-y game." (coming from a guy that is developing that new gun based RPG, name escapes me) I just sat there and said, "WTF!!!!!111!!111one" to say the least what a **** do most of you want that? MOAR ACTION FOR THE HOLLYWOOD SCENE? I sure the hell don't so why are they getting these ideas?

I like my turned based action, because if they switch to what western gamers want, guess what? We won't have anything thats different, everything will be one big MUSH of action games. F that. RE5 sucked, RE4 was done right, but sorry Capcom, time to go to your gaming roots.

It would also bring a tear to mine as well. A new Onimusha is what Capcom needs. They need to stop putting it off so they can publish and fund these games which keep failing (Bionic Commando and Dark Void).

As for catering to Western Gamers, it seems like that's the direction this industry is going, sadly. I for one like some manner of variety in my gaming collection. For the games all to play the same (and they're from different series and so forth) is just not going to cut it.

I hadn't seen radioactive mist since Superman 64. I've got no problem with linear games (Uncharted 2 was my GOTY pick last year) but a game with hard to see but lethal 'walls' just isn't something I can enjoy.

I was about to throw my hands up and agree while pining for the days when Resident Evil wasn't a lame action game and actually tried to be a survival horror like it was intended.

Then I remembered I gave up caring within the first hour of playing Resident Evil 5. I don't know what Capcom were thinking but maybe if they do something really amazing in the future I'll start paying attention to them again.

I couldn't disagree with you more. Lost Planet was fantastic as was Dead Rising and RE5. So far of all Japanese devs Capcom have done the best imo, they are making games that western gamers are interested in but are still also distinctly Japananese. I would like to see a new Onimusha, though there is a Devil Kings 3 coming that may interest you. Dark Void arrived today so i shall see what i think of that, the demo was alright, controls were awkward though. That was made by a western dev however, just published by Capcom, i fail to see how you could want that "more Japanese". Or should they only publish Japanese games to suit you? :P

From sales. Sales are the barometer of what the public wants. FPS and action games sell the best overall, and thus the companies take that to mean that people want those games. It's not a completely wrong system, it just doesn't adequetly represent all of the gaming interests. And you can't blame the companies completely. Games are extremely expensive to make, and companies can't afford to make a poorly-selling game.

The ripples in the pond of a hard-to-read Japanese market emanate forth into all aspects of the industry. I personally haven't had a problem with what Capcom has put out this generation, but there's no denying it's been awful shootery. Again, though, Japan went stupid and isn't interested in conventional games like they used to be, so it makes logical sense to look to the west when the option is making non-games that get outsold 300:1 by the next Wii Fit, and the west LOVES shooters.

Dark Void was developed by Airtight Games, not Capcom. Capcom's offerings this generation have been alright at best, in my opinion (then again, I was never much of a fan). Lost Planet was ok (I'm definitely not interested in the sequel), Dead Rising was boring and pointless and Resident Evil 5 was a disappointment. Not interested in Devil May Cry and Street Fighter.

I wouldn't mind seeing a new Onimusha game.

Did you even play RE5?dvader654

Do we have to go through this every time? Perhaps other people don't share my ability, but I am more than capable of drawing important conclusions from a demo. I don't need to play the game in its entirety to figure out that it's not up to snuff. Was Resident Evil 5 not a very safe sequel that liberally borrowed set-pieces from its predecessor? Is the inventory system completely revamped in the full game? Are the mechanics and the AI totally different than in the demo? I'm not about to write a review or even rate the game based on a demo, but some basic observations do not change going from a demo to a full game.

I agree that RE5 was a BIG disappointment. RE4 was just so outstanding and I along with most people really wanted RE5 to be great, but after all the wait it was just meh. Sheva got in the way all the time and was mostly annoying. The game was so short and one of the levels was on rails. It was really my last hope for Capcom.

Once you get into later portions of the game that design restriction really lets up quite a bit. I agree it was a misstep but once I got through it what remained was something pretty special.

Yeah, the combined installed base of the X360 and the PS3 in Japan is only 5 million, so its no surprise makers of big budget games are developing games with an eye towards the Western market.

Yeah, I noticed you were a zombie buff. :P

I killed a zombie with a golf club. Then I killed a zombie with a baseball bat. *quit demo*

Not a zombie fan at all. In fact, I've developed an aversion towards zombie games over the years. This is just my own conspiracy theory, but I'll be damned if developers aren't churning out these zombie games as a convenient excuse to avoid developing competent AI. "Hey, our game's AI is pretty stupid...I know, slap on some zombie skins!". Any zombie game has to fight an uphill battle to win me over (I really liked Crackdown, but I'm giving the sequel the cold shoulder). I love games like Resident Evil 4, Left 4 Dead and Plants vs. Zombies despite them being zombie games, not thanks to it.

I know I don't share your ability. I have played several demos and have decided not to get the game. One of them, Van Helsing, I ended up getting for my birthday and figured I would give it a shot. I really enjoyed the game, and had I just thought of the demo, I never would have played it. Another, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, I didn't like the demo one bit, but I found the game for $5, and it's decent. Not the greatest, but there's some fun to it. Personally, I don't even bother with demos. I don't think they adequately indicate the overall experience. However, it could just be my lack of prowess...

I just know that I've never been steered wrong by a demo. If I totally loved a demo (Crysis, King's Bounty: The Legend), I loved the game. I played the Lost Planet demo and I found it to be pretty good. I decided to skip it, but a couple of years later I picked it up when I saw it going for really cheap. Finished the game and I thought it was pretty good (gave it a 7.5). When I played the BioShock demo I was a bit disappointed even though I enjoyed it a lot because it just didn't feel as remarkable as I expected it to be. My opinion did not change much once I finished the game - great, but disappointing. Generally, I simply find that I can examine a game really fast. For some reason the Crackdown demo isn't available in my region, but I picked the game up anyway. It literally took me about 5 minutes fiddling around with the controls to realize that I made the right choice. I distinctly remember when I fired up that game for the first time, I didn't even exit the Agency building when I thought to myself "Yeah, this is gonna be a great game".

Obviously, this doesn't apply to strategy games for which a couple of hours at least is absolutely necessary, but that's why strategy games usually offer extensive demos.

I think it simply boils down to some people being able to recognize if they're gonna enjoy something relatively fast while others need more time. However, I also think that if you play (or watch, or listen to) something long enough, you're probably going to find some redeeming qualities in it and even enjoy it on some level even if you disliked it at first.

The original Devil May Cry is amazing, if you can pick it up somewhere cheap I'd recommend it. Avoid the 2nd one (its really quite bad) the 3rd is kinda in between.

I think you should give up on Capcom. Their best talent - the guys responsible for RE1, RE4, DMC1, God Hand, Okami, etc. quit the company and joined Platinum Games. All Capcom cares about now is appealing to the Gears of War crowds.

So wait, the point of the thread is that adventure/action games are OK as long as they have eastern characters?:? As an aside, how did such obvious flamebait make it to a four page thread?

I wasn't making flamebait.. I just felt Capcom made far better games last generation. And the words I have seen from them often is "games for western gamers".
