Is anybody else getting tired of the stereotypical Brooding Hero?
This protagonist can be found scattered throughout almost every genre and franchise out there from Action, Platformers, FPS, RTS and even RPG's (pick any JRPG at random)
I mean, really?
Can't we have just one hero who doesn't need to have his meds refilled before he feels the need to get out of bed and save us all?
Or how about a hero who doesn't sulk after saving the world?
And of course what is the one fundamental similarity that all of these Manic-Depressive-Do-Gooders share?
That's right...Amnesia! (Again pick any JRPG)
No wonder they're Brooding! they don't even know who the hell they are anymore!
Now, I understand that the amnesia-hook affords the gamer an opportunity to learn about the characters from a clean slate POV or to keep vital plot points secret.
But this has been done far too many times!
Plus there have been great games that got around this like KOTOR Sith Lords and Mass Effect in these you didn't need to know anything about the protagonist because all was revealed through creative dialogue choices that allowed you to better construct a bond to the character and to his or her past.

So what are some other greatly overused plots and protagonists?
Heres the one I like best!

"Evil forces decimated my village and murdered my family and now I seek revenge with a zany cast of characters who bolster my enthusiasm and confidence so that I may take revenge upon those who ruined my life...
Which is kinda confusing because I have amnesia and am not really very certain if it was even MY village that was decimated."

Oh well, at least the brooding, depressed hero gets to meet great people, such as the older, perverted guy who always talks about women, and the girl with healing/curative powers.
