I grew up not really playing pokemon, as the only gaming console i ever had until last year with my xbox 360 was my PC. Having missed out, I want to try pokemon.

Starting from scratch, if I want to play pokemon, what is the best way to do it? Should I buy a DS and buy one of the newest games? Should I buy a gameboy advanced and play oine of the older games? What's the cheapest way to play one of the best pokemon games.

While I haven't played Pokemon since I was in Jr. High, I'm 22 now, I think your best bet would be to get a Gameboy Advance. That way you can play the Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and Gameboy Advance Pokemon games. My personal favorite was Pokemon Gold but any from the systems I listed, especially the first two, are great games in their own right.

It depends. If you want the most updated graphics and gameplay, DS is the way to go. (Plus you can play the Gold and Silver remakes, which are updatse on the games that are arguably the best in series.) Also, consider that the 3ds will have a Gameboy VC, so Pokemon will likley be on there. Ultimatley, I'd say DS, because you can play the newest one, and the GBA ones. (Which were also great.) I don't know if it's cheapest though.

Edit: it's difficult to go wrong with any games in the series, really. Do some research and decide which is the best for you.

On Amazon.ca, most of them are like $30 used. Then the new ones are the same price brand new. And pokemon doesn't change much from game to game, they just update it. So I guess Black and white are the way to go, unless there are places near you with different prices.

Pokemon games don't go down in price. Cheapest way would probably be to pick up a early model DS or GBA and you can pick up Pokemon Gold or Sapphire for under $15. I would get a DS Lite if I was you and then you could get the new ones and the old ones.

One thing to make sure of when buying the older pokemon games is that the battery still works. In Gold/Silver the in-game clock would eat up the battery so many copies are now useless because you can't save the game. The battery can be replaced if you're willing to put in the effort. I think crystal was much improved in this regard. If you can find a GBA/GBC for cheap then this might be the best way to go. If you don't mind any of the newer games then a DS could be better as that opens you up to many more games

Buy a 3DS and that way you can play all the DS versions and, the virtual console on the 3DS will have gameboy games. So you'll be able to download those onto your 3DS.

So trust me, wait for the 3DS.

Yeah, that's probably a good idea. They haven't confirmed yet though if the Pokemon GBC games will be on the VC yet though, I don't think, but it is highly likely. But you will definitly have access to the DS PKMN games with this.

You guys have to remember that the whole point of this thread is the TC asking for the cheapest way he can play the Pokemon games. Buying a 3DS at $250 is not it and neither is buying a DS when a Gameboy Advance can play 3 generations of Pokemon games for around $30.

Super Nintendo: $30

Super Game Boy Cartridge: $5

Assorted Gameboy Pokemon Cartridges: Appox $3-6 dollars.

Solution? Playing Pokemon on your TV, instead of a little gameboy, for a reasonable price. :)

the cheapest you can get is just buy a regular Gameboy color or something, most are only at like 10 bucks, then get one or two older pokemon cartrdiges, which flood the second hand market and are thrown at you for like 3 bucks or such. For 15 bucks, you will get a brand 'new' adventure that can last you weeks, so enjoy.

You're best and most future proof bet would have to be to buy an iteration of the DS (i.e. original DS or a DSlite, but not a DSi), largely do to you now having the ability to play all of the pokemon regions. Red/Blue/Yellow/Gold/Silver/Crystal all used batteries to save the games, therefore buying a gameboy would not suffice towards the future. With having a DS you can play the remakes of Red and Blue (FireRed and LeafGreen), Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, HeartGold/SoulSilver (the remakes of Gold/Silver/Crystal) and the now current Black and White versions. To sum it up, your best bet is an Original DS or a DSlite since they also have Gameboy Advance slots.

Yeah like pain said. The battery issue is going to hit you down the road. GBA remade all the classics you were saying you missed out on. DS LITE is not the cheapest but you could get a used deal. It would play the remakes of gold and silver on ds and the gba games like fire red or ruby ( my favorite ) but the absolute CHEAPEST is the way terragon said.
