One of my favourite classic active RPGs is Crystalis. The original game was made for the NES back in 1990 but I'd recommend the Gameboy Colour version if you have one.

Oblivion was one of the worsed excuses for a rpg i playe
The only thing that did not suck was sheer the size of the world

There is no character improveent as for every level the word grows stronger aswell, effectively making you "weaker" in the areas you did not train while keeping the 3 remaining stats "balanced"
There is zero, nada, absolutely zilch continuation to be found for your actions.

This leaves for a game where a fresh level 1 character is identical in strength and standing as a max level badguy of wickedness and is treated as the same wherever he goes.
This game has to be played to believe how overhyped POS it is.

The only sincere review regarding this GOTY title i could find was http://www.rpgcodex.net/content.php?id=129 and it touches only skindeep on the gamebreaking flaws, read the user coments in the forum section to get a realistic view of the worsed GOTY in a decade of gaming

(bold statements yes but its how much i despise this game)

Chrono Trigger is a great game for SNESGenie_i

I was going to recommend CT, but he said he already has Final Fantasy Chronicles.

Edit: Oh, you should totally check out Final Fantasy VI.

have it as well, final fantasy anthology, as far as i know i have all of the final fantasies aside from the ones for psp and other handhelds.

and as for system, PS1 or PS2 would be preferable, but i do have a NES, MasterSystem, and Genesis if any decent ones are availbable on them.

and i may look into getting a SNES

Super Mario RPG for the SNES is a great game if you like Mario. Chrono trigger is awesome. Lufia I and II are terrific. Any classic Final Fantasy is good.

In terms of classic rpgs, I'd suggest the following:

Shining Force 1 and 2 (separate games for the GEN)

Secret of Evermore (SNES)

Chrono Trigger (SNES)

Xenogears (PS1)

Breath of Fire Series (SNES, PS1, and PS2)

Alundra (PS1)

Lunar Silver Star Story Complete (PS1)

Grandia (PS1)

I'm pretty sure I'm missing a lot, but those are the ones that came to mind.

Since you have a Master System and Genesis, you should check out the Phantasy Star games. Or pick up the Sega Genesis Collection for PS2, which includes three PS games, and some other cool Genesis games you may have missed out on. :)

Wow, somebody else did play Crystalis after all. I always thought a sequel to it would be badass...I loved it.

Add another who played that underrated NES game. Ditto the call for a sequel. For an NES action/RPG, Crystalis was quite a long haul.

Why SNK never sought to push that title into a series of games, we'll never know.

Soul Blazer was mentioned too. Reminds me a bit of Dark Cloud I and II (PS2), albeit, you don't place the townspeople or buildings down on your own in a 'SimCity'-like editor. The game handles all that on its own when you collect parts of the towns in the game.

Alundra is on my list also now. The PS1 is rather lacking in a straight-up action/RPG type of game, and from all I've read about it, it would be right up my alley. Alundra II is much more common (due to being released by Activision), but I heard nothing but bad about that one.

Star Ocean 2 and 3 are great RPGs. Might be hard to find them now though, but you can pick up SO1(never released in NA) and SO2 on PSP soon.

Suikoden is also a very good RPG series.

Chrono Cross is great too.

The suikoden series are the best!!!
I really reccomend 2+5, absolute clssics and gameplay is so liberal (lots of paths to take)

5 has a slow start but is really great on PS2 once ur a few hours in,

SUIKODEN FOREVER!

The community here has made a very comprehensive list. The only game I can say I didn't like would be Oblivion, I just don't like the Elder Scrolls.

FFIV and DQ IV are avaliable for the DS right now. Plannining on getting them.

They have this place called the Exchange where I live. great old time games there. i saw a copy of FFVII going for $55

Methinks I'm going to spend a small fortune in that place
