Look at how much more detail is in Cod 2's box art, like the people falling down the cliff and soldiers storming the beach.

its COD what do you expect? It ought to show you that MW3 is not worth buying becasue there's no work put into it besides a few updated graphics and change of location.

New, shiny graphics and more places costs money. They can't afford it.

Modern entertainment is generally moving towards a more minimalist future. It will probably rubberband eventually.

First of all, I don't think that's the boxart, also more happening isn't always better, sometimes a more simplistic artistic design can be vastly superior.

You're complaining about the quality of the box art? There are many more things to complain about the game.

Also if that gets released as the box art I will eat my own hat.

So more stuff=better box art? I disagree. Sometimes the simpler the better. I think MW2 has the best Box art.

If its anything like the MW2 preview boxart, then the cover art will basically be the same.

I mean to me it just looks like a war game with Cod 2's and modern warfare 3's looks like a U.s Army propaganda poster.

though I think their both more fitting for their game. The main thing for cod 2 was the epic campaign. So that cover showed that. With mw games it might be better to just have a mysterious dude with a gun.

Any COD title could just have a picture of a bunny on the box, and still millions will flock to buy it.

Kinda sure like the place holder art for Batman: Arkham City, Personally I liked the place holder art better. But that's not what this thread is about.

Personally I like the MW3 art better, I like it's simplicity but I do hope it get's better, If it doesn'tthen it's no big deal. But when it really comes down to it, how much time are you going to spend admiring the box art vs playing the game. I just hope that when they change the box art, they don't copy Crysis 2 (if you eliminate the cover character and a few minor details you could easily make it MW3.

that hasn'tbeen announced as the final box art. But I think they are doing it to keep the Modern Warfare portion of the Call of Duty franchise similar. Call of Duty 4 had one person as the focal point on the box. Modern Warfare 2 had one person as the focal point on the box. While Modern Warfare 3's boxart isn't announced as official yet, I bet it will feature one person as the focal point again.

Wow. I commend Activision for this one. Finally a game company who takes less time worrying about nonsense like box art and game manuals and more time on actual gameplay and graphics. Thats why COD is console game king and always will be. If you don't like COD you pretty much have no friends.AL_GREEN
Or we have friends with better taste. The manual falls into the publisher's hands, and I think the designers/artists do the boxart. However games like battlefield bad company 2 looks better and has better box art.

Battlefield 2's box art was similar with the lone soldier standing in the front. If anything, COD mimicked the image on its COD 4 box art 2 years later.

Okay, fine. But you have to admit, the boxart for MW3, even if not finalized, is pretty underwhelming.

I think most military shooters box arts are atrocious: CoD4, WaW, MW2, Black Ops, Battlefield 2, Battlefield 3, Bad Company 2, MoH, Operation Flashpoint DR/Red River. The only one I liked was Bad Company 1, with the smiley hand grenade.

That said: who gives a damn?

Doesn't really give me any sort of message. Just a guy with a gun standing in front of a white screen. Bad Company gave you the message that there was going to be some fun times.

Yeah, that's the idea. To be fair, cover art is meant to attract attention and at this point CoD anbd Battlefield fans would buy their series even if the game came with a blank cover with the title written on it with a marker, so it's no surprise publishers don't spend much effort on covers

Attention brings in new fans, which is why good reception and excellent marketing tend to make the big money. I'm pretty sure being lofty on the cover art isn't a good idea. A blank cover with marker looks like a used game that no one bought. Of course, I'm sure you're exaggerating the simplicity of what fans will buy.

Of course it was an exaggeration. The idea is activision knows they don't actually need to lure new customers in: MW3 will sell 20+ million copies basically to returning fans alone. They don't need an eye-catching cover. Call of Duty is not a game you happen to see at the store and pick up, it's a game you specifically go out to buy. At some point I was convinced they would have gone with a black cover with the green MW3 logo. If you think about it, the cover concept applies to the title as well: they write "MW3" on the ads instead of "Modern Warfare 3" because they are confident the game is perfectly recognizable even like that. People know what 'MW' stands for, they don't need to add anything

To be honest, I have always felt that all of the Call of Duty boxarts are pretty much always the same, heh. I don't mind either way :). Just so long as they are actually a different and decent picture, that is all that matters to me, to be honest.

No, seriously. BC2's gives you information on the characters, the multiplayer levels, etc. MW2's just describes the main menu, the HUD, which has absolutely no gameplay in it. Just a grey picture. And they both have the same amount of pages!

I prefer the minimalistic MW3 boxart over the cluttered, somewhat poorly-drawn CoD 2 box. But that's just me.

It gives you an idea that you aren't just going to be a foot soldier. Every time I see COD box art since COD 4, I think of a lone supersoldier that kills everything in his path (which is usually the case).

I love how these armchair commentators know nothing about what it takes to actually create a video game, it's not like modern art, it's not just a load of oversimplified poop that your mind can actually understand, no matter how much you want it to be so. For those of you that aren't actual programmers/game developers, at least show less hubris regarding your unheld knowledge about what a game is and isn't, at least from a technical standpoint. Current gen+ AAA titles are thoroughly play tested by people that have never played video games, casual gamers, expert gamers, gamers favoring other genres, hardcore gamers, glitchers, etc. The polish of a game, technical achievements, and how fun the game actually is are the 3 main things to consider, and the first two are directly constrained by development budget in most cases while the third can be a toss up. The issue with this is that how well a game sells and how well it is expected to sell is a major determinant for sequel budgets or current budgets and this is mostly determined by the average gamers, aka the type of people that would never post on a forum like this since most of us on the forums are the loud minority(the hardcore gamers). So you end up with games like MW 3 and Battlefield 3 that are over polished and over marketed so some of the possibly more interesting games(such as Shadowrun or games that hardcore gamers may take a liking to) don't get to see the light of day due to either appealing only to a small group or due to being too big of a risk financially.

[QUOTE="Jaysonguy"]

[QUOTE="CRS98"] Battlefield's boxarts also emphasize how you can control a large number of vehicles.the_ChEeSe_mAn2

Really?

One air vehicle and one land vehicle is a "large number" of vehicles?

It gives you an idea that you aren't just going to be a foot soldier. Every time I see COD box art since COD 4, I think of a lone supersoldier that kills everything in his path (which is usually the case).

Because a foot soldier that can drive any sort of vehicle on the battlefield, friendly OR enemy, including planes, choppers and tanks and can drive said tank AND fire the cannon at the same time is much more realistic? :/

I never said that Battlefield is more realistic. I am just saying that apparently a Modern Warfare game means that the player takes control of an unkillable superhuman soldier. To me they are anything but "Modern Warfare" games really. Apart from the setting and guns, there is nothing that is accurate about how modern warfare is. I suppose I have just become jaded with the COD premise of a hero that can regen health and kill hundreds of enemies with ease who seem to unable to just swarm him with numbers.

Why CoD? 99.9% military shooters feature enemy waves and regenerating health

MW3's boxart is better than the Black Ops box art.
